@ ShadowflareXIII

It is REALLY hard to tell who did what with TR. Richard claims that the letter of him leaving was made up by NCSoft, and that he was already being pushed out of there anyway (since NCSoft wanted to pull the plug). Look on wikipedia.

That said, I don't know what Garriot is like IRL nor would I judge him since I have no idea. I know that he did much for gaming early on, and now pretty much does nothing for it. But meh, most older developers don't do anything for it anyway... When was the last time Will Wright or Sid Meier made a good game (like the ones they used to make)? Even Shigeru is losing his touch (Wii Music anyone?), but then again, he still manages Wii Fit and what not.

At least Richard is mixing things up a bit, even if it does seem selfish, and totally wacked out.

How does this guy still have money? I figured he would have bankrupted himself years ago considering he hasn't made a good game in over a decade.

Come on guys we all know the real reason why no one owns land on the moon. It goes against the 11th commandment "Thou shalt not claim land to be thees that is not on Earth". It just makes better sense doesn't it, I mean I absolutely do not want us to experience what happen to Tabula Rasa the world ended man.

Many of the "gods of the 90's" kinda turned out that way. Or they seemed to lose their talent. Molynrux is one of the few remaining, but he's not the giant he once was.

He pretty much created the RPG (yes, I know Wizardy came along, but Ultima was on a whole different level). In fact, JRPGs are probably more influenced by the Ultima games than by anything else.

Wait, wouldn't Neil Armstrong technically have the proper right for this title then?
Richard Garriott cannot claim what's already been claimed. Buying West Virginia on eBay or something.

Except, Neil Armstrong didn't claim anything. That was expressely told, we weren't claiming anything. The plaque that was left on the moon reads "We came in peace for all mankind."

Mr. Garriott is a trip to say the least - and I'm a big fan. From Ultima 1 to 8 he defined and dominated as an industry pioneer (Ultima Online Beta tester here too - the first MMORPG, way before its time alas).

He is as eccentric as he is ingenious. I won't try to contradict the tales already shared by those here - those stories are probably true. All I know is I met the man in '87 and went to his house (Brittannia Manor in Austin) several times over the years and have been equally impressed as bemused by his quirks.

I hope he's not done in continuing to make his mark on the gaming world. Lord knows he redefined things in his heyday, buy he chose to fade as time went by. Here's to hoping he throws his hat back in the ring once more in the midst of his perpetual 'extracurricular' activities. If he doesn't - oh well. He already has made history for what he's done, even if the newer generation doesn't realize what a major player in the game he was back in the day. And for that, I don't judge. He's done a great job of writing himself into irrelevance as he focuses more on space travel, and being the owner of space junk . . .

Lord British! Those who remember miss thee.

Whatever though.

I will now helpfully point out your typo. I think that you meant for that "8" to be a "7". Yep. Fixed that.

I really do wish that EA, or whoever owns it now would do a real Ultima again. I like the idea of playing an RPG where you do something other than fight or FedEx all the time.

Probably safe to say if you put it there, you own it.
Unless the USSR sold Garriott the rover as a revokeable license to *access* the onboard software and use it to play real life Moon Patrol. In which case dude got Dee-Ell-Seed and should've waited for the retail box.

>One cannot sell what one does not own

International treaty forbids any state from owning property in space, but I don't see anything specifically referring to individuals owning stuff, though they probably never thought that far ahead when they drafted it:

If a state cant own anything, then an individual cant either, because individual property right are granted by states and every individual is part of a state (except those few islands in the pacific which are not states because their inhabitants simply dont care to have one cause they are just chillin' on their atols).

So, short answer, no individual can own anything in space. As for the rover, Garriott just enjoys whatever rights or privileges to the rover that Russia/Soviet Union had under the outer space treaties.

I think Garriott has managed to buy himself the Brooklyn Bridge on the moon!

Just thought I'd pop in, amongst the 'crazy weirdo' posts and whatnot, to assert that there are still people, such as myself, who respect Garriott for his vision and accomplishments. Props to anyone who is true to themselves even when it (apparently) doesn't win you any popularity contests.

So, he lucked out here. Were it not for the specifics of the OS Treaty, he may have had a claim. Wouldn't you have gave it a shot if it seemed you had a genuine chance to own some land on the moon? Worth a try. Hell, loads of people spend money 'purchasing' land on the moon from companies who have no claim to it themselves.

I didn't play Tabla Rasa so I have no opinion on it, but Garriott's impact and influence in the game industry is unquestionable. If you've ever enjoyed a western RPG or MMORPG you owe him at least a little gratitude.
