NPD: Nintendo DSi XL outsold PSP in March 2010

Michael Pachter described the March launch of Nintendo's latest handheld, the Nintendo DSi XL, "solid." Considering it outsold both the PSP and PSP Go combined, we're inclined to agree.

According to NPD figures (via Gamasutra), the DSi XL sold 141,000 units in March, besting PSP's combined 120,000. Even more impressive is that this figure only accounts for four days of sales; the DSi XL was released on March 28th. The tremendous success of the equally tremendous device confirms that there truly is "room to grow" for the DS market.

not a surprise, specially with pokemon soulsiver and heartgold.

Initial launch sales =/= not indicative of successful product. Time will tell if this is another Micro.

i suppose, specially with the 3DS announced, DSi XL wouldn't sell much.

Completely agree. That thing was the shit. It was easy to carry around and had one of the brightest screens i've seen on a handheld device.

I love the Micro too, but there's no denying it was a flop sales-wise.

Yeah you gotta point there. The XL though . . . i just don't see the appeal of it unless you don't already have a DSi.

Actually, the Micro did a lot better than the PSPGo is doing. We need to start updating our flame war weaponry.

It's really sad, but then again, there is certainly more value in a DS of any sort with a massive library of awesome games than a PSP with a handful of them.

i kinda agree, specifically for the large number of adventure/puzzle games for DS like ace attorney and such. well, in my opinion, of course.

Both handhelds cater to different audiences. You might also want to refresh your dictionary on the definition of obsolete.

I've barely scratched the surface of the DS myself. It excels in games you can play forever, too.

I've yet to pick up my XL. I've been too busy playing the games on my PSP backlog.
Not to mention I still have dozens of games for PS3/Wii/DS/PS2/GCN/Xbox that I haven't even touched.

I fail to see what the big deal here, is.

if a new PSP with a decent launch library, dual analogs and a reasonable price is announced, i'm pretty sure it will be a tough competition for nintendo.

why would microsoft enter a new market now?

they are in one of the best spots they have ever been in, they have an extremely successful OS, an amazing console and a seemingly good attachment releasing later this year for it, and they seem to be making massive strides with their mobile phone platform (XNA? yea, that's some pretty solid gaming).

they are in a great spot right now, why blow billions on R&D for a device that will never reach the sales of the DS.

why? software is not superb all he time, but overall nds collection is worth it. I love my psp, i play a lot of psone, and emulators.. but that,s it...because there is no good games on psp. You can count the good games on One hand.. sad.

I'm sure the PSP2 will at least be more of a match for the next DS. They got a nice chunk of marketshare this generation, and unlike past competitors, they're actually lasting the whole generation.

If the PSP2 can launch for $200 or less, it'll be a big slap fight, I'd guess. Especially since at this rate, the next Nintendo handheld will cost $200+.

The numbers are a little deceiving. I am not trying to take away from Nintendo (congratulations on a good launch) but this short article compares apples to oranges. You are comparing sales of a product that just hit the market (when sales will be the highest for it) to a veteran product. Sure, the PSP Go is only 6-7 months old but it is no longer a new product and the reference here is not a good one.

Apparently the PSP Go didn't get the memo of the new product outselling the old one.

I know that was meant for me but it still wouldn't make sense since I used a full stop.

But let me clarify my post: I think that the DS is a great (awesome!) handheld. The DSi XL? Not so much. People want to upgrade to a XL because it's bigger, where do these sheep come from...

I'm going to be angry if Nintendo doesn't release the 3ds stateside because sales are too good for other versions.

I don't see why Nintendo wouldn't.

It would make no sense whatsoever for Nintendo to not release it here.

That line of logic makes absolutely no sense. Why wouldn't nintendo release the 3DS here and miss out on all the money they would make?
