Official Xbox 360 USB drives priced by GameStop

GameStop has leaked information about those official Xbox 360 USB hard drives we've heard about (first rumored and then officially), and they ain't cheap. According to the confusingly similar GameSpot (who saw the prices temporarily listed on GameStop's website), there will be both 8GB and 16GB drives available, the smaller for $39.99 and the larger for $69.99. According to Major Nelson, we'll see them in stores in May.

Of course, the system update will also allow you to use any USB drive (not just the official Xbox-branded ones), but before you get visions of 1TB of storage plugged into your Xbox, remember that there's a 16GB limit on each of two possible devices, so you can have only 32GB total. Fortunately, an unofficial 16GB flash drive is about half of Microsoft's price over on Newegg. You may have to tweak things a little bit, as the official drives are meant to be "plug and play," but it can't be that complicated. The GameStop listing is down for now, but we'll see these drives officially in just over a month or so anyway.

Yes, you can partition a hard drive. You can partition any USB mass storage device. Just that the partition can only be 16GB max.

Cool, thanks. I've got a friend that only has a 20gb, and an old external hard drive. Format a partition, and now he'll have nearly double the space.

USB flash drives have huge variations in speed depending on brand, model, etc.

And you suspect MS is using the highest quality parts to make the highest quality drive?

Doesn't that go against their history of hardware manufacturing?

Microsoft, I defend the hell out of your absurd Hard Drive prices, but this is just plain stupid.

If the read speeds are 30MB/s then these may *almost* be worth it (not that I would buy one of them). I have a $60 4GB Kingston which reads at 33MB/s and a cheapo Kingston that reads at 10MB/s. These Xbox ones better at least be in the higher range.

Haha true! Lots of ignorance here. I'm an IT guy and a while back, I was bored and downloaded a speed test utility to confirm a few numbers. Quite the difference! I'll probably use my one that has about 16MB/s and maybe pick up a faster one at a later date when there is some crazy sale.

8 Gigs for 40 bucks....... maaaan I could get a 16 Gig on newegg for 30 bucks.... If I really care that much I will grab a marker and write microsoft on it....

I REALLY REALLY would like someone from Microsoft to explain why all of their stuff (Wireless internet adapter, HD's, and now this) is so dang expensive. I know they always give some PR crap and beat around the bush, but I want a direct response. Just tell us you jacked up the price because you want to make a bunch of money off everyone even though there's cheaper options. If you gave me a straight answer, even if it makes you look like a rat, I'd be happier than without one!

I see a black Sandisk Cruzer Micro. It's just missing the transparent rubber sleeve.

i keep my saves on a memory unit now that i found outside gamestop but looks like ill be keeping them on my 64 gig drive on my keyring now.. if i see anybody buying one illl kindly direct them to the internet

You know, I bet there's a few people out there that would buy one of these to use as a normal flash drive just because it's cool to have branded merchandise with xbox written on it.

I just recently bought a 16gig flash drive pre-installed w/medal of honor for PC for $8. I do love my Xbox360 and all but geez what a rip!
