EA Mythic is making an even stronger push to try to hook trial players on Warhammer Online, allowing them to upgrade their copy of the game without requiring them to visit a tangible, brick-and-mortar retailer. Now, players who partake in the "endless" free trial can access the title's full portfolio of quests, areas, and baddies by simply subscribing to the game -- purchasing the client itself is no longer necessary.
Of course, the retail version of the game comes with a free month-long subscription, so it's not that huge a savings. Still, you now have the option of upgrading your account without interrupting your zealous Realm vs. Realm campaign.

The thing is, they don't have to beat WoW. Sure WoW is great, blah blah blah but that doesn't matter. Lets say Warhammer has exactly 1m subscribers, crap we'll even do 500k. At 15 bucks a month thats still $7,500,000 a month. Unless your expectations are extremely high, Warhammer is still successful. (I don't play either)

Except that they stated they weren't trying to kill WoW while the game was in development. Not every single MMO's motive is to destroy World of Warcraft and steal all its players.

I don't think any (or that many i suppose) companies set out to make an MMO that will "destroy WoW". The gaming public and media bestow that quest. Star Wars: The Old Republic, for example, was never touted as the WoW Killer until someone said "Hey, this could dethrone WoW". It's stupid. Not to get on too much of a tangent but, this same thing applies to phones, and computers, and whatever else.... we can't just have competition, someone has to lose. :/

The thing with WoW is, you press forward and your character instantly moves forward, you release the key and he stops dead.
I know it sounds simple but there isn't another MMO out there (and I've played most of the big ones and a fair few smaller ones) that just "feels right".
I'm much more a fan of open world pvp and bigger raids (loved daoc) but I've spent more time playing wow than any other game purely because of the extreme polish it has. It's so easy to play and once you get hooked into a good community it becomes hard to let go until that guild falls apart, at least that seems to be my cycle with me.

Quality has absolutely nothing to do with it with WoW's case.
It's what's easiest, and what people are used to.
Same with Starcraft.
Same with Diablo.
It's easier to like what everyone else likes, and what your friends are into, than actually venturing out and trying other things.
It's why something like Total Annihilation, which IMO, is VASTLY superior to Starcraft, will never, ever rise to the respect as Starcraft.

To destroy WoW you need to make a game that is not WoW. It is very hard to make someone quit the game while they are into it, it is easier to wait until they get bored with it. And if I am tired of WoW why would I go to a WoW-clone? And if I am a new gamer then why would I go to a rip-off rather than the original?
Developers should be carving out their own niche. MMOs have unlimited potential and yet we keep getting the same thing over and over. Few games that went the other route found their success: Eve Online and Guild Wars off the top of my head.

Your comment is so full of fail. Thats like saying "game companies just dont understand, they will never outsell GTA IV." So in order for a game to be successful, it has to overthrow whatever the current best seller/most popular one is?
By your logic, Wii Sports is the best game of all time, and wont be toppled for quite a while.

Aren't mmo's doing this already and if they are not... why aren't they. 120+ dollars a year in subscriptions and they still want you to go and buy a disc at 60 dollars.
In the end, good choice warhammer.

Very few do that. I know LOTRO has it to where all you need to do is purchase the expansions, and the montly fees. I believe EVE works the same too.

There isn't a single mmo out there that aspires to be a WOW killer. They aspire to be popular. In the mmo world, that's a BIG difference. If a game even has a quarter of the subscibers that WOW has, they're pretty good.

As a WoW player, I have to say I sometimes go back to my free endless trial of Warhammer just for something a bit grittier and refreshing. it really is a nice MMO. It just happened to come out on the same planet as this other game called WoW. If WoW didn't exist there would be 15 million people playing warhammer.
Try the demo. It's free and fun. What have you got to lose? I might consider subscribing to Warhammer if the monthly fee was 10 bucks instead of 15...
