I'm so sure they are going to let you use their IP for free now that you've said you would buy it if they didn't. Open mouth, insert foot, open wallet.

Yeah, especially considering that it's Activision.

I wonder how much they would want for that - hard to say really could be a "More then its worth in case it is worth a lot some day down the road"

No way Activision would sell off that property. Even if it has little active value, it's still one of the most legendary IPs in gaming.

all that matters to activision is the "little active value" part.

Yeah. It's one of those cases where "We don't intend to do anything with this property, we just don't want anyone ELSE to do anything with this property."

Holy shit, Activision's master plan comes into focus. When they shut this project down, nobody could really figure out why they did; the best we had was "they might someday use the license for something."

Guys, that "something" is selling it to these guys. They wanted to make these guys buy the license! They're evil geniuses!
DUN DUN DUUUNNN.

You know, except for the fact they're required by law to shut down any projects they're not officially making or else it becomes public domain. Yes, I know, it's stupid. That's also why Lucas shuts down many stores that sell un-offical StarWars costumes.

This is also why many fan made projects get a C&D, required by law.

activision is going to ask for an insane amount of money for kings quest, even if they don“t care about the franchise they are not going to sell it for peanuts, i seriously doubt this guys can get the money that activision will ask for it. Maybe they could try to get an agreement like tell tales did with lucasarts for monkey island???

Maybe they could license it out for one game. If the game succeeds, Activision keeps the benefit of fame., if it fails - Activision is $15 richer.

Give it up, guys. Admit that you've wasted ten years of your lives and move on. Don't make it worse by throwing money away.

Why not just rename the game and be done with it? Every King's Quest story had different characters; it's not like they can get sued for making an adventure game where you play as a prince.

As fans of the KQ series, they felt like they were left high and dry with the last KQ. They're trying to bring the story to a conclusion, both for themselves and other fans. Just changing the names of everything is pretty much changing the entire objective of the project. It's a King's Quest game for a very important reason, even if it appears to be superficial.

Hell, they already changed the name away from KQ9 because of a previous Cease and Desist from Venvidi (sp?) a few years back (prior to Activision buying them out).

What I don't understand is why these companies have to keep such tight reins on IP that they, for all intents and purposes, have completely abandoned. I would understand maybe wanting to monitor and approve the final product, but to shut down a fan-based project?

Come on... that's basically being a big bully of a child, grabbing a toy from another kid, screaming, "MINE!!"

/sigh @ Activision

You know, if they intended to do that, they wouldn't have shut down the project, they just would have DONE THAT.

Dear indie devs,

I know that you guys cream your pants on a mere hint of nostalgia. There's nothing wrong in making an original IP. We get enough sequels as it is with the mainstream companies.

Sincerely,
Indie Game Fan

I think it would be quite the "HAHA!" (in Nelson voice from The Simpsons) for them to change the references in the game, create an original, and end up being a better game than whatever Activision is planning on doing with the IP.

Do I smell another reboot? I bet I do. Because this IP is getting to be old enough to where kids of today aren't going to know what King's Quest is. And that's where the bucks are.

I wish Ken and Roberta Williams just took the IP back action movie style. You know, kicking in doors, shooting eastern europeans, real old school

Activision: 'Woah, there is massive interest in King's Quest on the internet!'

1 year later: Activision releases King's Quest 9, a twin-stick shooter for Korean mobile phones.
