The Xbox 360 system update enabling USB storage is live and ready to help you explore the joyous world of non-proprietary storage options. Rules are the same as previously noted: USB devices need to be over 1GB, but can only use 16GB of available storage. Users can use two sticks at once for 32GB, but can switch out units any time, limiting their storage potential by how many USB devices they've got lying around.
The update takes approximately five minutes with a standard cable connection. For those who don't believe in internets, the update will also be available on the branded 16 GB Xbox 360 USB sticks set to debut in May.

More like 3-5 minutes depending on your connection

You on dial-up there guy? Actually, even dial-up wouldn't take that long I wouldn't think.
Granted, I haven't actually done this update yet. But considering that the entire NXE update, which was the biggest one, took about 8 seconds from clicking start to being finished, I'm doubting this one takes anywhere near what you're talking about.

I guess you forgot how long the original NXE update too. It had a quick 5 second download, but that was only downloading the program that then downloaded the NXE.
Sadly, the ultra-fast dash updates of the old days seem to be left behind now.
5 minutes does seem kind of far fetched though.

I can see how it would be annoying if you only wanted to play your PS3 once a month for two hours. Then all the updating and syncing would seem like a chore but if you use your PS3 on semi-regular basis, it not really an issue, at least not for me.
That's definitely not a good reason to give up on a console.

I'm going to eat my words a bit here as I just did mine over lunch (though am still far from Chris' numbers).
52 seconds, which is by far the longest I've ever had one take (and no "install" time afterwards).
My connection is just the basic Comcast Cable. Typically takes about 4+ minutes for a PS3 update not counting install time.

I don't get why people complain about how long it takes to load new firmwares, and then come on here and spend a few minutes posting about it with their leisure time. If you didn't post here, you'd easily make the time back you lost for installing the firmware. :\
It's sort of like you just like complaining.

Uh, what? Most of us are posting from work or somewhere not in front of our TV.
Seriously, you could apply what you just said to just about anything on the planet. Do you seriously go around and update everything you own all day so you make sure it's completely ready to go the next time you use it?
When you want to play games, you want to play games. You don't go around updating your consoles when you don't want to play games so it will be ready the next time you do. That's ridiculously stupid overhead.
Imagine if you had to update the firmware on your car before it would drive. Would you seriously never complain about it, knowing that some mirror copy of you would just say "in the time you just spent complaining about it, you could have been updating the firmware on your car".
Really, that was a ridiculous comment.

I'm not expecting a space fix, honestly... Last I heard with the hard drives, even if you make your own, you're still stuck within MS's size limitations. I'm sure the rules are different if you mod and avoid LIVE, though.
Anyway, about time with this. I'd like to keep my profile, saves and XBLA titles on one of these.

Yeah my PS3 update never really takes more than a few minutes, but the frequency of the updates really pisses me off. It's not so bad now, but there was a time when every freaking time I turned my PS3 on I had to do a system update.
Just wait a month and put all that shit out together Sony!

you prefer gaming on your Xbox because you have to update your PS3 once a month? Well, that's perfectly rational.

@BIGGEN yea sadly I have to remember that....but what it boils down to is this....either download via PC on a thumbdrive and install it....OR don't connect your PS3 to the Internet at all....I remember refusing to connect my PS2 via dial-up 7 years ago when I was forced to have that due to my area not having a faster option at the time....

maybe once a month for firmware, but i go to play PAIN, there's another update. and any other game i have saved that i may actually have a few minutes for, another update. i like to sit down and play my games that i paid for and not be met with a "there is an update for this game." and like several have mentioned above, the updates aren't quick, especially with slow dsl. come play at my house sometime. you'll be rational in no time.

It really can get very annoying, especially if it's a second console that you don't turn on as much.
Some friends recently started playing UC2 again, so I went to jump online with them. System update, several minutes to download. Then install the system update, several more minutes. Reboot. Then UC2 update, several minutes to download. Then UC2 install, several more minutes. Reboot. (Finally) get into UC, click "multiplayer" and then get met with "syncing live data" for another 20 minutes, which I restarted twice half-way through since I thought something had frozen and I couldn't jump into a party with my friends and just ask them.
All in all, waaaaaay too long to boot up a freaking game.

Speaking of connections and downloading times. You guys could have my internet! PS3 updates take about 2 hours usually, and I think NXE took almost 1 hour! But usually xbox updates take around 20 to 30 minutes
I pay for 1.5mb dsl and I get about 1/3 of that by the time it reaches my house. I'm lucky to get 45kb/s download speeds, and that's better than what I was getting a year ago. Alas its my only option except satellite and dial up. So don't feel bad if it takes 3-5 minutes to download an update, there is always people like me with way worse. =]

I'm not saying standard HDDs aren't cheaper, I'm saying that USB flash drives are less cost-efficient than even proprietary 360 HDDs.
And if you really wanted to you could take the casing off the 360 drive and reformat it for use elsewhere, not that you'd really ever have a need.

250gb 360 HDD from amazon is $.52/GB"
Dude a 16GB USB Flash drive is versatile, unlike the 360's 250GB harddrive.
I think this would be a more appropriate comparison:

Reasons flash drives are Neat-O:
1. Can be used on PC, Mac, some cars, and many other devices other than an Xbox 360
1a. Due to partitioning, it can be used for both the 360 AND other uses
2. Can be used to back up what's already on your Xbox 360 hard drive
3. Can be used to bring game saves/gamer profiles to a friend's house
So no, it's not a waste to buy/use a flash drive.

You don't even have to use the whole thing for Xbox storage...so if you've got one laying around, you can use it if you need it.
