Are you guys excited for this Halo: Reach thing? Yeah, we're not that concerned with it, but apparently it's kind of a "big deal" or something -- we guess there's a beta coming on May 3? Psh, whatevs. Anyway, according to a The Seattle Times interview with Bungie's Brian Jarrard and Chris Carney, the developer is anticipating quite the turnout.
"My expectation is it could be upwards of 3 million people. I think that's a fairly conservative estimate," Jarrard said. "Certainly there will never be a console beta of this magnitude." That's a considerable increase from the Halo 3 beta, which managed to snag 820,000 participants during its 26-day run during the summer of 2007.
Sure, the inclusion of jetpacks undoubtedly raised some eyebrows, but we would never have thought the potential for atomic teabags would be that big of a selling point. C'est la vie.

The BETA carbine was the shiiiiit.... pity it got nerfed, coud have really changed the dynamic of how Halo 3 worked, with a one shot rifle being the dominant force in the game.
But the marketers wont have that! Im sure if every other screenshot you seen of Halo featured a big Purple toy gun as opposed to the BR things wouldnt have sold so well.

ODST has sold over 4.5 million units so it makes this prediction most likely true.

Am I the only one that got ODST just for this?

Nope. I bought a cheap copy online and haven't even opened it. Got it for the beta only.
Btw, happy to have been one of those 820,000

Not at all, I'm doing the same. I passed on Halo since the Halo 2 standby glitch fiasco but I think they might take fair play seriously in Reach for some reason. Of course, some loser out there will spend the entire beta trying to get his full auto snipe rifle with unlimited ammo glitch to work. Some people are such a joke.

what I played of ODST was good, still mad that I was playing thru on legendary and the damn thing wasn't autosaving, somehow I was kicked from my profile and it took me back to the menu, started it back up and was 3+ sections back and damn if I was going to spend another 2 hours goin thru that hell again so I quit the story mode....
Still mad Firefight doesn't have match making.
I bought it mostly for the Halo 3 maps as it was only $15 for the game from gamefly

Live is soo crashing on May 3rd.
I was very excited to hear the netcode has been very streamlined. 40% less bandwidth usage than Halo 3, which wasn't exactly a hog itself. Plus a much more advanced networking system in general.

I pray this is all well and true, as no matter what internet service / even moving and changing services (fast, slow, didn't matter) I've always had the same experience on Halo 3, and that was not-very-fun.
I picked up ODST and will be trying the beta for sure.

paying for live, ODST required, jetpacks.
What do those have in common? There the reasons I am not interested.

But it REALLY isn't extreme. If you bought ODST just for the beta you're a moron, and you are so doing it wrong. Wasn't that the line for Crackdown at any rate? It's a great game that is absolutely worth $40 (I don't even regret buying it at $60). The beta is just icing on the cake.

Frugal shoppers can find 12+1month subscriptions for $25-30 without much trouble.
Also, if you're purchasing Live just to play the Reach beta, you're probably the worst kind of tool. It's a great community and excellent service you can use with almost every game published on the 360.
Troll harder next time.

I think you may be stretching it a bit there claiming you can find a 12+1 for $25-30. I've seen a few sales like that, but they're always out of stock when I go to buy one. I mean, I'd love you to prove me wrong and show me where I can find a deal like that right now... but my experience has been that those deals are somewhat rare and only a few ever actually get to cash in on them.

I'm likely to participate but my enthusiasm for it is curbed after the vanilla-fest that was Halo 3 Beta and the eventual full release.

Because people like to live in the world of nostalgia where only Halo 1 is awesome because it was the first game and of course not subjected to the hype that the other Halo games were.

Halo 2 and Halo 3 are night/day when it comes to cheating. Halo 2 you couldn't get past level 30 without seeing some type of mod/glitch. Halo 3 you can play multi-player all the way to level 50 and dump countless hours and never see one modder or person using glitches to their advantage.
