In the pilot episode of a new web series titled "Immersion," the comedic machinimists of Rooster Teeth attempted to bring a popular action game phenomenon into the real world: What if you could really drive a car from a third-person perspective? Using a pole, some dumbbells, an expensive camera and some vision-impairing black sheets, the troupe was able to have an entertaining, albeit entirely irresponsible out-of-car driving experience. Check out the NSFW video after the jump to see their automotive shenanigans in action.

Hey, beto, here's a warning from me to you:
"First" is a banable (ban-able?) offense around here.

It's also banal-ably boring no matter where you are.

Cool idea but why did they use GTA4 as a reference? GTA4's camera is horrible for driving even in the game because it's way too close to the car. I remember I had to constantly flick the camera upwards with the right analog stick in order to see what was ahead on the road. I think they should have used Gran Turismo or Forza's fixed third person camera since it's a little bit higher and you can clearly see what lies ahead on the road.

You *can* change the camera view in GTA4. But one of the things that drew me into the game was using the really close view, and watching the road through the back and front windows. For some reason, seeing the whole car--inside and out--bouncing around made things seem much more lifelike.

Um, what? When did I say anything about hookers?
I was simply saying that I happen to like their camera set up. That's all.

But I do also agree that the other camera settings aren't high enough.

That's pretty cool. It'd be better if the camera was a little higher up (so you can see more of the road immediately in front of you) but it's still really cool.

Yeah I hate having to hold the right stick "just so". But clearly they're going for GTA4 realism. :) I would love to try it.
Now that I think about it, I would absolutely use cockpit view for driving games that require precision (like real life), but I don't play any of those. I play driving games where you need to know who's on your bumper and exactly where to start your power drift.

Camera really seems like it should have been higher up than it was, as I remember having a better view of the front of the car in GTA IV. Other than that though, in racing games and such I usually prefer driving in the windshield view myself.

Genius. Little do we know this is how people will drive in the future.

I had to google VIKI. Can't believe I don't remember that name from the movie I, Robot.
I wouldn't mind having a central DPS/DMV computer that would direct all traffic. The only thing that would suck is the long waiting times to get anywhere with them.

How about assisted driving? Just imagine a GPS that does everything in real time but can also help you avoid accidents by switching lanes/braking should it detect the vehicle in front of you suddenly stopped.

only reason you enjoy driving is because you don't have to drive 2+ hours a day. I'd love for an auto driving system, that way i can sleep or do my work on the trip.

Lucky them to have a Canon 5D MKII handy; a setup like that costs at least $4000. I guess they couldn't find a cheaper camera with a wide angle lens...

Yeah it's true you could change the camera but once you started going very fast the camera would always go a bit lower. I also sometimes enjoyed using the camera you described because I could see the car details better but I had to move the camera too much.
Still my point was that the camera that they used in the experiment was fixed and taking that into consideration they should have placed it higher. It's still a cool experiment though.

The problem with this is that the camera is static. It makes it look like the environment is moving around the car instead of the car moving around the environment. In GTA4, the camera was dynamic and you could see your car swerving and such.
I'm pretty sure if there was a dynamic camera ( not sure how they would manage that ) it would be a lot easier to drive.
Good video and experiment though!

Great idea for an experiment. I imagine they would have had an easier time driving a smaller car with a better turning radius, but I understand that it would be more difficult to attach the camera without having access to a hitch. Maybe a Jeep Wrangler would make it simpler?

Why is a spambot biographying Aerosmith in two different languages in the comments of a videogame website?
Also, this video combined everything I love about Mythbusters, everything I love about Jackass, and added video games.
