Last September, Sega promised to clue the world into its plans for Project Natal and PlayStation Move in early 2010. Actually, back then, we were still calling it the PlayStation Motion Controller. Oh, so young and naive! Now that we and Sega are both a few months older and wiser, the latter's plans have been pushed back a bit -- in a recent interview with IndustryGamers, Sega West president Mike Hayes explained that the company's Natal and Move plans would be revealed at E3 2010.
Though we haven't heard much about Sega's feelings on the upcoming wave of new motion control technology, Hayes explained the company is excited about "the fact that Move and Natal will bring in more of what I'd call the PS2 type of consumer for those platforms, which then suits very much the IP that Sega has." We've hypothesized that the PS2 IP he's referring to is the already motion-infused Sega Super Stars (pictured above) -- in our heart of hearts, though, we're secretly hoping for a motion-controlled Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future.

Yeah, I'm going to take the pessimistic view and say this whole thing will be a failure, that people aren't going to like it or care, and it will all be a waste.

Some of us would call that an optimistic situation. The death of motion controls? Sign me up!
Hopefully "3D" movies will go the same way.

As someone who has two work with all 3 consoles and all related methods of control related to them I gotta say Natal is the most refreshing change of pace from the daily grind. I don't know if I can handle another wand flicker at home but I can definitely fall in love with Minority Report UI navigation from my massive foam beanbag style chair even if it turns out to just be a dashboard novelty (which it certainly isn't *wink wink*)
If I were you guys I'd be more concerned with the nature of 3D gaming, the new costs associated with it and the potential financial impact on consumers who don't even want to opt into this new era just yet. My eyes! Trust me... it's just... trust me.

To be honest Natal concerns me just as much as the others, because of the lose of tactile feeling. Humans are creatures of touch, and the lose of that connection might be a problem. Even controllers provide some form of direct link to the game, even if it is just pushing buttons.

By "PS2 type of consumer" he probably means they will go cheap on the graphics because Wii owners are used to PS2 calibur visuals

If that girl in the background gave you the time of day, you would probably have a heart attack.
At least most folks who go out of their way to say 'she's not hot enough' about attractive women, and like cartoons more than real women, tend to be *fat* or incredibly unmanly.

Oh, I think she's pretty. I wasn't really making a defense of her though, was I?
Maybe I hit the nail on the head for more than one person, though.
Whether I'm a pathetic fat virgin or a happily married man with a family of my own who is frankly too old and too happily married for this kind of exchange (the latter is true), I have a point.
A lot of people think it's interesting to announce that some attractive woman is not attractive, and when I've occasionally met these people, they are amazingly unworthy of their standards. In this case, it's just all the more funny because he's preferring a cartoon girl dressed like a hooker with a body shape that can't even accommodate all the human organs, as the 'good choice' over a pretty girl.
I'm not really being judgey here... I just think that's worth laughing about. Barbie isn't prettier than living women. Some weak minded girls get the idea that they are too fat because of these comments on the internet, but I think they would feel better if they realized that the people with that attitude are compensating.

Why isn't the avatar responding to the same gesture of the girl in the background. The girl has two hands to on side, in a 'I have a gun pointing to the side' move. And the avatar has only one hand stretching outward. And the girl is looking straight ahead, but the avatar to the side...
I think I see a lot of frustration from some games... "Rats, I wanted to shoot to my left, not make a pose!"

He says the PS2 type of consumer, which would be the whole family aka casual gamers, so really I think he means that they have IP for casual gamers. Not that they're bringing a PS2 game to Move/Natal.

i never had fun playing camera based motion cames via playstation eye and eyetoy. Their are going to be a ton of disappointed Natal fans come the fall. I can only see it being useful for effective headtracking, I hope to see convincing head tracking at E3 for both natal and move. Right now im more intrigued by moves accuracy and applications to core genres like fps , platforming, rts etc.
im curious about what games will be developed specifically for natal but i keep imagining eyetoy games and shuddering. i hope the developers prove me wrong, or at least we see highly responsive and convincing head tracking, which keep in mind only works for one person in the room, and for the others itll look messed up.

Eyetoy and Eye have been terrible!
Maybe Natal will be fundamentally superior, but I think it's only a relatively minor improvement.
I also think it bodes poorly for Move. Perhaps it will rock, and certainly a lot of the demos look pretty sweet, but a lot of the Eye demos looked awesome and it's actually totally lame.
It was wise for Sony to see the virtues of the wii and go that route (I know, I know, sony thought of it first bla bla bla). That's just more likely to be fun than a really really sophisticated version of the eyetoy.

wait i really dont understand your point.
i thought mine was clear. playstation eye and eyetoy were lame. because camera based controller free gaming is lame, and thus natal will be lame. I did leave certain possibilities open for it to be redeemed, but clearly stated that because of my past experiences with controller free gaming is that it will likely be a lame and disappointing technology.
How does this bode badly for move? Move is the showing to be the most accurate motion controller in the industry, and unlike natal it provides haptic and tactile feedback. The analogue trigger is also key as it provides a very important measured input which can be used for things like acceleration, squeezing etc.
can you clarify your point a little more, its quite muddled right now. basically just tell me what console you're a fanboy for and then defend its technology the best you can. im going to guess that your a xbox fanboy because of your vague and disingenuous hope for natal but i didnt really understand your argument for natal and exactly what you were talking about. please elaborate.

It bodes badly for move because the hype behind eyetoy and eye was proven to be hilariously dishonest.
Hilariously. And so, when Sony promises an awesome motion control scheme, I think the fact that their last one was nowhere near as good as promised is an ill bode.

I bought into this crap and bought the Eye on day one.
Now, the Move does seem to employ a more realistic and feasible system than Eye alone. And I'm a big old PS3 fanboy, and love much of the quality of their products. But their promo on Eye made it seem like I could easily control and play a lot of interesting games, and that reminds me a lot of the Move promos.
If Natal isn't a total disaster it will represent a pretty amazing accomplishment by MS, but I think they aren't credible at all on anything.

Also, not everyone is a hopeless unreasonable fanboy.
Nothing about what I said was muddled. You just couldn't figure out which team I was on because I'm a little too honest about the problems of my console. I've got hundreds, perhaps thousands, of praise comments for PS3 and I think that's the best value by far. Other than otherOS, I really never have a problem with their work. I do think their promos for the Eye were just flat not truthful.
So when you tell me the Move is the best looking motion control, and indeed it looks that way in promos, I look at reality and see a potential problem. I hope the Move turns out to be more honestly represented than the Eye was. RE: the link in my last comment.

Panzer Dragoon, yes!!!
My husband and I loved playing Oorta on the Xbox1. The visuals were impressive then -- they'd be amazing in 1080p with better lighting and shaders!

I hope we hear they're bringing MadWorld to PS3. That game would look amazing in 1080p! I can't wait to hear the chainsaw buzz in 24-bit surround sound!
NiGHTS would also be cool to see.

I think the existing EtD:DotF is a gorgeous game, but I can't play it because it gives me severe motion sickness. A motion-controlled one would probably make me drown.
