Some brands just seem to go with gaming. We don't know why Mountain Dew, Cheetos and our beloved Blueberry Muffintops match so perfectly with joysticks and thumb pads, but there's no denying that they do. For whatever reason, Old Spice deodorant desperately wants to be in that club (anyone remember the Old Spice Experience Challenge or its bastardized rehash?).
Now the Bane of B.O. has returned with three Xbox Live Indie (in name only, we guess) Games designed to keep Old Spice in your brain as well as under your arms: Newton vs The Horde, The Fresh Card Game and Old Spice Racers. (Update: A spokesperson for the company requested that we clarify that these games were not, in fact, made by Old Spice but rather by members of the XNA Creators Club in conjunction with the Dream.Build.Play. competition.) We were going to try to describe each of the games, but we only got as far as "zombie Stinkies" before we were overwhelmed by a crippling wave of depression. Props to Xbox 360 Digest for being made of stronger stuff than us.

Old Spice is not the nostalgic aftershave your grandfather used to use anymore. Apparently, Old Spice is going after the Axe crowd, and is totally different from the old formula, the original Shulton formula. India, yes, out of all places, India is the place where you can find something resembling the old formula.
Cool story, yes I know.

Old Spice: The Fresh Card Game is the only one I can play without wanting to shoot my Xbox in the face.

First I read "advergame" and thought, "Sweet, free gamerscore." Then, I saw Indie Game and those hopes were dashed. Then, I remembered that 80 points was the minimum for indie games and lost all interest. Then I found out they were 240 points each and became disgusted. Thus, the four stages of finding out about poorly conceived advergaming were completed.

I have to PAY to play these games? I don't think I would have downloaded them even if they were free...

Tried the racers game... an interesting take of what was uniracers from SNES days. But I agree, advertising games should be free... like that horrible Yaris game from long ago.

Reason PS3 is better: PSN's insane QA system makes it impossible for damned near any game to get released, let alone a crappy advergame!

This is an Xbox Live Indie game. Oddyly, Microsoft has nothing to do with these and doesn't get involved. Except to hold a contest and promote the best Indie games to XBLA.

I hope there's a free coupon for a bottle (or stick) of Old Spice in each one, because if not, P&G's going to have to deal with a few unhappy imbeciles...

The games are for a contest Old Spice is having for Indie games. There are 5 finalists. House of Spice, Old Spice Racers, The Fresh Card Game, Newton vs The Horde and Old Space.
Voting for the winner starts tomorrow... there should be something on the dashboard about it then.

Hi joystick.
I'm the guy responsible for Newton Vs The Horde so If you want to send hate mail I'm one of the guys to send it to.
I just want to come clean about my motives and give you some info about the competition.
As part of the dreambuildplay competition there was an Old Spice game making competition. 5 finalists were chosen from the entries and these finalists have to compete for votes between the 6th and 26th of April. The team with the most votes gets $60K.
I admit that originally I also didn't like the idea of the competition, dismissed it and I really didn't know much about the old spice brand. Out of curiosity I checked out their website and pissed myself laughing at the guy flying through a tree. That advert alone made me decide to enter the competition. As you'll see if you look at the game you'll also notice the "I'm on a horse" ad was also an influence.
At that point we had a month to make the game. It's a physics based defense game where you build traps and chuck stuff at monsters to stop them getting to you. Our game is admittedly quite hard to get to grips with for some people as the controls are tricky. It also gets very hard towards the end as the rules change and it wont be for everyone. A good number of people who have managed to get to grips with the controls have enjoyed it though.
We also thought the games were going to be free as well but the rules were added to when the finalists were announced so the games had to go through the standard submission process and ours had to be 240 points as that was the lowest price a game can be if it's over 50MB. We are trying to release an updated version that gives more help with the controls and at the same time compress the game so it can be reduced to 80 points instead.
In total honesty though. I'm not asking for people to buy our game. Just vote for it. We want the $60K to fund another independent game, If anything I'd like to appeal the case for Newton Vs the horde because it's a totally original game rather than just a copy of another game with a brand stuck on it. That should count for something at least I hope.
Thanks for bothering to actually read all that :)

Thanks mynk
All we can do is hope that folks play our game long enough to get a handle of the tricky controls and hopefully enjoy it.
Some people might even get to the end for the extra funnies, but maybe that's pushing it. The last levels are rock hard. :)
