Given the years of back and forth we've seen over the possibility of an updated Syndicate for current-gen consoles, we're looking at the handful of recently discovered copyright documents -- that seemingly reveal a collaboration between Starbreeze Studios and EA -- with a fair amount of skepticism. Internet supersleuth Supererogatory spotted the three filings on the US Copyright Office website (confirmed by Joystiq this morning, though not linkable), each for the title "Syndicate" and one of which is co-filed by EA and Starbreeze.
Back in 2008, the two companies officially announced that they were working together on revisiting one of EA's "most acclaimed classic franchises," dubbing the collaboration "Project RedLime" (and leaving us to speculate on what that classic franchise might be). We've reached out to both EA and Starbreeze for comment on the filings and will let you know if we hear anything back.
(What next, an XCom revival? Oh.)

Syndicate is a game that looked cool but I never played as a kid. I went back and tried it out last year, and couldn't get into it because it was too dated. I'd be all about a new one tho.

I find some irony in the fact Syndicate is "too dated" yet your avatar is a celebration of older games.

I loved Syndicate Wars, especially when I cheated in infinite bombs just to flatten every building on the map and leave craters.

Wcarnation, there is certainly an aspect of aging in games that can affect one game more than another. All older games do not age equally. It's much easier to go back and play Zelda than it is Dragon Warrior, for example. I undertand where the irony comes from, though.
It could also be that I was put off by one little thing and was in the middle of other games, so I was less inclined to push through to get into the game. I love isometrics too, and was a huge fan of Shadowrun on SNES... it kind of reminded me of a cross between Shadowrun and Rainbow Six from what I could tell. I should reinstall DosBox and give it another shot.

I disagree. I couldn't get into the Genesis game. The SNES game was interesting from the start. I'll havw to give the Gwnesis one another try, because you're the second person to say that. But I loved the SNES game, and the bit of time that I had with the Genesis game just completely turned me off to it.

This better be an action RTS, if it is a strait shooter. I will cry.

We've got an Ultima RTS and an X-Com FPS now, so I am assuming Syndicate will be some sort of flight simulator.

It's probably going to be a fps, considering Starbreeze is the developer, after all.

You know, since I didn't play the original in its prime, I can't share the same nervousness... A shooter in the Syndicate universe could be really cool... However, I do understand where you're coming from, since that's exactly what they did with Shadowrun, and I almost killed over that travesty. A true current-gen Shadowrun game could have been so cool.

unfortunately Biggie, it'd work really well as a fps considering the all the squad-based, direct your team-style games out now which Syndicate is at its core.
If they went that route it'd cut out a cool core part of the game, the top down view of the original was the perspective of the execs floating in a blimp, directing their syndicate team.

gawd i hope they don't make it an FPS the market is already oversaturated with them already... i'd much prefer an Action/RTS as that's what made me love the original, the one on Sega Genesis was the better of the 2 console versions, unfortunately i never got to play the PC Syndicate Wars, i somehow missed that one and by time i learned of it it was too late...

I remember playing the sequel on the PS2 with my friends. It was an awesome game and this news excites me but also gives me reason to worry as i hate for them to turn it into a generic shooter.

Man, I hope they include a copy of the old game. So much fun.

Maybe they will release the original on XBLA or PSN before the new one comes out like Pachter said EA was talking about doing (ala Battlefield 1942 & BFBC2)...
