We're constantly looking for reasons to re-purchase the Lord of the Rings film trilogy -- a fact clearly evidenced by our ownership of the theatrical versions of the films, the extended director's cut of each movie, the Blu-ray version of the trilogy, and another set of each of those, so we can keep one in mint condition, and watch the other on a bi-weekly basis.
A recent PlayStation.Blog post has informed us that we'll need to shell out for yet another version of the films: The HD, downloadable trilogy on the PlayStation Store. Not only does it curtail our need to purchase two versions of the bundle, but it also comes with a free, LoTR-based dynamic PS3 theme. We've already collected a number of background skins for Sony's home gaming console, but we have a feeling this one has a pretty good shot at ruling them all.

I'm not sure towards whom I should direct my rage for the new Blu-ray pack. It's just the theatrical releases, and there supposedly no plans for the extended, but you just KNOW that their intentions is to sell everyone two box sets - the theatrical AND then the Extended. Pure evil.

Three sets.
This, the extended set, then the 4-pack with The Hobbit. Lucas has taught the world it's cool to resell your films as many times as humanly possible, because people will bite.

I hope New Line cinema fix the picture quality for the Extended version because they messed it up on the Theatrical version:

Upside...price discount for those not interested in the extended editions.

How is Amazon.ca's pricing MUCH cheaper than that of Amazon.com for this release? That's rare. Is the Canadian dollar doing that well? lol

Next year, huh?
Might want to wait until a release is announced before you mark it down on a calender. I wouldn't expect to see the EE's until 2012 at the very least, in time for the first Hobbit movie to hit home video.

Don't be stupid. It's not the same and how did you turn 'free theme' into a bad thing?

WTF? Does ever movie come with a dynamic theme? Is it a industry standard to include dynamic themes for PS3s? It's an incentive to buy it. It doesn't cost triliogy+dynamic theme. Its good news if you want to buy the HD movies on PSN, if you don't then don't but it.

Why 'whine' about this at all? I should have Captain Planet revoke your Planeteer status.

Nice try, TBS, but we all know that Planet only listens to Uncle Jesse.

Didn't I read somewhere that the Free Dynamic Theme thing is a "limited time offer"?
Also, I hate bonuses like that. It's like adding a trailer to a DVD and calling it a "special feature".
"Oh wow! A theme for my PS3! Now I HAVE to buy it!"

You know I wouldn't mind your trolling comment so much if posted something funny or worth reading, but you're just being a dick.
For example : "Oh wow! A theme for my PS3! Now I HAVE to buy it!"
No one is implying this. Its just a nice little bonus for those who wish to buy it that way. What do you want them to offer, free LOTRs car w/ every purchase?

Didn't come off as trolling to me. The distinction I'd make, is that were this a physical, retail release, I feel that the addition of PS3 content would do more to incent me to buy it. I don't really buy DVDs/Blurays anymore, but were they doing more in terms of digital content bonuses for PS3/360 I may be more likely to actually buy movies nowadays. I am not interested in the idea of 'buying' a movie from PSN/Zune.

Why am I being a dick? I'm sick of people adding a crappy leaflet to my video game box, calling it a "limited edition" with an artbook and hoping that people will think this is the best thing ever and now will buy 10 copies.
Either give us something worthwile, or stop overadvertising something that costed you 0.01 to make but you claim it adds to the purchase value greatly.
Why is having an opinion, trolling?

I don't understand the big deal of Netflix streaming. The library of titles available to stream is EXTREMELY limited. I guess it's just a nice little bonus for the DVDs/Blu-ray by mail, but still, everyone always talks how great it is.

Dexter, Weeds, Dr. Who.
The fact that they are all there makes it worth it.

Kudos to the people who put this idea forward, it's exactly what Digital Distribution minded companies need to be thinking aout if the want to prise people away from hard copy purchases...
However, I'll still only be buying the BR extended version so ner. I'm set in my ways, what can I say?

Would want it on physical media to allow movement of the awesomeness that is the trilogy from one place to another.
I already have the video boxset of the trilogy (watched that much that it is now barely watchable) and the special extended trilogy on DVD, so I'll end up waiting until the special extended edition is on bluray, and even then probably wait until they have the 2 hobbit films out, just so that if they decide to put all 5 together in a boxset, i'll have that boxset instead. Also not sure if they're going to go to the effort of putting the 3 films into 3D yet. Depends if they put the hobbit in 3D or not because apparently if they do, then LOTR will follow suit.

All this lord of the rings talk is making me want to play LOTRO again.
The community of that game is greater than any I've played but I had to stop playing because of some issues at the time.
Shit...I'm going to have to resub to this till 14.
Oh and I was just thinking of when a blu-ray version would appear when TBS was showing the movies again last week.
Should be a good time.

I'd love to go back and play more LOTRO. Only problem is...I'm a completionist and there are chapters and stories that I can't go back through because everyone is on the new content. I'd like to complete and see everything!
