Need proof? Check out the Everything Is Terrible video we've placed after the break and then tell us gaming today wouldn't be twice as good if it had one tenth of the 90's neon, cargo pants and "Woo!"-ing.
Gaming in the 90s was way, way better

It's an incredible time for gaming. There are dozens of top-notch titles released every year, the hobby has reached broader social acceptance than ever before and a vast array of independent developers are pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved with interactive entertainment. But compared to the 90s? It sucks.

LOL90's... I never want to go back. Gaming today is ridiculously better.
Having things like iPhones, PSPs, and DSs make being a gamer possible on the go or during life's commonly boring times like lunch breaks, lines, and plane flights.
Weed is almost legal and we have a black president. The 2000's rock IMO.

Gaming? Ridiculously better?! NOW?!
You need a reality check.
Call of Duty and Halo don't compare to Super Mario World and Donkey Kong Country.

Back then G4 didn't suck, but when I got bored of it I could always just turn to TechTv. Then later that day I'd catch the new Fresh Prince episode.

90's gaming was pretty damn cool. Best MMO ever was Ultima Online. Graphics weren't hugely popular so all attention was focused on game play mechanics rather than flashy effects. Still can't say I dislike this generation though.

Gameplay mechanics were better in the 90's than they are now? Right . . . .
Don't confuse nostalgia with good game design.

I never said the mechanics were better. I said they concentrated more on game play mechanics than graphics. Obviously this means with what they have available at the time. So before trying to be insulting, make sure you understand what I am saying.

Gameplay now still ranks above a pretty image. I can't think of a single game that looks good that doesn't have more focus on gameplay. It might not be good play to you per se, but it's still something they spent more time on developing than they did shining up the game.

Good game design. Bwhahahahahaaaa. Hardware limitations made games painfully boring back then, when compared to today. Developers have so much more power to play with.

Painfully boring? So every zelda, mario, mega man, castlevania, gradius, and tons of arcade cabinets suck? Growing up with classic games and moving into this new generation there are both pros and cons to each generation of gaming. But to sit there and say they were boring just means you didn't experience what gaming had to offer in the 90's.

Just because graphics sucked 10 years ago compared to today doesnt mean they didnt concentrate on them. Games still strived to have the best graphics possible. So many games back then sold on graphics alone, do you realize how many clones of Super Mario Bros there were? The quality control for gameplay back then was abysmal.

@Novus: I agree gameplay has improved but I don't think it's about removing hardware limitations.
For instance, I think gameplay of current DS games is often much better than on 90s home console games, even though DS isn't exactly a powerhouse (not surprising since it's over five years old) - its technical specs are pretty similar to the (1996) N64.
When the new DS brings power levels (at least taking into account the screen size) that will probably be similar to the Wii, that will allow better graphics and new game types that aren't possible on the current system, but I don't think it will really be a step change in the overall quality of gameplay itself.
I think it's about developers learning from the collective experience of hundreds of best-selling games what works better. Learning, for example, that if a game really irritates players (by making them go back a million miles when they die, and having death be frequent) that's probably a sign of bad design rather than a good challenging game. I'm sure plenty of developers knew that in the 90s and before, but this type of thing takes a while to permeate an entire industry and raise the baseline.

From the about page:
"Here's what you'll be pointing your eyeballs at: video game news and commentary that's written with as much excitement, enthusiasm, insight and fun as Joystiq's bloggers can muster."
I'd say this falls into the category of 'commentary with excitement and enthusiasm'.

OU WANT NEWS DAVE? WELL, SUCK ON THIS-
'RapeLay' video game goes viral amid outrage
http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/asiapcf/03/30/japan.video.game.rape/index.html?hpt=C2
Maradona bitten on face by his own dog
http://www.cnn.com/2010/SPORT/football/03/30/football.maradona.dog.bite/index.html?hpt=T2
Quake strikes in Indian Ocean; no tsunami threat
http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2010/03/30/earthquake-strikes-in-indian-ocean/?hpt=T2
And. in other news, Joystiq is not a news site, if you want gaming related news so darn fresh that you get a confusion boner, then go to all the sites. No site can report all the gaming news as it is infeasible, and Joystiq sometimes takes a while regardless, as they produce more opinion.
And finally, you suck.
