FFXIV's already confirmed for PS3 and PC. 360 is up in the air, but XIV is going to be on consoles again. Let's just hope this time the PC version's controls aren't massacred by the necessity of making game control well on consoles.

FFXI was originally designed for ps2 actually. The limitations of the console actually have restricted certain areas of expansion for the game on other platforms (like backpack storage space).

Another problem caused by console support for FFXI is software parity. All players inhabit the same servers regardless of platform (ps2, 360, and pc). The way that SE has handled this is by creating a sort of "emulation layer" between the game code (native ps2 code) and the platform (360 or pc).

Because of this, certain standard features on those platforms aren't supported (like anti-aliasing). Also, even though the game is 7 years old and should fly on modern hardware, it can chug if there are too many players/critters on the screen at once.

Just take my word for it as a player of an MMO that is multi-platform: it isn't really all that great. Sure you get more players, but it really holds the more powerful platforms back.

Considering that they now have around just 100,000 subscribers (according to a podcast interview with one of the devs), I would assume their current goal would be to fix the game.

@ Scott...that's really personal opinion, I think it's quite fun. It needs some work definitely, but any MMORPG is going to have quite a few issues when it's first released.

I think it has to do with the "first episode" being free. You'd have to pay for the rest later.

Looks like they haven't got the subscriber numbers to justify porting it, I'd say.

Console fans, try not to get overly desperate for an MMO that you'll accept any piece of trash. Star Trek online shouldn't even exist, let alone being considered for console release. It'll just sour the MMO taste for console users. Cryptic should just move that game far FAR to the back of the stove until it falls off the back and is eaten by rats.

Hmmm, lets see...

Most reviews state that STO has so-so ship combat, totally useless away team missions, nearly no exploration and the quests are cookie-cutter affairs that lack any real trekkie-ness.

No wonder they're not in a hurry to port it anywhere. If you want to go on a grinding spree on consoles, look no further than Too Human, that's available RIGHT NOW. Or maybe Phantasy Star Universe. (Which is actually quite fun, if you can resist grinding the White Dragon mission over and over, but I'm just saying...)

Pretty much since they couldn't do this multiplatform they weren't gonna do it at all. That's a damn shame. They are just GIVING away marketshare to FFXIV. Way to go Cryptic. What a smart business move.

Ok, I'm a player of STO and let's get a few things straight. The game doesn't suck. Sure it's not the most awesome sauce game this side of awesome ville but it doesn't suck. I'd call it a C+ honestly, comparing it to a lot of other MMOs out there I'm finding it more fun if only in that it's a change of venue. So people slagging it who haven't played it (and when you say "from what I hear" that counts as slagging without playing.) If you play it and don't like it keen beans, I find the away missions drudgery at times so I agree with some of the comments but who's to say after a while it wont polish up nice.

Now, next is the assumption "not enough subscriber numbers to justify a port" is just silly. Anyone paying ANY sort of attention realises MS is being weird about letting MMOs through the Live service. Let's look at their history here, Age of Conan touted as this huge Xbox release and it's been dropped. Marvel Online, killed by Microsoft in a disupute over rights. Cryptic (who had MO in the can at the time) took the work they did on MO and turned it in to Champions. This is tech that was designed to run on the Xbox just fine and dandy (and having played Champions with an Xbox controller I can tell you it works just fine.) About the same time Champions bit the dust on the console so did STO. Hell even a money press like FF XIV isn't getting clear passage on 360 (if you think it's a Cryptic sucks thing.) Why? Every developer has if not outright said implied Microsoft is killing the projects with lack of willingness to co-operate with developers. Which is weird given their work. My guess is it's an unwillingness to open up the system to other servers. Look at how fast interoperability as a selling feature died between 360 and PC. Shadowrun was the only game to ever make it out. Also they are renowned for taking FOREVER to move something through the approval process which just wont cut it for MMOs which patch pretty much non-stop.

So before you get on the Cryptic sucks donky balls band wagon, which you are entitled to be on, let's point to the real culprit. Microsoft. Hell they even killed their own in house Halo game. HALO! I mean that's just the goose that lays the golden eggs there!

Hmm, considering MS's trend for excessive greed lately (heck, Game Room is nothing more than a thinly veiled points leech!), I'd wager that the only MMO we'll be seeing on 360 will be a 100% Microsoft thing, so they don't have to share the subscription winnings.

Just a thought.

I'd not be suprised, what I find weird though is they enter in to these partnerships, advertise the hell out of it touting it at E3 and press events and then not just throw the baby out with the bath water but make sure it's good and drowned, set some pirranah on it, and then boil it up before tossing it out. It's a weird thing about them and MMOs like there's a breakdown in communication somewhere between Microsoft Game Studios and the Live folks or something.
