Downloading now. Didn't realize it was free! Had some roommates that played DotA, always looked interesting, but I figured it was too late for me to really get into it.

I have one question and one question only. Is it easy for someone who has not played this kind of game before to get into it, or is it hard like steel?

If you're just starting out, you should probably play League of Legends. I heard the community in HoN is really hardcore and mean whereas LoL's is more friendly.

it's real simple to get into actually all you have to do is communicate good, Teamwork is a must, and DON'T FEED the other team and by that i mean don't keep dying thus giving them money to buy better items early on once you catch how to play and combo your abilities for a devastating combos you will be doing and playing better.

If you have ever played an RTS or Diablo game ever this game should come pretty easily to you. It uses a click-to-move. If not, I'm sure you'll catch on pretty quick. The game is pretty forgiving.
Don't be afraid to jumps straight in with the ranked matches. It's got safeguards to keep you fighting only people within your skill bracket. In practice game you're going to find yourself being pair up with people 30 levels higher than you.

How is this game if you just want to play for free, and not buy anything?

They have a weekly "rotation" of free champions you may use for that week, and once the week is up it switches and new champions are available. You can buy the champions with money or credits (IP) earned by winning games. It took me around 3 days to buy 2 champions, one costing around 600IP and the other one around 1300IP. The expensive ones run around ~6000IP.

Like all them free MMO's, they hope that enough of the populace buys either worthless or worthful add-ons so that they stay afloat and even make some moolah.

Anything that has an effect on game-play can be purchased with an in-game currency acquired through playing matches.
In-game Purchasable items:
Characters are the most expensive for in-game money, but they cycle which characters are free each week so you shouldn't mind. After a week of playing you should have enough to pick up a character that you want.

Runes are permanent buffs that you can buy to tool with your characters and tailor them to your playstyle a bit more. These use in-game are super cheap and anybody playing for free shouldn't have trouble keeping on top of the power curve.

Character skins are alternate costumes for your characters. These are the only thing in game that you cannot purchase with in-game money.

Custom character skins are the only things that require money to get. Everything else can be earned within reasonable time. I haven't spent a cent in the 6+ months I've been playing (but I love the game and Riot enough that I'm going to buy some skins just to support them),

You will not be limited in any way by choosing to not spend cash. It'll just take a little longer to get certain things

Thanks for the replies, guys.

Do you think it's worth it to buy the $20 Retail pack that includes 20 champions and whatnot?

Ok, before the HoN vs. LoL argument pops up, let me try to differentiate between to the two:

LoL - Toon-like graphics that are easy on the eyes, has RPG elements such as a skill tree, "runes" to upgrade your character and uses a Micro-Transaction model for characters & skins. An innovative redesign of DotA with RPG elements.

HoN - Similar graphics to the original game, easy to pick up and play as all characters are available without purchase, has a more complex in-game item store and lots of character variation. A single purchase unlocks the whole game. It's a faithful recreation of DotA.

Riot is very active within their community and shows no signs of slowing its support. Offering the game for free only further cements the fact that they care more about offering a great experience than getting great sales.

That aside, this game is phenomenal. It's the best multiplayer game I've played in the past 4 years. After years of resisting my friends' pleas for me to get into PC gaming, it was LoL that finally sucked me in. I've been addicted since the beta. I can't recommend the game enough.

Some advice: If you're unfamiliar with this type of game, DO NOT jump right into a Normal game or even a Practice game: play through the tutorial THEN go into a few practice games.

Also, make sure to try out a few different champions. Find one that fits you.
I play as StubbyBoardman if anyone wants any help getting into it

LoL is incredibly casual friendly as evidenced by it's watered down DoTA style formula. Can't say I like the f2p model for it, having to level up to get characters unlocked is really lame and they have a lot of other watered down ideas in my opinion.

Really I stand by that HoN is a much superior game for those willing to learn it. If you just want to get in and kill some people without any real care in the world than go to LoL but if you really want what could be considered the "full experience" play HoN.

And I realize this post probably reeks of elitism and bias, I'm trying to be as objective as possible but I really dislike LoL.

IGN's for HoN (since I'm talking about it) are: _`__ and Cyrant.

I agree that your post is pretty darn biased. 8-)

That said as a LoL fan I thought I might shed some alternate viewpoints on the issue.

LoL is a much more accessible game to get into for new players. It avoids counter-intuitive (and IMO silly) mechanics like denying, has a tutorial, and matchmaking which helps avoid the pubstomp problems DotA and HoN lobby system creates. LoL has a great interface and in particular the in-game store stands out as being vastly more usable than the chaotic mess that HoN and DotA have.

HoN has more detailed and realistic graphics while LoL goes for a more stylized and cartoony graphics style which at the moment is personal preference but in a couple years when animations and hardware have improved HoN will start looking dated while LoL will be the same as ever. The spell effects in HoN tend to be much flashier which I find obstructs the ability to see what is happening during teamfights.

HoN heroes tend to have more extreme performance variance while LoL champions are rarely completely useless but also can't fight the entire enemy team by themselves at times. LoL champions have more personality while HoN heroes have a wider variety of non-humanoid models.

The final issue is about pricing. LoL has every champion available from your very first game if you want to spend a little money, otherwise you can them without spending a penny by earning IP from playing games. HoN costs $30 dollars to play whether you play it for a week or 5 years, LoL costs nothing if you don't want to spend or you could spend hundreds of dollars buying every champion with cash (instead of IP earned with time) along with every skin.

I think that LoL is a better game. HoN is a very pretty remake of DotA but frankly other than updated graphics it doesn't bring anything to the table over playing a game that most of us already have. LoL is bringing new champion concepts, new maps, new items, and much more into the genre rather than selling a knockoff of someone elses hard work.

Heroes of Newerth is available on Mac and Linux, that's a huge win in my book. I run Windows but I'm not going to boot into Windows for LoL when I can just stay in OS X and play HoN.

HoN is too random, just like DoTA. LoL locks down all the numbers (dmg, def, and the like) and makes it pure skill.

DotA and HoN are for the hardcore gamers only. If you try to play them and you're a noob, prepare to get flamed harder than a zombie in COD:W@W :/

On a different note, LoL is very noob friendly and is a great game to get people into this genre of gaming. I wouldn't say it's a bad game, but the cartooni-ness of it drives me nuts >.> and the fact that you have to unlock your champions makes for an uneven playing ground for starters.

At the guy above me. DotA and HoN are not random, perhaps you're just used to playing pubs. Join the nadota.com syndicate or go to local LAN's run by milkfat and you'll realize that most games are decided by impecable teamwork and Laning, not randomness

I've played both LoL and HoN. I've dumped about 100 hours into LoL and well....far more into HoN, purely on the fact that I enjoy it more.

I'm not going to get into a spat about which game is better, because it's subjective. However, I find both communities have their pros and cons but do not be afraid to try both and see which fits your overall interest.

I would choose HON over LOL any days, first because LOL is too unpolished. Some heroes are just outright more imbalanced than others.

Second, I live in SEA. And oh-holy-mother-of-LOL, our IPs are banned even before a SEA-dedicated server is up.

HON for now, thanks.

LoL is just a DotA rip-off. Icefrog is responsible for making the mod as great and competitive as it is today. Guinsoo's versions were horribly imbalanced. Pendragon is such a money mongerer that Icefrog had to start a whole new website.

Do your research first before you post a idiotic comment. HoN is DoTa with a different name Riot Games are the original Mod creators of WCIII's Dota.

I've played both LoL and HoN and I can safely say that I would definitely recommend LoL over HoN. HoN focuses more on the graphical side of things (Even though it's fairly difficult to tell the difference between your minions and theirs) LoL focuses on unique hero styles that serve a tangible purpose. Also, it's free. Give LoL a shot, it's a blast.

I have found Riot Games and the LoL community to be the most responsive of any game developer in the biz. That's what their President Marc Merrill was saying in the interview. If people keep asking for a Mac version, I bet anything one will be made.
