- GamePro (5/5): "While it might not be the back-to-basics game fans were expecting, Conviction is an outstanding title from top to bottom."
- IGN (93/100): "Despite a few questionable level design choices, Splinter Cell: Conviction is a great addition to the series. There's no way I could go back to a stealth game as it used to be; I've been converted."
- OXM (85/100): "Ultimately, of course, Conviction shouldn't be judged on what it isn't, but rather what it is - and whether that game is worth your $60. Quite frankly, we like classic Splinter Cell better, but this doesn't make Conviction a bad game."
- GiantBomb (4/5): "Splinter Cell: Conviction is the most accessible Splinter Cell game yet. It gives you the firepower to shoot your way out of your mistakes, but also makes the stealth side of things fun, rewarding, and significantly easier than just attempting to run around and shoot. Its only serious issue is that it doesn't feel especially substantial or replayable."
Metareview: Splinter Cell: Conviction

You've read our even-tempered, thought-provoking analysis of Sam Fisher's latest, slightly less stealthy exploits in Splinter Cell: Conviction, but say -- hypothetically -- you want to know what some of our game-adjudicating peers thought about the game. Overlooking your blatant infidelity, we'd be happy to provide you with a wide smattering of opinions. Let's just not make a habit of this, okay?

I'm really really loving it so far. I just beat chaos theory again on monday to get the "classic" splinter cell fresh in mind, and I'm finding this way better. I still really enjoyed the previous ones, but this one really feels right, Sam Fisher shouldnt be bound to shadows and No Kill orders, he should be neck snapping everyone he sees and taking out squads of guys at once!

Yeah, I agree - the change up is nice. I got to play for about an hour last night, and it was good fun. Now I just need to talk up the game to my friends so they buy it and I have someone besides random strangers to play co-op with.

The shortness of the campaign combined with Giant Bomb's "it doesn't feel especially substantial or replayable" put the game on my rent list.
Is there anything that will keep you coming back after you beat it the first time? At 40 dollars right now, I'm tempted.

even without spies vs mercs, the multiplayer is still fantastic, and even if you dont have an internet connection or at least no friends, there's "Deniable Ops" that are basically Splinter Cell bonus missions which can be done in coop or alone.

Summary:
Are there any competitive multiplayer modes? Even the co-op missions seem like something that could be completed rather quickly.

There are also smaller meta goals that you can complete in the campaign for points to spend on equipment upgrades, kinda like the meta-goals in CoD multiplayer where you have to kill ten enemies with a certain weapon, or in a certain style.

you should see the shit storm on ign where all the PS3 fanboys got mad because Splinter cell got the same rating as God of war 3 LOL it is hilarious.
and to top it off after giving GOD3 a 9,3 and citing it only being 10hrs as the reason for the deductions , they come along and say Splinter Cell was only 5hrs and still gave it the same score. lol

IGN's ranking system is queer.
SC doesn't get above a 9 in any category, and it gets a 9.3
God of War 3 was the same way. The scores averaged 8.9, and it got a 9.3
It's like they just.. take the average and add a random bunch of points to it. =P

From http://games.ign.com/ratings.html
"Q: If your overall score isn't an average of the categories, then why have them?
A: The purpose of our scored categories -- and the overall score, for that matter -- is to provide our readers with a product conclusion "at a glance." For instance, some readers may not have time to read all the text of our reviews, so the individual categories, closing comments, and overall score are tools to give visitors a quick rundown of our analysis no matter the subject."

I don't understand why people would care about something like that. I mean they're both good games right? Then again, I don't think I'll understand the childish mentality most fanboys have.

And this is why joystiq's way of not giving a number will always be better. Its bad enough people arguing over 8 and 9's but then they start adding in .3's and .5's
Its just ridiculous.

I don't even know why this has to be compared to GOW3, except if you're all into fanboy wars -- the only thing they have in common is proximity in release dates. They're both good games on their own merits. Now, if they were compared with Batman AA and MGS4, I could understand. At least you can argue gameplay mechanics.
BTW IGN is just one review source. It's not meant to be the definitive review site. That's why we have metareviews and metareview sites like Metacritic and Gamerankings. In the end, they're all just numbers selected from different sources and once you get above around mid 80's or higher they're all considered good games.

Leave it to Big Fat to come along and start trolling.
SC Conviction is only 5 hours? Damn that's probably an incredible 5 hours! Thats like less than one sitting. Just goes to show it must be awesome to get a 9 and have that short of length.

And leave it to Tigre to come and troll as well.
The game is around 7 hours which is around the same length as God of War 3 so your point doesn't make any sense at all.
Plus a 5 hour co-op campaign.
Plus multiplayer.

It's like Batman Arkham Asylum, but you can actually KILL people this time! Can't grapple, though. Alright, but if Sam Fisher had a grapple gun, this game would be SO AWESOME.

They really improved Splinter Cell, this is my fav, hands down. I love how theatrical the gameplay is and how the controls feel a lot more loose. I just wish that they would have added more environmental options like the original a so forth.

I think Ubisoft scraped the game they were originally making and grabbed the code to a Jack Bauer game and just released that.
Nothing wrong with that but this game plays like a new IP not splinter cell and sadly based on the reviews none of the reviewers were fans of the original anyways so they are happy.

see? Exactly, but DA was the exact same thing as Chaos Theory, just without the light and sound meters, but you were just left to judge those yourself, and people treat it like some bastard child of the franchise when it was just as good if not better than all the others

I don't get the people whining about how the game isn't like previous incarnations. You have to look at it in the context of the narrative. Sam Fisher isn't bound to the same rules as before so the gameplay has to reflect that. Granted it feels less stealthy and more "24", it came out pretty damned good. If you want the same experience as previous Splinter Cells, go play them.

That's the equivalent of a 4/5, which was GiantBomb's score so you can't accuse them of playing favorites.

Man, I read Joystiq's review just now, and I share the sentiment of what the reviewer was saying. I guess I could be called a hardcore stealth fan, but once a while I just go "eff it" and then just turn a stealth game into a shooter (if I can). Splinter Cell often times kept me thinking "I'm doing something wrong." Like I shouldn't be detected at all, and yet the mechanism of the "last known location" tries to convince me otherwise, rather unsuccessfully.
