Why? I don't know the specs but I've always wanted a device exactly like that (even before they announced it). I've always wanted a tablet with just the screen, and that's what iPad is and even thinner (plus now I can load up a good VNC to remote control my laptop and desktop while in my living room, without having to scroll all over the effing screen on a tiny 3.2 inch screen).

The only bad thing I can see with it is that it's not an "open" platform (or whatever that's called), but it'll get cracked eventually.

I don't know what overcame me to think you'd understand just the word "Why" (or you might).

@Reinhart

The idea itself is good. But the things are way too expensive. You also have to pay $230 simply to upgrade any model to 3G. Having 3G means you're involved in a cellular contract. The hard drive space is too small too.

That's all true. I had planned not to buy the 3G version, because I don't want a phone that's has a surface bigger than a friggin' brick (though you can use hands-free). Also, imagine how quick a TABLET would die would 3G, keeping in mind how fast iPhone 3G dies; and TABLET has more computational power, granted it's bigger and has more space for battery.

As I understand it though there's an app on the iPad that you can use to talk on the phone now, without a contract. (so Apple's stopping their previous attempt to block apps like Google voice)

And if I remember correctly, if you want the bigger harddrive you have to upgrade to 3G as well right? (can't be bothered to check atm)

it's a crappy device because it's too expensive.

it pretends to be an e-reader when that kind of screen will likely blind you if you read it for hours on end at such a close range, e-readers have a special ink that won't destroy your eyes, this doesnt.

Have fun watching movies, yea, holding that for 3 hours wont become tiring anytime soon.

and congrats on paying 800 dollars for a 3g device that can't even make phone calls.

i hear that apple is coming out with a smaller better version though, that has a camera, and makes phone calls as well...

o wait....

There is no contract for the 3G, hence the expense of upgrading to it. (The contract would normally subsidise the device)

Also, it uses flash memory, so complaining about the price and then the hard-drive size is a bit silly because increasing flash drive size would massively increase price.

Of course, I'm not going to get one, mainly due to a lack of money. Never mind.

@Spike Spiegel

Do your research man. Upgrading to 3G is $130, not $230. Having 3G does NOT lock you into a cellular contract. You can by a month at a time and cancel whenever you want. 250MB a month is $15 and and unlimited data for the month is $30. Probably the best deal on 3G data you'll find anywhere.

@Maxwell Ash

Is that why there is a $30/month data plan coverage to use 3G? Yes it's a flash drive, we are past flash drives. They are called solid state drives. For the price of one of these you could have a nice slate, laptop, or desktop with a solid state drive. Apple is like a BMW or Lexus. You pay more for the name.

Ok, sorry, my mistake. $130 upgrade to 3G. On top of $30/month data plan. On top of an over priced, small hard drive, heavy tablet computer.

Not saying the data plan is over priced. I am simply saying this thing costs a fortune compared to other options. Flame, down vote, do whatever. I stand by my decision that this thing needs to hit a second generation before it's even worth while.

Well I for one hope apple succeeds. Think how cool it would be to have a Playstation 4 that's identical to the Playstation 3 in capabilities only it fills an entire closet. This precedent must be set, VIVA LA LARGER VERSIONS OF CURRENT GEN. ELECTRONIC DEVICES!

P.S. Nintendo is already on board, i.e. DSXL.

I don't think it's actually a solid state drive, its just regular flash memory, that's why the storage numbers are low. Real solid state drives start at around $200 alone. Data plans start at $14.99, not $30. There is no contract, meaning you can cancel anytime. I got a $499 16gb WiFi model, it's about $100 more than what I paid for an EeePC a few years ago, about the same specs, and infinitely cooler.

I originally bought a netbook for things like pictures and internet. I didn't use it for a damn other thing. I sold it. The iPad does exactly what I need it for (even will stream my Netflix movies) and wipes the floor with my netbook as far as gaming goes. I can leave it around the house in standby and it will hold a charge for at least a week. I don't have to boot up a "crappy" netbook for a few min of web surfing.

I understand if it's not for you but it's ridiculous to call it a "crappy device". :\

You'd be stupid to spend $15 on a 250 data plan vs $30 for unlimited. And I know it isn't solid state, it's flash. I am saying solid state drives are better.

You guys are entitled to your opinion and fully respect that. I am debating my half of the argument, and respect your halves of the debate. I just can't see any reason to buy one of these yet. It's too new, too expensive, and too low on tech spec rates. I think it's a crappy device because of all that. My personal opinion.

Though i find it fun to debate these sort of things so bravo on some of you being able to handle a debate without hatred.

really? people are debating whether the ipad is good or not? I thought it was common knowledge that the ipad was a POS. It's too closed to be used like a PC/Tablet, there's no pen so you cant really draw like it's a tablet, it's too big to be portable in any convenient way... If you're going to be carrying something that sized, you might as well get a laptop because with a laptop, at least you're not confined by the limited "OS" if you can even call it that.

Yea if I was going to get one it would be 3G....and that's just too fukin expensive, and indeed it's not enough space....I have 320GB and 640GBs on my PS3s, 500GBs on my laptop....over 6TBs between my 3 desktops...hell I held out on the ZuneHD because I wanted at least 64GBs....I would like for the iPad to have at LEAST 128GBs, as I would use it mostly to watch movies on the go....so with any luck the HP Slate will have a good amount of space on it....and since it will be Win7 I know it will run all my codecs...which is another turn off to the iPad for me...

RE: Data plans and prices
It does seem like a no brainer to get the $30 unlimited data, but for some it isn't all that stupid to get the $15 plan.

I'm in WiFi coverage nearly all the time everywhere I take my iPhone. I only use about 175MB of 3G data a month on my plan because of this, which means the $15 plan is perfect (plus, I'm much less likely to have my iPad on the go than my iPhone)

If you use a lot more data than this or you don't have a lot of WiFi access, the $30 is the way to go. However, I think the $15 is going to fit a LOT more people's actual usage - and they can easily change it on a month-to-month basis.

In order to put a halt to this debate about the data plan, it's not stupid to get the $15/250MB, because the device lets you know when you're about to reach your limit and you can opt to upgrade to the unlimited for the rest of the month (paying only the difference). With that feature, I'd say it'd be stupid to go with unlimited unless you know for a fact that you will top the limit every month.

Man, articles about Apple are so tiring because of the people they bring out. You guys all rail against anything Pachter says, but here you all are doing the same thing. "There's no market for this," "there's no value in it," "it'll never work," etc. It's tiring. The same thing has been said about every major innovation in the history of technology (NOTE: I am not saying that this falls under that category). The Personal Computer was a pipe dream. Cars were stupid ("If I asked the people what they wanted, they'd say a faster horse."). On a smaller scale, the PSP was never going to be able to compete with the DS, the iPhone was never going to sell, etc.

Give it a rest. Some of you guys act like you have some personal stake in seeing this fail (not you Spike, or the other level-headed debaters here).

Yeah, it always sounded like a feminine product to me....Stupid. Of all the intellect Apple have (or not have), they couldn't come up with a better name? Or aren't geeks familiar with that aspect of culture? Or they are and they thought it would be hilarious to make their company make a device with such a name.

They probably came up with this before Steve Job recovered from his death bed, and he just signed whatever document they gave him.

1st Gen PowerMac G5, iTunes 4.2 for windows and 1st Gen iPod never had problems. if any apple product they do, they are covered for a year, and three years more if you get the warranty.

the only reason the original iPhone dropped from $499 to $299 in price so quickly is that at&t saw how fast adoption rate was, and decided to subsidize the device with Apple.
