"The wired PS3 controller swaps the Dual Shock's D-pad and left stick placement to be more like the Xbox 360 controller."

Lolwut? I can't stand that, it feels so awkward. Why in the hell they would want to do that is beyond me. Also, wired? Really?

Yeah, I don't get that either.

The placement is pretty much perfect how it is.

Thats the ergonomically correct position for the left thumb stick.

So you're saying it's the "ergonically correct" position for the left thumb stick but not the right? Wouldn't you rather have symmetry? Having one low and one high is just strange.

Agreed, swapping the dpad/analog stick is ergonomically incorrect.

And why didn't they fix 360's dpad? Those circle intellivision dpads suck!

Spartan is actually right. The position of the left stick is where the thumb naturally falls, unlike the PS3 controller. We're just used to having the sticks lined-up.

i like the 360s thumbstick placement better because i've got pretty big hands. Ps3 controllers feel cramped too me. I have to position my thumbs in an awkward way. Even with the 360 right analog.

But like I said, if you want to say that then you might as well raise the right stick too. It's not like your left and right hands are differently shaped.

Anyways, it just feels awkward to me. I'm sure it does for a lot of other PS3 gamers. Don't know who they're targeting with that.

Bigfat, who do you think you're trying to fool? We all know you don't play FPS games on a PS3. Hell, I doubt you even own a PS3. And that last comment is an obvious attempt at trying to get something started.

Think for a moment to how we played games before the DualShock, including on the PlayStation. The DualShock wasn't designed to eradicate the D-Pad as your movement input, nor was it designed to be a new way to control your games, rather it was simply a compromise on giving you analogue sticks while still having that familiar layout. You played your games before with your thumb comfortably on the d-pad, in line with the face buttons. Then all of a sudden you played your games with your thumb on the left analogue stick placed below the face buttons.

In that regard, Xbox, Xbox 360, GameCube, Saturn 3D, and Dreamcast controllers are all more in line than the DualShock/SIXAXIS for playing 3D / Analogue controlled games as the SNES, Genesis, original PlayStation controller, etc . . . were to playing 2D games with a D-Pad.

"We all know you don't play FPS games on a PS3."

yes i do. I go over friends house and play theres all the time. And my main complaint is always the controller feels too alien.

"Hell, I doubt you even own a PS3."

you got me there, as stated above i dont own a PS3.

but thats besides the point, because when i do play FPS on the PS3 i plead for a 360 controller (often saying its the controllers fault for me losing lol)

yeah there was an EGM i had read a few years ago where the xbox guy was basically saying he was mad at the PS3 guys because there controller was seen as better simply because it had been used for so long, and how they didnt really change with the times.

I agree with Traceur, I can believe that it's the better position for the stick, but there should be symmetry.

To go with what Granger says...

Nowadays, what do you use more often: the left analog stick or the digital pad? Unless you're huge on fighters (and possibly shmups), you'd probably say the stick (plus, you should have an arcade stick for those kind of games, anyways).

And with your right hand, what do you use more often, the face buttons or the right analog stick? Unless you play mostly FPS, you'd say the face buttons.

Having the left stick in the upper position, and the right stick in the lower position, does make the most sense, given what you will use most of the time.

The DualShock was just an extension of the original PlayStation controller. What could've been described as a Super NES controller with handles, it didn't originally have the analog sticks. Only later were the sticks added in the DualAnalog controller (and rumble would be added even later with the DualShock). But they weren't intended to replace the digital controls... yet (and a lot of older PS1 games couldn't use the analog input, anyways).

But now? You likely use the left analog stick more often. It's just that Sony has not evolved their controller design since 1997! This controller design is almost 13 years old! And when they tried to change it, people whined so they reverted back to the DualShock before we could even TRY the new design.

The D-pad/Analog Stick switch is probably the best feature for this controller.

I mean more than a decade in people are probably used to the Dual Shock's set up, but I honesty still can't stand it. My hand cramps up if I play for more than an hour.

Like Granger said, the best controllers I've used have been the Gamecube, 360, and Dreamcast pad. It just feels more natural.

But alot use buttons.

foetoid, seriously? i thought the gamecube controller was extremely awkward to hold. and the N64 controller was god awful. IMO, the 360 controller is really comfortable and the PS3 controller is decent enough, but definitely has room for improvement.

To argue my point:

The MAIN input devices we use on the face of the control pad are;
for the right hand - the 4 buttons.
for the left hand - the thumb stick (for movement in a 3d space, not the d-pad which is better for 2d movement)

Therefore those controllers should occupy the main positions on the face
of the pad. That is, the outer, higher positions. The other devices (the right thumb stick and d-pad) should occupy the secondary positions (lower down and nearer to the middle).

Being symmetrical looks nice but, doesn't equate to a better controller.

And I'm gona be THAT GUY again and shout about my qualifications.

I'm both a qualified product designer AND a qualified ergonomist. so yes, I do know what I'm talking about.
