I really enjoy Brawls single player its a huge improvement for the game I rarely played the multilayer so I never really noticed the balance issues. Brawl is definitely my favorite since the original.

If this uses the same Stage Builder exploit that I think it does, then it's borderline impossible for a firmware update to fix it. It runs straight off of the SD card and thus doesn't need to go through the system menu like the Twilight Hack did. It's all in the Brawl disc's code and your SD card. The only way for Nintendo to go about blocking it would be a mandatory patch, which I don't think they've done yet.

So basically this'll be around for a while.

I never understood the move to make Smash Bros competitive. Really makes the experience joyless to me, but i'm the kind of person that likes a fast-paced game where you barely have time to play before some item or other comes on scene and wreaks total havoc

Personally i'm rather opposed to it, though this level of dedication is admirable.

Did you check out the site or videos? The way these guys did it is great; the characters still act just like you'd expect them to and all the stages and items are available. This doesn't just make the game more competitive, but personally I think it makes it a lot more fun! I can finally play as Captain Falcon against my friends, or even... dare I say it... Pokemon Trainer!

I haven't tried it yet, but I really have to get this on my Wii and show my friends!

It's possible for the game to be balanced and still have all the random elements to it. As long as there are no exploitable moves, skill will be the largest factor in winning the game. I also have no patience for people who complain about random elements though. It's a game! It's supposed to be about having fun, not proving who's best.

Shame someone couldn't have spent their time fixing the netcode so it actually worked.

I think the thing that makes Brawl fun IS the unbalanced characters. I complain all the time when my friends fight with Pikachu and Sonic, but I still have fun trying to beat them even though I think those characters have much stronger movesets than my beloved Lucario.

That's actually probably the best mindset to have. I mean, I doubt you really want to be hardcore competitive, but it's that mindset that allows people to learn how to be better beyond just mastering an already established technique.

Plus, you enjoy your game more! That's really the best thing.

If I recall... Sonic is actually a pretty weak character in tourneys. I went to one once on a lark, it was interesting, and I got creamed.

I've read a great deal about the mod and played it a fair amount, but what it boils down to is that they didn't really re-balance the characters by giving them more equality in attacks strength, speed or range.

Instead, they take the differences in the characters and embrace them to be even MORE exaggerated, so that each character is equal in how extreme they are.

Sheik, a master at combos, now links attacks more easily than ever to make up for a lack of power, while Zelda is just as slow but brings the power. To make both usable, they sped up the transformation so you can actually play both easily, instead of one or the other.

Ganon is slow, cumbersome and frustrating to play as, but his power - as before - is now immense, and his domination game from before is taken to new heights.

Mario, the ultimate balance character, has been rounded out so that his lack of specific strengths is now a boon rather than a burden.

Captain Falcon retains raw power and speed, but he was always about his ridiculous specials. Before, they were unrewarding and difficult to use, leaving him with the Knee and Stomp. Now his special attacks chain together beautifully, allowing you to use them proudly, just the way you'd expected to.

Link hits harder, Luigi's dash attack is still comical but now works perfectly, Peach is more effective in the air than ever, and the entire Star Fox team now has a workaround to make up for irritating stage-lip deaths.

They also made Sonic even more annoying than ever. He's all about annoyance, they just embraced a tiny bit more to bring up his level of play.

Not so much about making the characters play with similar strengths . . . more about enhancing their unique qualities to equal levels.

Were it now for that fancy title screen, you may have a hard time noticing you're even playing the mod.

Seriously!?

After months and months (I think at least 9 months) of testing and tweaking, Smashboards has finally finished their tweaks.

The team was of at least 40 professional tournament players and about 10 coders (myself included).

I might be out of line but this "Balanced Brawl" is an insult to the hours of work we've done. There's no way they didn't take what the BrawlPlus team did.

BrawlPlus. Get it here. http://brawlplus.net/

7.0.2 is Gold and the code is locked for 6 months for tournament play.

An 'insult'? Did you even read their patch notes, there's very little overlap between the two. You most definitely are out of line.

What, like these guys didn't have to work to make this? It just magically showed up on their hard drives?

Besides, I think they're doing different things. From what I can see, Brawl Plus changes a lot of the ways characters move (height jump and physics and such) and Balanced Brawl doesn't.

Personally, I'm more interested in Balanced Brawl right now. I really need to find my SD card reader...

Since this exploits a bug in the way the stage builder parses data on the SD card, i.e. in the code in the game ROM itself, it would be inordinately difficult for Nintendo to fix this. Also, the basis for this exploit has existed for almost a year now in the homebrew scene, so I don't anticipate Nintendo suddenly deciding to fix it just because people are modifying Brawl (which itself has been possible for some time as well).

>professional tournament players

ahahahahahaahha.

All 'competitive smash players' desperately want Super Smash Bros. to be a competitive fighting game like Street Fighter, but of course this will never happen, since the game is completely geared towards casuals. In fact, most self-imposed 'competitive smash players' rules are aimed towards making the game more like Street Fighter anyway. So why don't they just play Street Fighter? The answer is simple: they're idiots who are too obsessed with Nintendo's intellectual property to play a legitimate fighter.

I somewhat disapprove of how it is implied that the BBrawl developers had some part in developing Smash Stack (the device used to load Brawl hacks through the stage creator), when it was created by a person completely uninvolved in the project. For those curious - I see no reason why people would be unable to load Brawl+ from the same mechanism using a very simple file swap.

Also no word of Brawl+ makes me sad, although that is because I had an active role in the development of it. BBrawl has (throughout its existence) had a tendency to neglect to credit some of the people who made the codes it operates on (myself included).

Alas, that's not the point. I hear a lot of good things about the gameplay itself, and it's interesting to see it get some larger attention.

With all the talk of balanced/unbalanced, I couldn't help but contemplate a balance board based balancing system. The more unbalanced you are the more unbalanced the game play is against you. YogaBrawl!

I'm a super casual player, but I read through this list and I think every change they made can only make the game more fun.

The only things they seem to have nerfed are chaingrabs and infinite combos. (And meta knight.) Everyone else got fun buffs.

Zelda's neutral b allowing her to glide around and set up combos? Heck yes?

Samus' projectiles actually do damage now? Alright!

Jigglypuff's side taunt makes items? o.0 I never thought I'd see tournytards create an ability that makes random items!

I saw someone before talking about sonic as if he were powerful, which is amusing because he got buffed. I love the insta kill spike on his up B spring thingy.

If I hadn't sold my wii ages ago, I would have this patch in my system already. Then I'd play for half an hour and wish the netcode wasn't garbage. Then I would go back to halo.

Just tested this out for like 4 hours straight, this shit makes the game so great!
It's like playing Melee again but with new chars and stuff.
I reccomend this to anyone who's competitive at brawl or who just loves less cheapness in there game.

An easier way to play Brawl Balanced is to play Melee instead.

And for all those who say smash can never be a competative fighter, please do your research so you don't look like an idiot.

In fact never mind we don't even want you in our community, go back to your N-Gage and party on.

There's an error in the post near the end
You can't update a firmware, it's engraved in the hardware and cannot be changed. They can change (modify) the Input Output System that Brawl uses but I don't think it will have an effect on wether you can load balanced brawl or not. Anyway, the las time they did an update to remove homebrew, it was so lame that the modders found a way around in hours (and that update did render some perfectly working unmoddded korean wiis useless).
And if you really want to keep balanced brawl well.. don't update :)
