Is this the release of the Mac client or just a Windows UI update?

Please let this be the one for mac, I love my PS3 and have a 360 but I'd much rather play L4D1 & 2 on my mac.

+1 for Mac version release too!
They said it launches in April, and they're starting to get dangerously low on days to make that happen.

@Kevlar: It's launching in *Valve April*. That's probably sometime in Q4 2010 or Q1 2011. See http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Valve_Time for more detailed estimators.

They still haven't even started the private beta yet as far as I know, so Valve time wins again.

As for the UI, I really hope they don't change much from the new Windows one. I'm all for the OS X unity in app design, but if they turn Steam into another iTunes, iPhoto, Numbers, etc design, I'll be disappointed.

It should be pretty soon. Possibly monday when the new client exits beta? The press release/announcement said April, and they're rapidly running out of days in April, so if they stick to their word, within the next week or two.

It certainly wouldn't surprise me for them to drop the mac client at the same time.

A new Steam UI for OSX, so now you can better navigate all the games you can't play on OSX.

I'll be sad to lose that classy Beta button, like that font.

Yes, I am insane.

I'm insane, too, I guess, cause I think that looks nice.

And of course now I have to share this.

Cool. One major change I'm glad about is that it'll finally get rid of the built in IE.

Have not checked the Feedback Forums, but hoping that we can disable the "/1000 hrs" option. I don't want people to know how much time I spend idling in TF2 D:

@Brockobama910, if you can operate a video game, I'm fairly certain anyone/anything can, even an anencephalic baby.

Here's hoping the Mac release will coincide, but this is Valve we're dealing with here... Remind me how much time passed between the announcement and release of some of their other products, like Team Fortress 2.

Maybe it'll coincide with the release of Flash for iPhone.

Looks nice, using it now.. Though i always find it awkward to look at the server list (keep forgetting there's no longer a button on the bottom to go straight there..)..

In game UI is much better :D

Hopefully this comes out for mac on Monday, that would mean I can play against more people! :)

If The Passing was announced for March and delayed to the end of April, it follows that Steam for Mac, which was announced for April, will be delayed to the end of May...

It may still be available in some form in April. They updated their beta page (I don't remember when, only just visited it again a few days ago) saying that they are through accepting applications, and testing will begin in the coming weeks. Mac beta could still hit next week if we're lucky . . . doubtful though.

Steam has achievements? If I didnt hate DD, that's totally how i'd start to get my PC games (Games for Windows - live! is a horrible service, in Halo 2 I kept getting disconnected every 10 mins... which means I played the same 10 mins of that game 10 times in a row. Truely annoying)

Don't associate GFWL with Steam. One is far better than the other.

The only reason not to go the steam route for PC is if you only pirate games. They always have sales on new games at half off or basically free and they sell GFWL enabled games as well on occasion. The expanded community that Steam enables is also great.

The UI beta screwed up my steam install leaving me to re-install EVERYTHING just to get it to reverse back.

I hope this won't happen again when they force it on us.

I really love the beta interface, but this is a mistake. It's not ready for prime time yet. I can't believe Valve is actually rushing something...but Valve is rushing this.

Care to elaborate? I'm not in the beta but would like your thoughts as to why it's rushed....

And as a Mac user, I wish it would come out. I just want to play L4D & L4D2 on my mac anyway....

They still haven't (and probably won't) address a lot of the complaints from users. There's a lot of wasted space in the interface, the ingame overlay is SERIOUSLY cluttered, grid view is (at least for me) basically unusable as the images don't load quickly enough (not that I would use it, but one thing I've been consistently taught in computer classes is not to include broken features), the automatically playing videos in store need to die, that's all I can really think of off-hand at least.

Plus there's a few things that just bother me personally, the placement of the install/play button in details view seems weird - and the grey background behind it just looks bad, the boxes for friends who play this game and achievements in the game panel seem unnecessarily big - Steam is not, for most people I'd imagine - a fullscreen app, support for third party games is still extremely poor (not that it's gotten worse or that has anything to do with the viability of the release, but it's still bothersome).

There's a lot of good things about the new interface, I just don't think it's ready to be out of beta quite yet.

I've been in the beta for over a month now, and I can honestly say I haven't had a problem with a single thing you've mentioned there. I absolutely LOVE the new steam and I can't wait for this to go live. My experience with the beta has been flawless, and I'm assuming many other people's experiences have been the same.

I've been using the beta for a while and its pretty slick. I kinda wished they kept the green theme of it though, steam + green just clicks in my head. Hopefully they release some decent skins.

I also prefer the green/gray. It screams "militaristic totalitarian" and brings back fond memories of the Combine and HL2.
