According to a report in the New York Times, Sony will announce today that PS3 users will gain access to live streams of Major League Baseball games. By week's end the console will enable subscriptions to the MLB.TV service, which provides access to out-of-market contests, but not local games or others that are broadcast on TV.
The NYT doesn't have the scoop on pricing, but a web subscription to the service will run you between $100 and $120 annually, or $20 to $25 per month, depending on the features. Count on more details when the official announcement drops. Sony has been considering new subscription services for PSN since the end of last year.
Update: Here's the official release, though it doesn't have much new info. The PS3 app will be free, according to PlayStation Blog, but it requires an MLB.TV subscription to stream games.
[Thanks, Ryan G.]

MLB extra bases is right around there if not more. MLB isn't going to allow Sony to price it lower than their PPV service, driving them out of their own business. If you think about it you are paying less $1 per game granted you are only following one team (+playoffs- national broadcast games). The only reason it $120 at this point is because you have to have a PS3 to take advantage of it.

A dying sport? LOL, until the recession hit, they were setting attendence records on a yearly basis.

As is every major sport that decides its champion with a series and not a single game. Doesn't mean they're dying. Pretty sure you'll die before baseball does, I'm just saying.
Great feature. Definitely adds to the attractiveness of the Playstation 3.

MLB is easily the number 2 sport in the country and it shows your ignorance to say that the NBA is above MLB. When the Lakers vs. Celtics final happen two years ago they were happy because the ratings were great. The series averaged about 14 million viewers. Last year's world series averaged around 20 million viewers. And the Philadelphia Phillies aren't even a team with a large national following. Just because where you live baseball isn't popular doesn't make it so. And look at the NBA ratings when it's the Spurs vs. Cavs and Mavericks vs. Heat from a couple of years ago the ratings were the lowest of all time for the Spurs vs. Cavs and that included Mr. Lebron James the most popular basketball player in the league. So check your facts. No series game for MLB, NBA, or NHL will ever top the super bowl because it's ONE DAY and ONE GAME. Not only that but every other channel does not schedule any programming to go against it. Super bowl Sunday is basically a holiday in the United States and people who have no idea who's playing watches it just to see commercials. And I"m a huge NFL fan but their popularity has a lot to do with gambling. So many people gamble on the games it makes me sick. You listen to sports talk and that's all they care about is the betting line. At least in baseball, basketball, and hockey you actually get people who care about the teams playing and not just making money.

The ratings for last years World Series were the highest they had been in years. I think even last years All Star game's numbers were up.
Before you try this tactic, a greater variety of baseball teams have won the World Series over the past decade than in the NFL.

Speaking of boring, your average NFL game features a total of 11 min of actual action.

Yep very true and I don't see why this would change with a PS3 client (that's all it is at the end of the day, they have a PC/Mac client, iPhone/iPad client and now a PS3 client -- to the same service)

Or maybe you don't want to subscribe to $100 a month cable service just to catch a few games here and there. Seriously, more than half the games are not "locally" televised.

I love baseball but I wish they would allow you to buy one game at a time. I just don't have enough free time to make a $120 investment worthwhile.

I hope its not thru the Browser and its a dedicated app.....hell even a MLB Section in Home would be better than being forced to watch it in the PS3 Browser which has gone to shit over the last year...

Most likely still saddled with the albatross of local blackout restrictions (even for away games). Local blackouts make these services completely useless for the vast majority of fans. Most fans live in the blackout regions (usually the 4-6 states surrounding a team city.

Agreed - I've heard good and bad things about the NHL's Gamecenter product, which is the online version of their Center Ice cable package. Would be great to bring it to PS3 though.
The biggest issue with all these services is no local games - is there anyway around that? Is it a matter of not using a local billing address, or is there some other check they do?
Unfortunately I'm a Devils fan, so I'm a pretty sad panda right now. Ummm, go Hawks?
