Have you ever wondered what Project Natal actually sees through its beady, robotic eyes? A direct feed of the Natal's point-of-view was recently revealed to the audience of Microsoft Israel R&D's "Think Next" convention yesterday afternoon. Just past the jump, you can check out NextGen-News' video of a live demonstration from Microsoft VP of Hardware and Technology Dr. Ilan Spillinger and a female participant, both of whose genders and movements were successfully identified and Avatar-ified by Natal.
Watch the video after the jump to see Spillinger get more excited by this technology than anyone has ever been excited for anything else on the planet, ever.

Second mention of Israel today. Didn't know Israel had any video-game development going.

The tech behind Natal was invented in Israel. MS bought the technology and tagged it under its name. It's a little bit surprising Israel isn't mentioned more in such regard, unlike european developers like Remedy or Dice are mentioned in accordance with their products.
Lots of tech comes from Israel, like the Intel Duo Core, and of course - the desert eagle:)

Only hardware technology (camera with IR depth sensor) is from that firm - PrimeSense .
After buying hardware Microsoft made their own full software = libraries, skeletal recognition etc.
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-primesense-article
"The fact that the NITE middleware isn't part of Natal demonstrates that some of the really crazy stuff we've seen with it, particularly in how it maintains its multi-point skeletons even when limbs disappear outside of the field of view, is all Microsoft hoodoo.
"Project Natal: the magic is totally Microsoft," says Maizels in admiration. "What they did to the performance, to the robustness of the solution... we have to salute them."
"Being the biggest software company in the world, they did a phenomenal job on the software," adds Berenson. "It's totally their solution." "

There are no major game development studios here although gaming is popular in Israel, game development never took off here... maybe in the future
Although I know there are a considerable amount of Israelis working in game development overseas
On the other hand, Israel is a heaven for high-tech and inventions from technology to medicine and agriculture
Every big company like Microsoft, Google, Yahoo!, IBM, Intel and so on have R&D centers in here
People just aren't aware that a lot of the technology they are using is coming from Israel

FYI - if you click the link, it will try to infect your computer with a false virus reading. It's not an actual virus but could be if you click into the faux error window.

Once again, Chris... not remotely close.
People seem to conveniently forget that this is a 3D infrared camera. The Eye is not a 3d camera. In these demos, the only thing it had to do on is the relative distance between your eyes.

@edge,
how is this:

Not even remotely close ? How do you think Natal is doing gender recognition ? The most sure fire way of recognition would be through facial features surely.. Do you actually think it analyses to see if a person is flat chested ? In which case all 8 year old girls would be identified as boys and there are plenty of "athletic" built females out there.. The problem with looking at body is before the age of puberty girls and boys look pretty similar its only facial differences that differentiates the sexes.
Even then having a camera that can analyse depth makes absolutely no difference when trying to determine sex..
If you want to see something really cool you should check this out:

You know it'll be a riot if you've got any friends or family members who are mistakenly identified as members of the opposite gender by Natal.
Pretty neat tech stuff, though. Still not sure if I'd buy it, but if they can pull this thing off right, it could be really fun to play with.

We already had racist laptops, now we get sexist videogames?
Guys with long hair, uncurvy/too 'curvy' girls etc will have problems.
And I don't include crossdressers because that's stupid. Just dress like your gender, people. At least gender-neutral clothes. No one wanna see your balls hanging below your miniskirt.
That .5 sec delay seems worrying... We're gonna get pwned by enemies who've got no strings, so they have fun because they're not tied up to anyone. (If you don't get this, go watch Gamer)
These face/body recognition systems suck.

@Shiaoran
While I agree that I don't want to see anyone's balls hanging out of a miniskirt, I defy you to meet and befriend anyone with gender identity disorder and still be able to say "Just dress like your gender, people." It's incredibly offensive, as GID is a completely legitimate condition that causes an insane amount of emotional pain. Trust me on this one.
