One million Xbox 360s sold down under

Microsoft's Australian site has announced that one million Xbox 360s have been sold in Australia and New Zealand so far. Japan hit that landmark only last year, and about eight million consoles have been sold in North America so far, according to the most recent estimates. Congrats, Aussies and, erm, Newzies!

To celebrate, Microsoft will be auctioning off a few special edition consoles through Konsoles for Kids with awkwardly-painted portraits of Australian celebrities on them, including Russell Crowe, comedy duo Hamish and Andy, and ... Kim Kardashian? We guess they're not all Australian then. What's the deal, Microsoft? Was Andrew Denton too busy? What if we want a console with Yahoo Serious painted on the side?

Its closer to 20 mil, with 34 mil Wiis and 17 mil Ps3s from what i've heard.

Actually a bit of research shows that Ps3 figure of mine is closer to 14mil.

As of March NDP update there are:

32.91 million Wii's in North America
22.84 million 360s in North America
13.66 million PS3s in North America

Hope that clears up any confusion.

Are the Australian figures affected at all by the restrictions on selling mature titles?

it used to be decent but I remember like 15 years ago comedy central went crazy and showed it 8 times a day for a month. and for some reason I felt the need to watch it every time.

So with 26-27 million people between both countries, thats 1 in every 26 people approx. Thats pretty good, even closer to the Wii than i expected. Between both countries i think the Wii is at about 2 mil and according to VG Chartz, the Ps3 has outsold the 360 here. That doesn't sound right... I'll have to look into it.

yea, still far from the 1 in 15 in america, microsoft must really want to pierce that market.

Since we pay $449 for the Elite, which is about USD$420 (over US$100 more then normal US price), its safe to say the market penetration wouldn't be as high. Of course, out price usually includes a free game like Halo ODST, and our price includes all taxes and stuff, but its still pricey. We pay AUS$399 for a Wii too, which is like USD$374. Again its usually bundled with a game or 3 depending on the retailer, but $399 is the retail price listed by Nintendo.

For the record, the 120gb Ps3 is AU$499, with 1 or 2 free games. 250gb is AU$599.

foetoid, you can't just do conversions like that. a lot more goes into pricing of products.

keep in mind this in mind.... minimum wage in america is $7.15/hr. Minimum wage in australia is around $13.50 and maybe like $13 in NZ.

When I lived in OZ I sold strawberries on the streets of brissy and made $25 an hour. Washing dishes in welly netted me $14. and Pretty much any low-level office job in Sydney will pay $20/hr

In america I work as a graphic designer for t shirt company ($14) and a law firm ($22). so yeah your consoles cost a little more, but you also make a little more too.

I didn't realise the average wage in the US was so low. I guess everything is also a little cheaper too. I worked doing nightfill at a local supermarket at $20 an hour, after midnight it was $25 an hour, weekends was even more.

haha yeah that's crazy. I also did preventive burning in south east QLD. that was awesome it paid $30/hr to walk around with a torch and burn up strips of dried up brush, while someone goes behind and puts it out with a hose.

I couldn't own a Kim Kardashian XBox 360. I'd be turning it on and off and on and off, just pushing that button all day long.

But you'd be risking a serious case of red ring each time you touch it. Better off with the crowe one.

After realizing that most of the Xboxes would have a premature death microsoft decided to remove the special edition 360 with Heath Ledger on it.

I would hate to spend $1000+ on an awesome looking Xbox to have it RROD at some point, but holy crap the Halo one is beautiful. I wish they'd mass produce that and sell it retail.

Pretty sure it wouldnt be too hard to get a new 360, remove the nice case, and fit it to the new one if it went RRoD

It looks to me like the case is impossible to remove on the Halo one since a lot of the stuff is actually attached to both the case and the base.

fix it yourself? their are plenty of youtube guides...
