The Xbox 360 system update enabling USB storage is live and ready to help you explore the joyous world of non-proprietary storage options. Rules are the same as previously noted: USB devices need to be over 1GB, but can only use 16GB of available storage. Users can use two sticks at once for 32GB, but can switch out units any time, limiting their storage potential by how many USB devices they've got lying around.
The update takes approximately five minutes with a standard cable connection. For those who don't believe in internets, the update will also be available on the branded 16 GB Xbox 360 USB sticks set to debut in May.

I just did mine during lunch so I'm going to eat my words a bit here (though am still far from Chris' numbers).
52 seconds, which is by far the longest I've ever had one take (and no "install" time afterwards).

To those who are wondering:
Prior to formatting, it says:
"Configure now to set up your USB device for Xbox 360 storage. Everything on the device WILL BE REMOVED, and all of its space, up to 16 GB, will be reserved for Xbox 360 storage.
Devices used for Xbox 360 storage must be at least 1 GB."
So yeah. it'll wipe your hard drive/flash drive clean of whatever is already on there.

I formatted a 16gb stick, and when it was done, it told me it was "below standards" and my decrease performance of my system when playing content from this drive. The only info I've been able to dig up is basically "for best performance, buy the officially branded drives"
Has anyone else encountered this, yet?

Ahh you've discovered that not all Flash drives are created equal. The through put is pretty important and you should check the specs before you buy one.

Ah, thanks. Yeah, it was a cheaper drive, 30 bucks retail, plus my employee discount.

$21 for a 16GB jump drive! Provided it's a credit card style I think it's legit. :/

Not cool, Joystiq. I tipped you about this last night at the exact time it happened (4 am your time) and I get no credit in the article?

Might be a crazy thought, but what if I made 2 16gb partitions on a 32gb flash drive? Would it show up as 2 and skate the rules? Apply that to larger drives and I might be on to something.
Still pretty tedious though.
