The word-of-mouth we reported on last week was proven accurate this morning, when Sega confirmed that it has shut down Sega Studios San Francisco (formerly Secret Level), developer of Iron Man and Golden Axe: Beast Rider. An unnamed Sega representative issued a statement to IndustryGamers, offering condolences to the recently unemployed developers, while promising to "continue to pursue external development opportunities all over the world," a fact we're sure the aforementioned jobless truly appreciate.
The only unknown in this scenario is the fate of the studio's swan song, the video game adaptation of Iron Man 2. Rumor has it that the game was finished, but Sega's yet to issue a statement on its completion. We've contacted Sega to find out the game's status, and to find out how many naughty Easter eggs its disgruntled developers embedded within it after being informed their jobs were forfeit.
Update: A Sega representative has confirmed that Iron Man 2's May 4 release date hasn't been affected by the studio's closure.

I'm never happy about people losing their jobs, but those game were atrocities.

I think flying games are still relatively difficult to pull off....notice that nobody's done it right yet?
Dark Void was my big hope, and while I do enjoy it, it's a game that needs some more polish.

MLS, are you insinuating that Nintendo Fanboys are not true gamers?

The game isn't directly holding to the movie so that's a plus for the story.....I am just hoping they fixed the flying controls....that is what made the first game suck

The Virtual Boy rocked when it wasn't giving you headaches.

@OzCueball,
You might want to look up the term "swan song" because I don't think it means what you think it means. The Virtual Boy could hardly be considered Nintendo's swan song since, yanno, they're still around. Secret Level/SSSF on the other hand? They are no more, so Iron Man 2 is most certainly their swan song.

It sucks that Sega won't put forth the effort to make a really great Iron Man game. I mean it's possible IM2 could be better, but I haven't been impressed by any of the footage I've seen so far. It's all fairly generic.

It's funny that you say that when it's fairly obvious that what's happening here is Sega closing a studio because it failed not once, but 3 times in a row to deliver games that meet whatever internal quality standards they have set. It's not sales figures obviously, since Iron Man 2 hasn't even shipped yet.

Unfortunately, this is the inevitable result of lackluster games.

Those games sucked, but so does trying to make pay-roll when you're in one of the world's most expensive (and anti-business climate) cities.
