Adding more depth to the already eye-popping rumor that the Nintendo 3DS will use Sharp's parallax barrier LCD screen, Sharp today detailed its latest 3D, no-glasses-required screen for mobile devices. Engadget spotted the announcement this morning -- one that advertises the 3D touchscreen as "ideal for mobile devices such as digital cameras, mobile phones, and smartphones" -- rightly pointing out that the screen falls near-perfectly in step with Nintendo's recently revealed 3DS handheld.
The announcement also confirms that the screen can switch between 2D and 3D modes, and that the non-touchscreen iteration of it will go into production in "the first half of fiscal 2010 [beginning April 1]." Presumably we could see the touchscreen version going into full production soon afterward, and a new Nintendo handheld on retail shelves by this holiday. We've contacted Nintendo to see if Sharp will be lending its screens to the 3DS, but we wouldn't go holding our breath for an official response any time before E3.

Twee is always going to defend Ninty. I do it with Sony myself. Last years E 3 was much better but still nowhere near as good as this years should be.

Considering virtually all of their consoles have been consistently the cheapest on the market, I'm sure they are.

I give a preliminary congratulation to Nintendo for putting some form of bleeding edge tech into one of their products. This 3DS has me very excited.

I'm not a huge fan of Nintendo or their gaming strategy with the Ds & Wii. That much is obvious. But, in this case they deserve to be lauded, applauded and praised. As much as I despise their general direction this 3DS is a huge financial risk and placates my need for bleeding edge technology. Details are scant at this point. But, even if it's nothing more than a DSi with 3D it's still awesome and I'm VERY much excited to see it's applications for gaming. If it fails then so be it but at least their talking a huge chance and doing something that has me genuinely interested.
Is this a brand new system with higher (above psp) system specs or is it another DS revision? Either way I'm still excited. As people know invasion supporter of 3-D in the home and the fact this doesn't require glasses is HUGE. That's the main barrier with 3-D besides cost of entry (new tv) : having to wear glasses. Doesn't bother me personally but I can see it being a hinderance to others. If this 3DS succeeds expect it to help 3-D adoption rates and if it fails it'll hurt the momentum of 3D tech.
I'm more likely to buy a new DS with 3-D than a HDTV at this point. I think Ninty wants to keep this thing priced affordably so I don't expect high end specs and a new media format.

3DS + Horror games = Win.
If stuff is coming out in a 3D perspective, horror genre games would be awesome.

Games that would be cool in 3D:
Dead Space, Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Clock Tower, Mario (SM64 style), Metroid...
You know, let me just save myself and say that all current 3D games would look better with this kind of 3D as long as no headaches are involved. I don't count 2D games though. 2.5D? Sure. 2D? No.

Okay, the 3DS has the new tegra chip in it, right? Then imagine WIND WAKER IN 3D! It would be -really- awesome. Timeless graphics + 3D = a game for the ages.

What really sucks is that I suffer from Amblyopia ( lazy eye), so I have poor depth perception and no stereo vision. It sucks even more that everything seems to push 3D on me, and I can't even see it. :(

My wife's friend was a preemie and has a lazy eye also. She can see out of both eyes, but never at the same time. She had some kind of surgery to try and fix it, but was only partially successful. Sometimes she can see out of both eyes, sometimes just one.
She was a little freaked out the first time both eyes worked at the same time. She said that she was looking at one of those body wash poofs, and it suddenly seemed to pop out at her!

A friend of mine had his lazy eye fixed. The doctor pulls the wandering eye inward to cross them and then somehow makes it stick there. He went from lazy eye to cross--eyed, then the cross straightens out a over time. It was odd, though. I knew him for around 20 years with the lazy eye. Took a while to get used to him not being that way anymore. lol. Sounded like a fairly simple procedure, though.

I can have surgery to correct the musculature, but my brain already compensated by making the visual information from my left eye override my right.
So I might never properly get stereoscopic vision again.
I do fine without it, only time it bothers me when I need to catch a pop-fly in baseball or when I am sitting in a 3D movie and everyone is oooh-ing, and I just sit there going WTF. :(

Hey I don't even know if you'll read this but sorry for attacking you like that. I just find it uncalled for when people hate on the Vitality Sensor. I mean we don't even know who it's aimed at or how it will be used.
Also Cammie does fail so...yeah.

Only really useful stuff that it can be used for are games and the occasional 3D-based app like Google maps. You can't tell me that browsing street view in 3D wouldn't be anything short of amazing.
