Until very recently, there had been a massive void in our knowledge about the violent game-banning bill which was recently ratified by Switzerland's National Council. With language stating it would outlaw the sale of games featuring "cruel acts of violence against humans and human-like creatures for in-game success," we feared it would constitute a ban on, like, everything. Fortunately, that doesn't seem to be the case -- Swiss politician Evi Allemann recently explained in an interview with Swiss news site 20 Minutes (via GamePolitics) that the bill would only affect around 12 "individual games" with extremely graphic content, such as Manhunt and Mortal Kombat.
Allemann commented that PEGI is "not enough," stating that Switzerland or even Europe needs its own body for video game ratings. Apparently, not everyone agrees -- the 20 Minutes article includes a link to a petition against the bill, as well as its adjoining measure which would outlaw the sale of PEGI 16 or 18 games to minors. We'd like to remind these petitioners that Swiss 16-year-olds can legally drink beer, so hey, let's not get greedy.

Yeah, unless those games turn out to have hidden data which shows mild sexual content that can only be accessed by deliberately seeking out the hack online... Then you slap an AO on that sucker and it gets pulled from shelves.

Well at least if your 16 you can play Beer Mortal Combat. Every time you should have seen a fatality drink. Smoke 'em if you got em kids.

Why do people still act like Mortal Kombat's the most violent game out there?
Manhunt was too cool though. Made me cringe a few times. Down with game bans!

Huh, slamming someone's head on a desktop = torture? What is the world coming to?
"It was proven however that an excessive consumption of Actiongames has an influence on the aggression potential."
Bull. Lies. Stop spewing trash.
And I'm assuming we're not talking about the original Mortal Kombat here, are we? Banning 16-bit, pixelated sprite violence?

The ratings do work, it's just that parents don't do their freaking job.

But really, banning some games but not all? What exactly are guidelines they follow when they rate games?

Sir, you are too correct. It is all the parent's fault. There is no reason to ban games. You may as well ban cigarettes and alcohol. If you can't keep your child in check then you are not a good parent. Either they will get their hands on it and you can try to prevent it, or be a bad one I see at gamestop every time buying their 13 year old M rated games.

Waging a war against supply and demand will always result in supply and demand winning. Banning products never works.

Remember that this is the country that recently banned minarets for no reason
Posted: Apr 6th 2010 12:36PM (Unverified) said
I live in Geneva in Switzerland, its one of the mayor cities, we don't have any minarets, I'm pretty sure none were being built, but thank god they got banned because any minute some could have just been thrown up from nowhere
And I'm sure there was some kind of scientific study which proved that whenever minarets appear Muslims are attracted from far way, and like, Muslims are bad and stuff

The construction of minarets was banned, the ones already built continue to function.
@SwindleMonkey I also live in Geneva.

Banning of stuff always ends up giving said products the 'forbidden fruit' theme. It gives publicity, and people will see that it's banned and just want it more.
Look at what happened to Prohibition in the US in the 1913 (I think).

I bet Nintendo are letting out a sigh of relief.
If this would have been strongly applied, then Wii Sports Boxing and Wii Sports Resorts Sword fight could have caused them to be banned.
Equally, Super Smash Bros Brawl and Mario Kart Wii would have to be banned, and as for Zelda, it wouldn't have stood a chance.
Who says that Nintendo doesn't promote violent gaming?

Could this sound any more like political posturing?
I assume this guy thinks that video games turn the average citizen into a violence-hungry sex pest
But in his mind at what point does a videogame cross this line? Is Uncharted OK, but Gears of War not? Is Mass Effect evil but Halo not?
Sounds totally arbitrary, either you ban ALL violent videogames or NONE (hint, you don't ban them, they're harmless)

Obviously none of you live in Switzerland...
ANY law that the goverment tries to pass has to go through the people. And if ANY law passes that the people disagree with, we can launch a referendum and change the law OURSELVES.
Power to the people in this country. Hell, we even dictate how much we tax ourselves.
This law will never pass anyways.

The Swiss did kick ass the first time they tried to ban smoking though, lasted like 2 days
Also that nuts law about animals being represented by lawyers

First time? We banned smoking per state in this country, not on a federal level, and currently, in the two states I go to (work in one, live in the other), smoking is banned in ALL public spaces, including bars and nightclubs.
As for the animal law, it was shot down with over 60% of negative responses. Unlike in most countries, we can PROPOSE something and also REJECT stupid proposals.
Maybe research something before spouting nonsense about another country?

I wasn't having a go at the Swiss in the above post, I know the animal law got shot down, I was saying that was a good thing
As for the smoking, I was talking about the ban in the canton of Geneva. Smoking was outlawed in public indoor spaces, then the ban was overturned literally days later, I think it was sometime late 2008
I don't need to research anything, as I live in Switzerland
I'm sorry if you took offense at some of my earlier comments, I actually love living in Geneva, I wouldn't ever want to live in the UK (where I'm from).
It is a bit 80's though

Does it really matter if they're banned? Germany and France are two steps away.
