The tie-up with Renault is part of the "Electric Vehicle Pack," a free Sims 3 download to be offered in EMEA countries, comprising the car and other environmentally conscious items like solar panels and windmills. Despite the fact that all cars are electric in the game (because they're inside your computer, which is electric), driving the tiny Renault and using the other items will noticeably improve your Sims' lives -- by reducing their weekly bills.

And where does said electricity come from, hmm? Unless you're using nuclear, there's no environmental benefit from driving electric in the first place. And solar panels take more energy to produce than they will give in their lifetime, typically.
More and more I'm convinced that the "green" movement is to make people feel good about themselves, while giving up all the technological advancements we've made to this point.

While I agree with the general sentiment that most peoples choice to be "green" is simply an ego boost, electric cars run off of electricity pulled from the general electric grid, which even if produced largely with coal is still cleaner and more efficient than gasoline powered engines. Additionally, many people have renewable energy sources such as wind, hydroelectric, solar, nuclear that provide a portion of the power to the grid. Emissions can also be addressed and controlled in one environment with grid power.

You're right in that even our coal plants have gotten to the point that their is little environmental impact from them. I find it strange, however, that they are still demonized in many of the "green" circles.
As far as gasoline-powered vehicles, you gain performance and range while giving up efficiency, and vice-versa for electric. And while any environmental concerns may not exist during the lifetime of the vehicle, the battery disposal for those vehicles is going to be a huge issue.
I personally think we're going to have to pursue all sorts of energy. Nuclear, wind, solar, and - gasp! - petroleum.
