Square Enix producer Shinji Hashimoto was in the question-answering mood yesterday, responding to a handful of queries thrown his way via the Square Enix Partners Twitter account. After explaining to his curious followers that the company is "undecided" about downloadable ports of Seiken Densetsu 3 and mobile RPG Ever Heart Odyssey, Hashimoto addressed the possibility of DS remakes for Final Fantasy V and VI, stating (according to Andriasang's translation), "for FF5 and 6, there are technical issues as well, so at present these are also undecided."
We're not quite sure what that means. The only technical issue we can see in this situation is that Square Enix could put the original versions of both games on a single DS cart, and we would still pay $40 for it, making us technically insane.

I am sure that's what they're referring to. It would be silly to remake them in some other style.

I'd much rather play the original 2D sprite-based version of either of these games. The 3D remake of FFIII was so frustrating I gave up on it, and after 2 hours of the 3D FFIV remake, I dug out my GBA SP and replayed it in 2D again.
The 3D conversion of the landscape makes looking for hidden items and secret passages very difficult, and the perspective makes many of the mazes much harder than they need to be. Normally, I wouldn't mind, but partially obscured mazes that require a lot of backtracking are far less fun with grindy random encounters thrown in.
Not to mention that the 3D animation data is far, far larger than the 2D sprite data, thus limiting the variety of animations and effects the characters can portray. With 22 playable and who-knows-how-many guest/NPC characters in FFVI, the 'technical issues may actually have to do with cart size.

I doubt it has anything to do with size, as alot of the models are just color and slight variations of each other. Exploring can be assisted with a map system or a PS1 style move the camera around option.
At least they tried not to mess up the remake I managed to last for 30 minutes on the wild arms remake on the PS2.......
If anything I wish they would make DLC out of it,I'd rather play it on a TV than the DS....

Apparently Square Enix doesn't like MONEY.
And don't want anyone to realize just how superior they are to FFXIII.

I thought this was clear when they announced they had no intentions of remaking FF7, and instead decided to dump their creative efforts into FF13? Or let go of Sakaguchi? Or Uematsu?

Now I'm conflicted: kudos to Square for knowing that they're a mere shell of their former selves, or how dare they NOT move forward on something we at least know they won't screw up on (mostly because Matrix Software does the DS remakes)?

I know my opinions have never meant a thing to Square Enix in the past and that's never going to change in the future, but Final Fantasy VI is my favorite game of all time and as close to a perfect RPG as I've ever experienced.
Please Square Enix, just leave it alone. You are incapable of doing such a masterpiece any justice.

There is harm in trying. Once they remake it for DS, they'll never remake it for anything else.
Seeing FF4 remade on DS wasn't bad, it was pretty cool. But seeing those same characters in Dissidia made me look back at FF4 DS and think they screwed up. If you're going to remake it, then at least give it more pixels, not less.
An upgrade can be so many things. It can be a 3D rebuilding of the game, but it should at least be of the same visual quality as Dissidia. Amano's Terra and Kefka really came to life with that much detail. That could be accomplished on any platform on the market except for the DS. It could be on PSP, Wii, iPhone, PS2, any combination thereof. Or they can keep it in 2D and give it an HD upgrade like Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition or Street Fighter II HD. That could go on PS3, 360, PC, even iPad.
It is a great game. If it's going to be remade it deserves a real upgrade. A definitive version that represents the best that those characters have ever been.

I totally agree, FF6 Is no doubt the best final fantasy style rpg game in existence.
I do disagree about one thing however, I do think they should make a 3D remake.
Any excuse to play the same game in a slightly different style again!

5 is terrible..... I bought the Original Playstation Anthology years ago, which came with final fantasy 4 and 5. I loved 4, attractive presentation, interesting story and great battle system, the first to make use of active time battle.
However 5 had none of that, it was very light hearted and immature in its approach. It just didnt grip me and given my love of actually enjoying the games I play I never actually finished it..... maybe it gets good after a while but from what I played of it; it wasn't very good.

You are so wrong in way too many levels.
Final Fantasy Anthology released with FF5 and FF6. Final Fantasy Chronicles was FF4 and Chronotrigger. So I think you don't have any clue what you're talking about, or you're lying.
FF5 had a lot more involved class system that made the game a lot more interesting approach. Every play through could handle differently depending on classes.

FFV came out in 1992.
That would be like me spoiling the Godfather movies (Don Corleone dies, btw)
Seriously dude, if you haven't finished FFV by now, just unplug your internet and walk away.

Good thing that FF5 didn't have voice actors, otherwise not speaking Japanese could be an issue. Assuming you mant reading Japanese, that doesn't help the fact that fan trans roms have been around since 96, and official releases have been in english for a decade now.
Seriously though, no modern system even plays FF5. It came out on PS1 like a decade ago, and GBA about 5 years ago. If you're just now getting to it, it's your own damn fault. Galuf dies and his granddaughter takes his place along with all his abilities. The game is still fun, get over it.
Here's another spoiler - Aerith dies in FF7 at the end of the first disc. Oh noes!

I'd be undecided too if I had the chance to remake FF7 instead. Much more profit.

I honestly don't think we're going to see a FF VII remake anytime soon. Maybe in like 15 years when it's really outdated...

Or they could be undecided because they want to go with a better game, ie FFVI.
I hated VII. I may be the only person on the planet that did, but I hated VII.
Give me I, IV, VI, IX or X instead and I'll be good for a long time.
People think Sephiroth was so badass; Sephiroth ain't got NOTHIN' on Kefka. Kefka was PURE EVIL.

Back in the day, when first playing 3/6, I was in complete awe when I saw Kefka. I was actually nervous and fearing him.

As soon as he did "Fallen One" on my party, I about shat myself. =D
I always loved his laugh and the music they had when he appeared on screen. I really liked Kuja a lot in IX also, and I'd put Golbez from IV as my #2 fave FF villain.
I loved FFX, but man, Sin was a LAME boss.

Oh god. Fallen One. I think that traumatized me for a while. I agree Sin was a lame boss. Plus he ruined Cloverfield for me. All I saw was Sin.

"Kefka was PURE EVIL."
Kefka was mad, not evil. Enough difference between the two to merrit mentioning. Sephiroth was evil. He was aware he was killing the planet and everyone. It was his goal. Kefka was just off-kilter and had no handle on reality enough to be considered evil. He operated outside the rules... He in fact didn't even know a rulebook existed.
And I understand prefering other FFs... But I can't believe someone that likes several games in the FF series (especially FFX) can find no enjoyment from FF7. Other than just garnering shock value, I don't get it. Its fun, interesting, dramatic, and very well produced. Even if you don't like Cloud, there's enough good in this game to find some enjoyment of.
