As promised, last year's best-selling PC franchise is finally coming to consoles, and just in time for the holiday season. EA has announced that The Sims 3 is in development for PS3, Xbox 360, Wii and DS, with all versions planned for fall release. The console versions promise "all-new" features, like "Karma Powers" that determine whether your Sim can "get lucky" or, on the other end of the spectrum, experience an "epic fail." In addition, the PS3 and Xbox 360 editions will include Facebook connectivity, so you can share Trophy and Achievement updates with friends.
The Wii version will feature an exclusive beach town, complete with its own residents, careers and "lifetime wishes"; and the DS version will introduce a new "Story Mode," a first for a handheld Sims game, allowing players to go through a "complete life simulation."
"We're bringing players the best console and handheld game for The Sims franchise to date and are excited to offer a unique experience for all types of gamers on their platform of choice," said executive producer Sam Player in EA's announcement. And there's good reason for the publisher to be excited, too -- considering the franchise has already generated over $2.5 billion in revenue for EA. We can already hear EA's coffers quivering in anticipation.

How would a user mod work with the ram and graphics card the current generation consoles are using? 512 mb doesn't seem fast enough for that kind of thing, unless it could be made on a PC then transferred over to a console. Even then I can still see a problem with loading time.

You have 2 ps3's and you wont even share one with your wife? Greedy, greedy. Regardless, I know how you feel. We have all our consoles hooked up to one tv, and my wife plays Animal Crossing. A lot... Usually when I want to play something. And AC is not a very interesting game to watch somebody else play.
Either way, I hate the sims so I dont think I will have to worry about it showing up in our household.

old school gamer, sounds like he has his PS3 hooked up to his sweet TV in front of his comfy couch, and the rig is on a desk.
So PS3 >>>>>>> gaming rig.
It already did, in my opinion, if the PC was hooked up to the TV, but this makes it objective fact. I'd rather play an 8 bit game on a couch than Crysis in an office chair.

@Gimboa: I up voted you for your last sentence, that is so how I feel and I used to be a PC gamer before the turn of the century.

Agreed. Sims 3 is just more of sims 2 it seems, i was not very pleased with it.
On the consoles, they seem to cut out core stuff and add gimmicky crap like pets or parties.

i liked The Sims 2 more on the First Xbox then the PC cause on the Pc you just play a family and go on from their .. and their was no real direction and things got boring real quick and now as too the Xbox version i figure i tink around with it and as i was playing around with it ( i liked the controls more then the point and click with a mouse. I actually had to meet criteria to go and unlock a brand new area with a bit of a story too it...... if i remember correctly i made it too a old man and old womans home where me and my Girlfriend who was helping build a bread and breakfast and i think this was close to a beach or something ... anyways i liked the fact their was more places in the game for back ground then the one house on a street.
now if they add online play where you can actually INVITE FRIENDS FROM YOUR FRIENDS LIST .... then that will be awesome and i may just look into this game but if not .. then i think i'l do with out or wait till it gets cheaper.

Posting online with a buzz, even a small buzz is discouraged. If that's not the case go back to the school that "taught" you and demand an explanation on why you were passed.
Of course if this is not your native language, then you are doing as well as the majority of people coming out of a US school.- good for you!

I'm just glad we have a few 360s around the house so if my sister-in-law (she lives with me and the Mrs) wants to monopolize a system I can still use another.

Now console gamers can escape their boring, repetitive lives by playing a game about a boring, repetitive life...
How The Sims ever got popular is beyond me.

I used to enjoy the series when I was about 10 years old. I saw it as some sort of 'uber-realistic adult life simulator'. I used to enjoy sending my Sim to work every morning in hopes of getting a promotion, buying furniture for my house and building relationships with other Sims.
Now though, I'd rather re-read War and Peace in all of its four-volume beauty than play another hour of that game, if you can even call it a game.

You can't really call it a game when it doesn't have gameplay.

I'm not a simmer. The ball and chain is though. I've watched her play several different versions of The Sims. Outcast was pretty good, I actually played that on my PSP along while she was playing on her PSP.
It's always the same hangups from my observations - commands that just get missed, slowdown and just general programming issues. Obviously not enopugh to break the game, but we all know Sims code is FAR from optimized....though there is a ton of info being tracked.
Hopefully this version is a smoother experience. The wife will want it, though she may already have it on the iTouch - the question will be for PS3 or Wii? No HDD requirement on the Wii though....

Can someone explain to me why all the comments don't seem very happy about this? Am I really one of the few that enjoyed the Sims on my Xbox and was hoping the 3rd would be on the 360? Dunno about you guys, but this one is definitely on my "Must-Have" list. Can't wait!

Cause gamers don't like entertainment software being portrayed as a game when it's not, though it looks like the console versions do inject at least tiny tiny bit of gameplay even though it's not very good gameplay.

I don't see why they are not bringing it to PSP. As far as I know those games did okay, and now they can even just release it as a PSN title so they spend nothing on manufacturing and optimize loads.
As much as EA likes them some Sims profits, you'd think they could at least port a slightly upgraded version of the DS game just for the added $$$ it would bring in (and don't start with the bullsh*t about PSP not selling or whatever, it has done well for itself and I don't need my inbox full of fanboy spam).
