I think we're all in agreement that Miyamoto is Batshit loco. With that said take anything he says with caution, he's not going anywhere, if he did we'd have a massive drop in insane statements and even with the stuff that comes out of Reggie we'd still be lacking a suitable dose of WTF.

I do wonder if Nintendo would actually retire him, or if they have a mandatory retirement age.

A little insight into Japanese employment law would be useful.

I have it under good authority they produced a clone of him 10 years ago. His 10 year old clone will be all graduated and ready to take his place in 15 years.

He mentioned movie directors; Miyazaki's nearly 70 and hasn't retired yet, still working in Japan.

Even if Nintendo happen to have a retirement age as corporate policy (if he still wanted to work for them, I assume they'd change it, but), Miyamoto could always freelance for them.

In other words he doesn't have to go anywhere if he doesn't want to.

Nintendo has been around for a 120 years. They have taken all kinds of ventures as a company. For gamers when Miyamoto says farewell it will be a very sad day but the spirit of Nintendo will carry on in full force still.

New ideas for games and styles will be made past Miyamoto and he will be proud to see that.

Miyamoto is the driving force behind Nintendo. They wouldnt let him go even if he died. They'd hook his brain up to a machine and keep it alive for another 100 years. You know like they wanted to do with Walt Disney's frozen head.

Is Will Wright really retired? I thought he was on a multi-year sabattical.

@Mr Khan, Japan's national pension system kicks in at age 60, so that's typically the de-facto retirement age. For comparison, in the US, full social security benefits don't kick in until you're 65.

I thought I would point out the following (excerpt from Wikipedia entry on ellipsis):

The way the ellipsis is supposed to be written in the US is ". . ." with a space between each period, per new Modern Language Association (MLA) standards.

"First we need to see just what the heck it does before we can start talking appreciation!"

Really? I thought Iwata made it pretty clear at the press conference last year. You put your finger in it, and it tracks your heartbeat.

How can this be applied to actual gaming, though? Well, one idea I thought up pretty quick after it's unveiling was a way it could be implemented with Left 4 Dead's AI Director system. The vitality sensor could send your heartbeat reading to the director, and use that data to determine spawning points for enemies to more effectively frighten the player. The AI Director can already detect mouse twitches to determine how nervous a player is. A vitality sensor-esque device would be the next step forwards.

You can always trick a sensor for the sake of breaking a game. For all the options that become possible with the sensor just as many possible exploits could be found as well. If the game spits out health packs when your heart rate is up then just attach it to something that thumps faster than your heart and enjoy a constant flow of free life.

Heck, People with irregular pulses probably think it's a horrible idea.

@PN04

Yeah, that's one of the major things I've been worried about since they announced this. I'm wondering how (or if) they'll attempt to counter that. They could have some system in place that, at the beginning of a game, will track your regular heartbeat and use that as a base for telling if you actually have your finger in the thing or not.
