Dr. J vs. Larry Bird One on One was my very first computer game. I had it for the Commodore 64. I use to play it all the time against my brothers and friends, and there was nothing better than breaking the backboard via a slam over them. Of course, the foul mouthed janitor didn't think so.

They're called dashes. They're used for asides. This is common practice.
That said, that was a particularly odd one, Joystiq. The section inside the dashes is a little too long to flow nicely, but maybe I'm just nitpicking.
