So like, their mission is to take the fun out of Brawl? Cool.

the goal is to ADD fun, by keeping losers from spamming the same moves over and over and over and over and over.
this way, everyone has a chance to win.

Ah, don't worry charlie b. Hace probbably mains Metaknight and Snake, and finds he can only enjoy games through the constant, merciless beatdown of his friends with unbalanced characters.

And ONLY plays on Final Destination.

Even though they look quite alike, Brawl isn't nearly as good as Melee.

I'd say they're on par though I had more fun playing Melee. Most of that is probably because it was still so new back then.

Melee does not have Snake.

Therefore, Brawl > Melee

Don't get me wrong, Brawl was a good and fun game, and I like that they at least tried to make a better single player campaign and online mode. But to me it just didn't feel the same, and is therefore not that good. I felt Melee was better balanced, and had the core mechanics better.
Brawl was too much about Super Duper Mega Flashy moves, the final smash moves were pretty and flashy, but it ruined some of the game for me.
But that is my opinion.

Brawl and Melee never stuck with me. It went from being a fun brawler to an ADHD'ers dream. Everything was spastic and crazy to the point of not being able to focus.

It's funny...every time I see this debate, it just reminds me that I prefer the original N64 version over either Brawl or Melee. Not sure why, but I definitely had the most fun on the 64 version.

so is this Brawl+ or is this something else? if it is something else that will be interesting segmentation of the player base

I still get a kick out of the fandom in their sheer disappointment in brawl that they actually go and fix the game to be competitive.

it is really too bad as melee was basically my college years. but it is apparently player and creator disparity. people made a game something that the creator doesn't like. he changes to be what he wanted a party game and the player base attempt to change it back to a competitive fighter.

If you saw what they had to do to make Melee a competitive fighter, this sort of revisionist activity has been going on for a while. Now it's just a helluva lot easier to hack, so that they can just remove items entirely and not have to make a rule about it

@GrandpaMasaki:

Thank you for mentioning that, I hated melee for the fact most of the characters where useless and everybody picked the same characters...

I guess because the game made the jump from the original 12 characters to a sudden overhaul of 25 (I believe) characters and guess they weren't too careful when balancing all the characters to be competitive in any match to any given character but I believe they did a pretty good job with all the characters they added to say the least. I love all Smash Bros. Games but Melee is my least favorite of the three.

In Brawl, I can actually use Bowser & Peach which were extremely useless compared to the Star Fox characters (which were so over-used) in Melee.

Call me crazy, but I don't think balance has ever been the intention of Smash Bros, even back to its N64 days.

It's always seemed like the idea was to have intentionally uneven abilities, with the heart of it being to pick your favorite guy and start using their powers. Not every character created equal.

I mean, that isn't very much far away from the Street Fighter philosophy either, and I think you'd be the crazy one to say SF isn't the most monumental fighting game.

Exactly, Brawl simply was never intended to be made and played Competitively.
And they are making the game into something that its not supposed to be.

Brawl is not a competitive game. But the fans refuse to face that fact and prefer to shape it into a game that its clearly not so that continue to think they are pros at a party game.

I don't think it's intentionally unbalanced, but they certainly didn't spend more than 20 minutes balancing it. They got to a point where they said, "This is fun" and then they didn't want to go beyond it. I'm not saying this is good or bad, just how I kind of think of it.

There's nothing about balanced that means all characters have to be the same. If you read the BBrawl patchnotes you'll notice that the flavors of the characters are all kept intact (in some cases enhanced). Melee, for example, was quite balanced with a selection of characters that could be played at the top level.

Anyways, even for a party game you don't want one jerk friend to play a god like character and win all the time. Balance is still important.

Being equal, being balanced, and having all the same abilities are three different things you are confusing.

You are saying that characters shouldn't have all the same abilities, everyone (including BBrawl people) agree.

You are saying that characters shouldn't all be equal. That usually means each character has a 50/50 matchup against everyone else. That's also largely true, it's ok for matches to be a little favored to one side or the other. It's inevitable anyways.

That has nothing to do with being balanced. Being balanced means that each character has at least a fighting chance against every other character. In standard Brawl Metaknight is usually favored as a 60% or 70% winner over every other character. That makes him way too good, he always has an upper hand. They don't want to ruin his flavor or make him 'equal'. All the want to do is give the other characters a good fighting chance against him.

The pie-in-the-sky goal is simply to have every character be fun to play AND a viable choice. So that everyone, even competitive players, can pick any character and have a shot at winning. If you read the patch notes you'd know that the characters have very minor changes that don't affect how fun they are to play. For example read Metaknights change list and see how little it changes his playstyle.

They're taking the game to make it what they want. It shouldn't matter what the developer intention is, there's nothing wrong with that (legally, well, there probably is). If they enjoy the concept behind the fighting mechanics, but want more balanced (or what they consider balanced, honestly I have a hard time accepting that anyone other than actual professional gamers would understand the balance deeply enough) then I say let them make it. I'm not going to look down on them for wanting to make their own fun. If anything, I respect them for it.

Me, I like it as the character mix-and-match that it is, so I'm not interested. But there aren't really any games that operate like Brawl, so they don't have many options but to modify the game themselves. Or make their own game, but that removes the fun of the Nintendo characters.

But it will probably never take off to the level that Street Fighter, Starcraft, and Counter Strike did in professional gaming, because, like you guys said, it's not meant to be that. It's much easier if the game is built for high level competition, instead of having to force it.

You if nintendo doesn't take steps to fix their games then they should just let this slide to please the fans. That would be like me getting new tires on my car and Chevy coming to my house and saying "nope, we're not gonna allow this."

Come on 'Tendo, just let 'em have fun with it.

It's aimed at the competitive crowd (aka no items), but it doesn't force you to play that way. You can enable all the items and still have the same level of fun you always do. The difference is that you get some of the nice balance features. No more 4th player stalling on the ledge for the entire match, tripping or someone constantly destroying everyone with Metaknight.

It's competitively aimed, but there's still fun in it for everyone.

@Barry

As a counterpoint to that, they've introduced an ability to Jigglypuff that lets her use a taunt to create one of a few select (ie. not overly powerful) item from thin air.

Basically, they've INCREASED the possible item use in the game.

I've been playing this for a while now, and it's actually pretty invisible once you get playing. You do discover, though, is that characters you played as before are just awesome in a very sensible way.

Play Ganon or Falcon with this and you'll see. Falcon is now EXTREMELY fun to play as without making it feel like an easy win.
