Like all responsible journalists worth their salt, we're inherently distrustful of advertising and the incredible power it wields over us -- err, rather consumers. But we feel like you deserve to know that there's a special place in our coldly detached hearts for pretend PS3 pitchman Kevin Butler. And we're apparently not alone.
According to what SCEA marketing boss Peter Dille told the MI6 marketing conference in San Francisco last week, purchasing intent for the PS3 is up 36 percent since the "It Only Does Everything" campaign started last year. Now, does the price drop that accompanied the campaign figure into that? Of course. But according to IGN, Dille added, "we know from research that consumers are more educated as well."
It looks like Kevin doesn't need to sweat Craig any longer.

The first ad with Dustin Pedroia was awesome.
The funny thing is that the actor, Jeremy Lambert played a similar character for some GEICO ads a while back and those were horrible.
Kudos to whoever is doing this campaign for Sony for seeing the potential and pulling it all together.

Yup. So much better and SOO much more relatable than the artsy white-room ads. Those initial ads were just intentionally obscure, and trying to build an ethos around the PS3 that just wasn't there. They came off as standoffish, and didn't do much to connect with anyone who didn't already know about it / want one. Now we have an middle aged man who is funny and quirky (read: a bit nerdy) and explains in a straightforward way what the machine can do, and why the games are great. This goes a long way towards relating to their actual potential audience.

these ads must really be helping sales, because I CAN'T FIND A PS3 IN STOCK ANYWHERE :(

And not surprising, they actually WERE ads.
Because before, the PS3 had either no ads, or strange, almost unrelated ads.

Seriously, sold out? I live in the UK and sony are having serious trouble selling any consoles seriously, my mate runs a shop, selling ps3s cheaper than the uks biggest retailer and still cant shift them, sadly theres less and less exclusive titles. We still have Blu RAy!. but most people here seem to buy a wii and the only "game" they play is wii fit, idiots

I'm a fan of Kevin's on facebook. You should be too.
Also yes the new marketing team seems to be working out great. He walked in our lives but now I can't imagine it without him.

It'd be way more funny if they just said "Fat Meghan Fox bathwater" over and over and over and over again.

More proof that an effective marketing campaign is that important. The Kevin Butler ads are far better than a crying baby.
