Look, we have a fairly refined and nuanced stance on how Battlefield: Bad Company 2 should be played: in Rush Mode.
... Yep, that's it. But, we recognize that some people just like to do things incorrectly and, lucky for them, so does developer DICE. Cue: VIP Map Pack 3. The latest free download for all VIP members adds maps to Squad Rush and Squad Deathmatch -- specifically, Laguna Alta will become available in Squad Rush mode and Nelson Bay will become available in Squad Deathmatch.
Planet Battlefield was kind enough to point out the DLC that, as you can see above, is visible in the Battlefield: Bad Company 2 store. We'll let you know when you can download it.
Update: Added clarification of source and removed the "sometime in April" quote, which never originated from DICE. Joystiq apologizes for the confusion and regrets the error.

Na no way Nelson Bay is awesome, I love how it changes the pace of the game. I'm just glad most maps aren't like that... I do however thing Squad DM and Rush is lame though, what they NEED to do is make Rush maps out of Atacama Desert and Panama Canal, that would be epic.

this game takes some actual skill to play unlike MW2. If you can't adjust your playing style to the game and work as a team then you'll end up hating it. But if you want a real challenge and feeling of achieving something with your friends rather than by yourself it's a great game.

"Only get it if you have 2 or 3 friends who also have it"
I disagree.
When I purchased BFBC2 none of my friends had and yet I still really enjoyed it. Sure it sucks if your squad doesn't work together or if you're dumped in a squad with only snipers, but there have been many times where I was placed with a great squad and we all did out part. In fact most of the times that I play, I play with complete strangers yet I usually always have a blast.

To say that MW2 doesn't require any skill is a bit of a reach, Solace.

MW2 may be easily accessible, but saying that it doesn't take any skill is just plain ignorant. but anyways, BC2 can be a great game sometimes. i don't get why people don't like the squad game types but oh well. the only time it ever gets annoying is when both teams are full of snipers and don't get anything done, but that's not too much of a problem.

I think Solace is referring to lightweight marathon knife whores. Or whatever else is the MW2 fad now-a-days for easy kills. Noobtube + heart beat sensor + scavenger? No thanks, I'll drive a tank.

Are the maps really downloaded or are the maps just unlocked like with Map Pack 2?

I would guess they are unlocked, just like you mentioned VIP Map Pack 2 was. Although, with those, I don't remember anything specific happening when they unlocked as so much they were just added to the list of maps on the menu. Maybe that was just me though.

I don't think the maps are changing significantly between modes. Just the spawn locations of the assets that are already in the game.
So, in a sense they are already on the disk, but in the same way there's a jet, a truck, and, a spaceship in a box of LEGO.

Awesome, even though I only play those two game modes when I have 2-3 friends to game with. They aren't as fun to play with random people like the other game modes.

Lame sauce, another Map pack that doesn't really add much. Also, what's with the spacing? We all know they can unlock them at any time. And thes modes are pretty far from the true battlefield experience.

I don't have the game so I guess I can't really comment, but IMO it seems stupid for a developer to slowly release game features that are on the disc. And it's not like EA isn't transparent about it, they call it project 10 dollar, a ploy to kill of the used game business. I personally think it'd work better if they actually released new content, (i.e. maps) instead of new options.

I'm going to be really disappointed if the first batch of new content comes with a price tag. I love free stuff, but I was under the impression that we would be receiving new map packs for free, instead of existing maps being unlocked for different modes.

eh, i agree i guess, i just played an intense game in isla inocentes, damnit man, i never died so much in one game, but i was still able to destroy 3 m-coms and get a k/d of 3.
rush is intense, but you can't abandon conquest, that's the battlefield mode.

I don't know what pubs you're talking about, but there's certainly no lack of communication at my local pub. Especially when there's a football match on.

I feel like conquest in BFBC2 is sort of poor in comparison to previous BF games, while Rush has been improved. In BFBC1, to those who don't know, the defense almost always won. Only when the teams were really unbalanced for the attackers did they ever win. I mean, winning on the attacking side of a 5-base map was very rare, while 3-base maps were somewhat uncommon.
Rush in BFBC2 is much more balanced where attacks are defeated probably 60% of the time.
I personally used to play conquest in BFBC1 probably 80% of the time. Now in BFBC2 I'd guess 55% rush, 15% conquest, 15% squad deathmatch, and 5% in squad rush, which I've only played a handful of times since it was unlocked.
Also, to those who are wondering, all of the VIP maps are probably locked and already on the disc. Nothing so much as a title update is needed to unlock them. So it's a terrible method... which I can overlook because I love this game so much (rank 35, skill level 198-200, 1.92 k/d, 1.75 win/loss, 290 spm)
Last note: I hope they bring back some older maps from the series... Strike at Karkand (BF2), Wake Island, Acta Non Verba (BC1), Ascension conquest (BC1), Oasis conquest (BC1). They'd all be great.

I've been playing a lot of rush simply because I get many more points out of it, since all the players are channeled in one direction.
But conquest is still fun... though it would be funner if it were more like BF2/BF1942 with more ground vehicles, choppers and planes.

Conquest has that shitty horn. Therefore, Rush is better.

I agree, I love conquest. Rush is frustrating because it seems no one else actually wants to get in the dirty areas. However if anyone needs points, just be a medic on Rush and you'll rack em up like nothing. It's too bad about the horn on conquest though, wish they'd do something about that.

'cooler in every way' doesn't really tell us much...
I played MW2 during the steam free trial and lost my desire to buy the game. BFBC2 is epic: destructible buildings, cool physics, tanks, helicopters, quad bikes, squads you can spawn into, target marking, dog tags, plus all the addictive rank based unlocks that MW2 offers.
I hope they continue supporting BC2 with patches and DLC for a long time to come.

ORRRRRR even take the easy path and bring back some of those maps from BF:BC1. The one with the town seperated by that bridge, or the huuuuuge middle eastern one with the large body of water on the side? or the big Russian farm village one. I miss those maps
*ahem, but yes, new maps please
I don't doubt that DICE has them in the works, the just keep dropping little DLC packs like this to tide the players over (while at the same time generating steady revenue for funding continued development of content)

Too bad my FPS after the last patch is not half what it was. 12-25 FPS is not usable with this game. Stabbing people 4-5 times only to have them turn around and one knife you is BS.

Much of the features that BC2 "ripped off" from Modern Warfare originated from Battlefield 2 which was released in 2005. FYI, Modern Warfare 1 was released late 2007, almost three years after Battlefield 2.
Modern setting? Had that in Battlefield 2.
Weapon unlocks? Had that in Battlefield 2.
Level rankings? Had that in Battlefield 2.
Other than the insta-knife and insta-grenade buttons, that's pretty much all BC2 and MW2 have in similarity. The games are completely different creatures. One game recreates a warzone and the other game recreates an airsoft match.

Greatsam, you just pretty much gave a good reason why Bad Company 2 is so much more preferred then MW2 is here;
Cause you little sugar-high-ADD f**kers don't have the attention-span to play a game that takes arguably more skill and thought to perfect. For most people that play Bad Company 2 (from what I know), it's not about getting a high number of kills, but more the satisfaction of GETTING the kill, the way you got the kill, the execution of tactics as a team, etc.
LOLLOLOL I GET 68 KILLS IN A MATCH, I RULEZ ALL U N00BCAKEZZZ!!!!11111!!1!oneone
