What is Project Natal's "River Rush" game, you ask? Well, it sounds an awful lot like Wii Sports Resort's canoe-paddling game, albeit minus the whole "physical controller" thing. Hollywood writer James Gunn (Dawn of the Dead, Slither) got to demo the game at a media preview held by Microsoft recently in Los Angeles, where the company was showing off its latest consumer offerings -- from Project Natal to the Courier to Halo: Reach (Gunn says he "was slaughtered instantly and numerous times by the Microsoft employees playing when they're supposed to be working" of Reach) -- and couldn't help but share his feelings about the experience with the world via his blog.
Gunn describes River Rush as "a game where you stand side by side in a river raft, so it's two people playing at once ... to move right, you have to step right; to move left, you have to step left." The game also features a jumping mechanic that, as you might guess, involves players actually leaping into the air. "As you rush down right rapids, you have to jump up and slap floating stars in the air -- the whole raft jumps up every time you do." You'll forgive our reticence, but it only takes one life lesson to learn that jumping into the air blindly near friends and expensive technology almost always results in bad memories. We've asked Microsoft for more information, but the chances of that before the company's E3 press event are about as likely as us going upstream without a paddle.
[Thanks, Jonathan Dixon]

It sounds like another simplistic piece of shit motion game, cashing in on Wii's gimmicky motion control phenomenon.

Will be interesting to see how this plays in person..... I think an actual "realistic" rafting game would be fun. Send a camera down some of the biggest white water places around the world and make it as realistic as possible. That would be a very cool game imo.
Not so sure about the jumping stuff.

Wow great. A lot like Antigrav for the PS2 Eyetoy. Hopefully Natal suddenly takes a turn for the awesome. So far nothing has impressed me. At all.

Ha! I just posted referencing Antigrav for Eyetoy as well. While you had to jump that was kept to a minimum, but the mechanics were good in that you didn't have to step to the sides to turn.
If anyone out there wants to try how Natal will work grab an Eyetoy and a copy of Antigrav for less than $10 and you will get a pretty accurate idea. Maybe that way we can convince Harmonix to do a follow up to that game for the PSEye.

If you actually read the article, it seems that Natal manages to confuse gender.. It may just be an early build, but its gender recognition sounds like it needs some work.. James Gunn has to be 1 twisted guy read the clip below, it made me laugh..
"Dave’s avatar was a girl during River Rush, probably because Dave feels like a little princess inside, and I suddenly realized how awesome it would be for my avatar to molest Dave’s. As my avatar rubbed its crotch against Dave’s avatar’s ass the Microsoft folks started laughing and said that was the first time they had seen anyone do that. I was extremely proud of myself. I’m sure millions of little assholes will follow in the wake of my avatar-...ing, but I want it to be noted in my Wikipedia page that I was the very first.
Whether I’m historically acknowledged or not, the Natal was an amazing piece of technology and I’ll be the first one in line to buy one when they come out during the holidays. Bayman told me there were boxing and football and other Natal games coming out, but I really, really can’t wait to shoot someone on that ...ing thing."

I wonder how long before someone does their girlfriend in front of Natal to see the resultant output on screen ..

I think you confuse River Rush game ability for playing with chosen manualy avatar.
Dave likes to play as a girl.
Yau know that more than 90% "girls" in WoW and other MMORPG are guys don't you?

I read that as him taking the piss out of his mate whose avatar came up as a girl rather than a boy, thats the way it read to me anyway.. His mate also happens to have long hair again possibly another reason why, but you could be completely right and he did in fact ask for his avatar to be made into a girl, I didnt think of that sure you might do something like that at home, but in a product demo ? Not sure about that one..

"you stand side by side in a river raft"
It's a raft, not a kayak/canoe. Seems unsafe to stand while going down rapids, if you ask me.

I would just like to say that Courier was not at that conference. I had a friend that went there, and she said that it wasn't there.

That's too bad. The touch screen device he was talking about must have been the HP Slate or another Windows 7 device. Bummer.

i wonder if the natal skd will be released for indie game developers. we saw some pretty cool stuff there with avatars, controller vibration (ok, the massage games were a little ridiculous) and even the peripheral control (the music games) were nice to see. the non game games like emuze were pretty cool too, i must say, eventhough indie games doesnt exactly have many good "games" its a very cool tech showcase of what people do.
if they release the natal body and voice recognition, oh man. and if the voice recognition is as good as end war. im sure some crazy guy out there would like to take all of the reader's comments and ideas and put them into a nice indie game.
hell with the amount of ideas joystiq gets in comments, they should probably start their own development teams.

Holy Nick arcade batman!!
This sounds like an incredibly bad way to entice non Microsoft console owners to pick up one of their consoles.
Just have actors dressed as the characters from Left 4 dead give people high fives when they buy the system... probably way more effective.
