I really enjoyed the original RDR, but I don't think I'll be picking this up for a while. My gaming schedule is pretty packed for....well pretty much the rest of the year

Why did ben get downvoted, because too many good games have been coming out lately?

I'm in the same boat. I just bought Just Cause 2 and it looks like it's going to be all the free-roaming nuttiness I'll need for a while. If I feel the urge to buy something else, it'll probably be something along the lines of God of War3 or MAG.

Still, this looks like it will make a good rental but I'll probably just play through it and be done.

Sounds like they need to take a page out of Ubisoft's book (pre DRM days). They do amazing things with their internal engines, overhauling them from game to game to the point where they are almost unrecognizable from one another, and the only thing telling you it's using the same engine is Prof. Wikipedia.

Completely understandable though, if its only shortcomings are the same technical problems that didn't really hamper GTAIV. You can only do so much with a game and its engine when your studio is in turmoil and your company group is tasting some bitter kerfuffle left and right for a year.

Looks -and sounds- great though. Never played the first, but I'm a total GUN fanboy . . . Don't know why I've avoided putting RDR on my radar until now, but rest assured it's on.

Also, you can't forget the immortal impact of the greatest Western game of them all: Sunset Riders.

And the first three quarters of Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath. Can't forget about that either (last quarter was fantastic, it just wasn't very 'western').

I can't wait..... this game is what I hoped GUN would've been when that first came out, not to say that was a bad game. I loved GUN to death, but other then following the storyline, there wasn't much else to do. Although blowing up horses with dynamite-arrows was pretty amusing.

If this game will let me tie my buddies with a lasso and drag them behind my horse, then it'll be GOTY for me.

Too bad its almost guaranteed to not make money. This is the sort of realism we need to encourage. Not overly gory, not devoid of any artistic color or style, but real.

A bit like the issue Call of Juarez had. Obviously, the only similarity it had to this game was the western setting, but Call of Juarez was a GORGEOUS game. It was well thought out and actually had passable multiplayer. Too bad it was only a blip on the gaming radar.

Well, GUN was a huge flop as was the original Call of Juarez. Bound in Blood and Red Dead Revolver did decently enough though, so I can see this game at least breaking a million across both platforms.

Honestly though, I think it will do better than that even. It just looks good enough, and with the proper amount of Rockstar marketing, there really isn't much reason to think it won't do well.

Mr. Khan is referring to rumors about the games production costs and taking them as facts. It's partly because he wants to further his anti HD agenda by spewing the same "none of those games make money so make Wii games instead" position he's always held.

Yeah I think it'll sell rather well actually. With a name like Rockstar, and being a game that is pretty much GTA4 set in the wild west (generally speaking). This game will blow up once it gets some acclaim. I personally can't wait for this, I'll be getting it day one, as a personal nod to such a great game developer.

What the hell are you talking about? While this game most likely won't be as successful as GTAIV or CODMW2 it will still sell well and be profitable. Do you not see all the comments from fellow gamers that are excited about this game and have been for the last year?

If you went to the future and got this game, would it still work on your console if you brought it back? The Console/hardware won't have changed, so technically it should still play, but it won't have been made yet/then.

Hmmmm....

Of course it would play. If the game plays on an Xbox 360 when it comes out in 2 months, it'll play on an Xbox 360 now. The real question is, would MS ban his console for playing it 2 months early?

OK then, say you got a game that hadn't even been designed yet. What if you took Fallout 3 back to 2005 and played it on one of the first 360s?

I don't want a huge game world just for the sake of it. Based on the videos they put out, most of this world looks empty and they're throwing in stuff like hunting so it doesn't feel empty but I have a feeling it still will.

Plus, every game other than GTA that Rockstar has put out has been average. This might be different

I agree that there are some seriously useless open world designs out there, but this at least seems to have purpose. It's empty because, in reality, it's empty. It's perfectly suited to the theme of the game, and as such, I think it will work very well (to the tune of Morrowind/Oblivion, Burnout Paradise, and Skate - everything purposely created and blended perfectly with the setting) . . .It's not just another 'for the sake of it' type open world game, IMO.

What do you expect the Western frontier to be? Packed with people? And the towns themselves are quite populated and all the previews state the world is filled with things to do.

By the way, some of R* other games/franchises include Midnight Club, Max Payne, Manhunt, Smugglers' Run, and Bully which have received more than average critical acclaim. Even The Italian Job by R* on the PS1 was well received.

Being educated before you make statements ftw

The open world has a lot of potential.

Imagine riding aimlessly through the desert flatlands, a mile or two from any town, when seemingly out of nowhere you are ambushed by a posse. There's literally nowhere to hide. You could try and outrun them at least until you can find some decent cover in the hills or trees, but there's no guarantee you'll last more than a minute with your back to them. It's fight or die. Having that kind of scenario thrown in my face is what I'm looking forward to...!

This is my most anticipated game for this yr! I too love spaghetti westerns and have yearned to play such a game, but was never interested in previous cowboy games. Just one question Kevin Kelly, how did you NOT mention "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly"?? Best. western. ever!!!

I thought those had been established as facts? And its certainly part of no agenda of mine, but a simple tragedy. When this game appears as a massive red mark on Rockstar's next annual statement, the rest of the industry isn't going to ask the hard questions (they never do) and just proclaim "okay, nobody ever make anything like this ever again"

It's a short-sighted mentality that will kill any more from coming of this game, which is tragic. Equally it would be an issue of Rockstar's incompetent management, and not of HD development costs. No game should have to sell 5 million to break even, that's just anomalous

Do you have an example?
I think this will make a lot more money than you think, primarily because of all the advertising they've done. Everyone I know (yeah, they're all serious gamers but gamers none the less) are excited for this and are definitely going to buy it. This game isn't trying anything new either, so if it does fail open world and realistic games will still come up. GTA IV had a realistic art style, so according to what you said earlier it should have failed. Last time I checked I don't think it did.

I was just being a little frisky in my reply but that information had never been confirmed. That was all rumor and speculation by people who had their own motivations. We don't know if the game will make money or not but with a potential DLC pipeline in addition to a big launch it's more than likely the game will do 1.5 - 2 MIL in base sales by the end of the year. More than that with used sales which opens up more revenue streams with post launch DLC.

That's what I'm hoping, but you never know with 3rd party games. Especially with those rumors that they'd been having trouble with RDR being a disaster up until recently. Midnight Club was done on the same engine and was great on PS3, but they are totally different kinds of games.
