Wondering what it feels like to be on the receiving end of the benevolence frequently exhibited by the creators of Penny Arcade? If you're a college student with starry-eyed ambitions to change the video game industry for the better, you might be able to bask in the warm light of their generosity by receiving the fourth annual Penny Arcade Scholarship, a $10,000 academic grant set aside for a special student with a GPA over 3.3 and the aforementioned revolutionary aspirations.
Applications for the scholarship are currently being accepted and must be sent in by May 30, along with two letters of recommendation, an academic transcript, an essay on how you plan to change the industry and your photograph, which will only be seen publicly if you're the winner, as displayed on the scholarship's page. It's not like the Penny Arcade guys are basing their decision on prettiness or anything.

I think we all have that problem; case in point, I think I have 5 ideas as well but lack the talent to do so in concrete form.
That's why you go to college to learn, hence my props to PA for this scholarship.

Given that I graduate college next month and have little time, let me say this.
I will do the exact opposite as Bobby Kotick.
Check please!

They need to have more oppurtunities like this. A lot of jobs in the industry, in terms of development, require at least 3 years of work in the game industry. Makes you wonder where to begin. I guess people should start with a small development position, and work there way up, kind of like what Jade Raymond and Ken Levine did (From what I've seen).
This sounds like a stupid question to ask on a blog, but does anyone know how to get a job as a writer involved with game development? As in writing scripts. My apologies, I know this is off-topic.

If that is a career path you are really looking to go down, I'd say start off by honing your writing ability, and building a portfolio of work (just like an artist). Assuming that studios will be hiring dedicated script writers in the future (compared to the current practice of letting game design dictate story instead of the other way around), you'd also probably need a degree in a related field (creative writing for instance). We're talking years of school for a degree that doesn't qualify you to do much more than write (which is a difficult field to break into, whether it's game writing, film script writing, or TV writing).
The source for this information is myself. I looked into video game careers when I was still in high school (which is three years removed now) and came to the conclusion that it might be easier to get a business degree and then break into the video game industry that way. My logic is that even if I can't get a job in the industry, the degree would still qualify me to do other things. It's worth noting here that all of the in-state video game courses (at respectable universities) required Trig, Calc, and advanced physics. They definitely aren't designed to churn out artists (3D modelers, texture artists, etc which is what I wanted to do) that actually have the skills to land a job in the industry after graduation (in my experience, they're designed to churn out programmers, not artists). Your state may be different (or you could pay out of state tuition...ouch) but if you really want to go that route, you could try to get into one of the more selective media schools. Again though, it's years of your life wasted if you can't eventually get a job.
It's definitely not an easy field to break into, and it's not even a fully defined field at this point. I believe that writing will be taken more seriously by studios in the future, but it would be hard for me to say it's a good idea to spend two to four years of your life in hopes that it will. It's a big commitment.

I'll be finishing up that novel I've been writing if you guys need me. The tentative title is "Faster than the speed of love". I think it's going to be a really special novel when it's done.

Maybe if you say that you'll continue the game they freaking started; you'll get the grant.
Seriously, finish the damned game series already! You're excuse left the studio a few weeks ago.

Cause I'm bored:
-An action-RPG that takes inspiration from different styles of art, music, fashion, and pop culture.
-An action/adventure that takes place in a steampunk future and cover the quest of a man's redemption and vengeance.
-A 3PS/RPG that spans a vast galaxy
-A survival horror taking place in an American mountain town
-A Zelda-Final Fantasy inspired game
And others. And yes, I'm totally serious on these ideas.

Either a wild west zombie apocalypse or Gears of War/Mass Effect style game where you play as the skeletal remains of a long dead American WW2 GI in modern day france, searching for vengeance against the Nazi sorcerer who killed you.

You know what would be awesome? Scholarships to pay for bodyguards, to protect kids who are not ready to make a life defining study choice from their puppetmaster parents. "My dad's gonna kill me" is less horseshit than the essays kids normally write for scholarships.

GTA in first person would be cool. I have tons of ideas for video games but I know that they would fail commercially because they don't really have a wide appeal.

@Grey It blew my mind too. What can i say, i played a lot of wolfenstein back in the day. If it were to lean more towards mass effect you would also be accompanied by a party of characters not out of place in an issue of hellboy

Two ways you can alleviate some of this stress is to make sure you know when to take your college entrance exams, and that you are clear about your chosen school’s admission timetable. As long as students stay organized, understand the college admission process and know the policies of each school they are applying to, finding and starting a university or college can actually be fun!
