We're constantly looking for reasons to re-purchase the Lord of the Rings film trilogy -- a fact clearly evidenced by our ownership of the theatrical versions of the films, the extended director's cut of each movie, the Blu-ray version of the trilogy, and another set of each of those, so we can keep one in mint condition, and watch the other on a bi-weekly basis.
A recent PlayStation.Blog post has informed us that we'll need to shell out for yet another version of the films: The HD, downloadable trilogy on the PlayStation Store. Not only does it curtail our need to purchase two versions of the bundle, but it also comes with a free, LoTR-based dynamic PS3 theme. We've already collected a number of background skins for Sony's home gaming console, but we have a feeling this one has a pretty good shot at ruling them all.

@Dafrety You can download it as many times as you need and on up to 5 consoles.

Every time you move from a old console to a new console you have to deactivate your system, login to your new one and then activate your system. There should be an option for both video and game content. Then, all you have to do is go to your download history and re-download it.

You're right. I bought a movie I love. Shame on me. And no, I didn't buy it for a free background. Also, I bought it on Blu-ray. The versions on PSN or LIVE don't have lossless audio, nor is the video quite as good as Blu-ray.

lol...that was the only one where I just bought the movie set and not the collector's box set because that Gollum freaked me out. Love the city of Gondor for ROTK though.

Heard the HD (specifically Blu-Ray version) of the trilogy is not good in visual quality. Will just wait for the extended version where they might fix the issue.

My 60gb yellow lighted. Not only did sony not admit that the flaw was with their console, but they jacked me out of ALL of my previously purchased video content (and I bought prolificly!). So...why would I spend $60 on a download when I can get it on disc...and, y'know, keep it! PSN video service- one download, one console and you better pray nothing ever happens to your machine! That theme is quite the incentive though, huh? ......let the flaming begin! (But I'm not wrong).

I feel your pain. 3rd YLOD for me on my 60GB, though after going bananas on a supervisor, they fixed my last one free as a "gesture of good faith" which is great, but doesn't bring my data or gamesaves back. Did they offer you an "upgrade" to a Slim model? That's about the best admission of a hardware flaw your going to get and makes said design flaw more painfully obvious to me.
As for your video content, call customer service. They will activate your new system and deactivate your old one- and also place all your old video content in a download folder such as the one you have automatically in the game store. You can get it all back, it just takes a phone call. You also won't be able to buy any video content until you do this, FYI. Trust me, been here a few times before, unfortunately... :/

If it's the Dynamic Theme that was put up in the PSN Store this week, it's by far the most sorry excuse for a Dynamic Theme I've seen yet. I have several other Dynamic Themes and the animation is excellent- however this theme’s animation is laughable. There’s about 6 frames of animation and they tick by at about 2 fps. The preview image is a sunny, green Rivendale scene (wrong spelling, don’t care) and then what I end up with is a drab, Mordor landscape? So ugly and so b o r i n g. As a theme designer myself, I’m disgusted by sloppy work like this and disappointed that Sony doesn’t hold their premium content partners to higher standards and perform better QC.
Not worth $3 and certainly not worth buying an inferior set of "theatrical version" Blu-rays- especially when the Director's Cuts are on the way soon.
Shame on you, New Line. And shame on Sony for letting you sell us this trash.

@ Ashitaka
Hahahahaha... I am NO X-bot. I love my PS3 (even though it's YLODed on me 3 times) and my PSP and I have always been die-hard Sony DF. I have a 360 that is essentially a paperweight that occasionally plays DVDs. Fact is, this theme f*cking sucks my ass. I am allowed to be critical when I feel like I've been ripped-off and you should be too. Don't assume that anyone who has anything slightly negative to say is trying to bash the company that served the crap to them on a silver platter. Download this POS theme for $3 and we'll see how happy you are with it. Don't just choke down every sh*t piece of content they give you and smile. Pathetic, seriously. Even the best companies pull some shady BS sometimes.
But keep pointing fingers and sticking your nose in the air. See how far that gets you...

Whatever. I actually like both the theatrical and extended versions. LOL. And I think the element of viewer surprise with Aragorn rushing into battle near the end was neutered in the extended version.

I just bought the XBL theme last night. I'm not sure how "dynamic" it is, but alcohol had alot to do with that purchase
