They make games that are technically sound and well received both critically and by the people that buy them.

Is that not the answer you were looking for?

Battletoads is the only classic Rare game I would be interested in. They should make a HD version for XBLA at least!

No, if they're going to make an updated Battletoads, they're going to have to release it as a physical disc to retail outlets so finally when the /b/tards call Gamestop for Battletoads the poor guy behind the counter will be able to say, "Xbox or PS3?"

I would be happy with just an XBLA arcade-perfect port of the original KI. I had a lot of fun with the SNES version but I always wanted the complete arcade game at home.

I think they are only saying that because they cannot achieve the status they had during the N64 days with said franchises, so they may be trying to avoid embarrassing themselves.

Did they just imply that they do not need to go back to Killer Instinct?

Their games now are better than the N64 stuff. Even PDZ, a bad game, is better as a shooter than the original Perfect Dark is today. All their other games are also great, as anyone who played them will tell you. The only really bad one was PDZ and that suffered because

A. Launch game
B. It was 8 months from completion when Microsoft made them make it an Xbox 360 game instead of an Xbox game

Are we talking about the same studio? The moment they got away from the classics, they made Kameo. They also made Viva Pinata, and objective quality of the title aside, as an indepth resource management sim targeted at 4 year olds, it's hard to argue that wasn't a misstep. It had no target demographic.

PLEASE Rare, for the love of all that's holy, revisit something people care about like Battletoads or Killer Instinct. At least on XBLA.

You really are nuts, man.

With the N64, a Rare game coming out was basically like a new Nintendo game coming out. Rare games had the kind of excitement and hype that Mario and Zelda had. People anticipated each new release like crazy. They were pumping out original, amazing stuff with such a high level of polish. It was hit after hit with them and the N64. Now, when Rare announces a game, unless it's one of their classics, few people seem to care. You really think PDZ is better? Like, really really?

Jesse, i think he was being sarcastic. There isnt any possible way he was being serious. I vividly remmeber going to the newsagent every month, picking up N64 Gamer, being greeted with some news about a Rare game coming out.

For me tho. Iguana Entertainment was the same. They did the original 3 Turok games, all 3 of which for me were superb. Turok 2 is a favourite of mine. They also did 2 of my favourite games of all time. Forsaken 64 and Shadowman 64.

I'll say it:

I didn't like Perfect Dark N64 or 360.

Seriously.

All other games though, from their past, were great (I'm not saying PD wasn't great, it just wasn't my cup of tea).

This kind of crap talk from them is exactly why no one cares about them today, including Microsoft. Even they see the writing on the wall with their purchase.

Cue dozens of comments bad-mouthing Nuts and Bolts for not "doing justice to [the franchise]."

I LIKED Nuts and Bolts! I built some sick high-speed ground racers, a space rocket (that broke up into a landing pod), and tons of other awesome stuff.

As awesome as that game may be (don't know, haven't played it), you can't tell me that a new Killer Instinct, a new Battletoads or a new "any of their older franchises", done well, wouldn't be awesome?

But, then again, maybe they are right. Just port some of the old classics over like they've been doing and I'll keep my mouth shut. I'd rather have good ol' Killer Instinct than a bad new Killer Instinct.

I always love arguments like this.

If they turned Deus Ex 3 into a kart racer, I bet you'd be there going "but it's a really -good- kart racer!" not understanding why fans of the franchise are so upset.

Well, actually I've been playing Banjo-Kazooie since it came out on the Nintendo 64... but yeah, I'm pretty willing to ignore everything about a game in favor of just looking at the mechanics. I'm not going to lie; if they made a good God of War FPS, I'd be right there saying that it's amazing... assuming it actually was.

I should amend that right now by saying that there are exceptions to everything. For example, I'm very reluctant to play the PS1 Final Fantasy games because even though the gameplay should be fine, I don't want to sit through all the long, muddy-looking cutscenes and dialogue scenes. There are plenty of non-gameplay reasons I can be turned off of a game, but FOR THE MOST PART, I focus on gameplay.

"If they turned Deus Ex 3 into a kart racer"

Except it's not even remotely that extreme of a difference. It's still very much a platformer, just mostly a vehicle based platformer.

@ bm - Remember that one time, a few years ago I think, they turned that Mario fella into a Racing Kart Driver?!?!? Madness ensued, and Nintendo never recovered:

"We want our traditional Mario gosh darnit!" they cried.
"Super Mario Kart? Where's my dag nab Super Mario World 2?!?!?" they demanded.

I've heard that one before. Your argument falls flat, nobody cares if Mario undergoes drastic changes to fit into the next party or sports game or whatever, because we know for a fact that they're in no way done with the main Mario series as it is. However with almost all other franchises, you know that a butchered new installment is likely the only thing you're going to be getting in a long while, maybe forever.

Take these comments from Rare. We're not gonna see another proper Banjo platformer, or Killer Instinct 2D fighter, because someone has decided that it's not innovative enough. This is of course very frustrating if you look at certain other genres in which countless clones are puked out every day, and apparently they're OK with that. But something that we actually want, like a proper return to a few beloved franchises, or even just ONE such as Banjo, then that's apparently too much to ask, it's not "new" enough.

I think some good old memories should stay good old memories. Look how much pain Sonic went through, what if every good old franchise should do the same? Battletoads wouldn't have ended well I think.

The only thing they can do is make them available at the current consoles, just as they were 20 years ago.

Sonos, you are absolutely full of shit if you think they are better now than they were before. Every single one of their games under Nintendo was a hit. Now? Name three that are a hit, since they were bought by Nintendo. And by "hit", I mean critical sales and acclaim hit, not "I liked it."

Personally I thought Nuts and Bolts was brilliant. It was highly underrated since it didn't fit the same mold as the previous BK games. That and VP were anything but generic.

Rare worked better with Nintendo because Rare better fit Nintendo's style, yet at the same time was a better contrast. Rare games did what other Nintendo studios could not, yet Rare was like other Nintendo studios in that they were (and are) willing to make all kinds of games (very few Nintendo studios are restricted to one type of game. The only two i can think of are Game Freak and EAD 3, the Zelda group)

Rare does not function well under Microsoft's run, because Microsoft likes to pigeon-hole their developers into doing one specific kind of thing, and in Rare's case, that's been Nintendo-style games (family friendly but not kiddy to the point that it's off putting for other age groups). Microsoft's style isn't wrong necessarily, but it's a bad fit for a studio like Rare, who operates best by doing whatever the hell they want to do, and not focus on any one specific thing.

@Blight

No, there was a second one subtitled "Trouble in Paradise".

@Kahn

I think you could argue that in many cases they made clones of Nintendo games on a Nintendo system. As you more or less say say, they had their own flair, but there's no denying that BK is a Mario 64 clone. They sort of did branch out with games like VP and Nuts & Bolts. But the former was always destined to be a niche title while the latter is often derided for not sticking to the forumula people were used to. I dare say Nuts & Bolts would have enjoyed more success and a better reception on the Wii. VP would still likely be niche.
