Blizzard, in preparation for the launch of StarCraft 2 and the new Battle.net framework, recently banned over 320,000 Diablo 2 and Warcraft 3 players that violated the company's Terms of Use by using hacks and third-party tools. According to a census taken earlier this year, there are currently 317,630 people living in Iceland. Let's take a moment to appreciate the fact that so many people play Blizzard's games, its moderators can ban more people than the entire population of the 175th largest country on the planet.
Folks from all corners of the world -- not just Icelanders -- who were found to be using illicit means of self-improvement while playing the two games had the CD key tied to the cheated game in question revoked for 30 days, while repeat offenders were banned permanently. It's not worth it, our dear readers! Keep it legit!

Damn those old game cheaters, they're the video game equivalent of elderly women with silicon implants.

It's horrible. There are torrents of Arena and Daggerfall on Pirate Bay. Damn pirates.

That's what I mean. It's sad that they have to go to Pirate Bay anyways.

You do know Pirate Bay itself isn't illegal right?

I know, but the fact that Arena and Daggerfall are on a pirate site is just an insult. It may not be illegal to download these from pirate bay, but I'll be damned if someone would trust a torrent more than the download from Bethesda.

Wouldn't that be a bit of bad luck :D First volcano, and then the entire nation banned from Diablo 2 and WOW, what could be worse? Lol

I don't cheat unless I'm bored with a game, and I never hack, that's just childish. The only time I cheated was either on GTA4 when I had beaten the main storyline (isn't it an achievement when you complete a mission without spawning a helicopter, less the whole game?) and when I idled (new update renders idling next to useless) on TF2, which in my view is cheating, even though I didn't use a program. Note: I've had TF2 for maybe 1 1/2 years and I had never gotten a hat other then the Ghastly Gibus and the Cheater's Lament.

On the subject of Starcraft 2. Its amazing. The only thing dissapointing was the fact i didnt think to hit up websites for an offline version against AI opponents so i could test out the new features for myself sooner. Just all the little things made me smile. The fact that protoss buildings dont cast a shadow till they are almost built and the shadow fades in with them. The fact that the voice for the Thor sounds like Arnold Schwarzenegger and even quotes some of his movies. Cramming 6 marines into a bunker is great. Watching the Queen force the Hatchery to spawn 4 additional larva on the spot. How the command center can reinforce any supply depot and double its unit allowance. Hydralisks being an advanced unit now and much tougher. The Ultralisk really being enormous. The rediculously easy way you can expand the creep to cover the entire map with zerg units moving faster on creep. The carrier looking way cooler than before, with the interceptors shooting lasers instead of those little balls of energy. Argh i love it!!

I don't know about other people, but I AM more likely to buy a game if I know that the developer plans to support it for literally a DECADE.
Banning cheaters and hackers in the multiplayer game helps make the game more fun for people that want to play the legit game.

I'm not sure I understand what the problem is with using third party tools in a single player game. Who does it hurt if someone boosts in Diablo 2? It's not like it gives you an advantage in a competitive online match because there aren't any. I guess at the end of the day the terms of service are the terms of service. Break them and you are screwed.

Both Diablo 2 and Warcraft 3 have a pretty healthy multiplayer community (for games as old as they are - and even compared to some 'modern' games).
Diablo 2 is actually pretty well known for people exploiting/hacking/cheating in the multiplayer, especially item dupes.

I only played D2 through in SP once and never played it MP but still remember it to this day.. My favorite moment in that game was where I couldn't get past the big snail looking boss.. so I came up with the strategy of using my blood golem or whatever with Iron Maiden.. I think the boss ended up killing itself in two hits against my golem.. I laughed about that for a bit..

What?
When did the IMF force Iceland to become gold farmers to repay their debt? I live in a council that has lost money in Ice Save, but still, that's pretty harsh man.

Temp bans are not the same as CD Key bans. You got temp banned for something that could, in some circumstances, lag other players out of the game.

I am pretty sure that WoW expansions don't count as new games. SC2 and D3 will never come out as long as WoW keeps rolling in the dough.
