If you call a game where players fight each other in a GTA4 MP-style mode in instances of less than 20 players at a time a MMO, sure.

Ridiculous that they're charging hourly fees for this. There shouldn't be any fees to play at all, this game has less MMO components than Guild Wars...

Definitely an interesting payment model. Hopefully I have a PC that can handle it by the time it's out...

Huh?

It's $10/month. How is that any different than any other MMO, small price variance aside?

...because you can also purchase hours rather than months? No MMO that I can think of currently runs on a model like that.

I actually quite like this model for MMO pricing more then the standard monthly subscription scheme. If I had a computer that could run this game, I'd probably definitely check it out.

It's the same thing? You can pay $10/mo, or subscribe for longer, and pay less. That's pretty standard for any mmo on the block.

The only difference is that you can pay $3 less, for basically a week's worth of play. Which isn't a good deal anyway. May as well just not eat McDonalds one day of the month, and pay $10 for unlimited play.

"When the 50 hours are up, players have the option to purchase 20 more hours for $7, 30 days of unlimited access for $10, or discounted 90- or 180-day passes. "

Unlike some of the other commenter's, this right here makes me check out. Of course, MMO models have never sucked me in, so I guess this is no different. I just don't like the idea of paying to play a single game like this. I guess if it was the only game I was going to play it wouldn't be a big deal. However, if you want to play other things at the same time then you quickly begin wasting your money.

That doesn't make any sense. If you're buying APB time in hours, you don't lose anything if you don't play it for a month or two...

Thanks, but it does make sense beyond that "20 more hours for $7" increment. Way to be too quick to criticize me. Simply put - I am not one for paying hourly or monthly fees to play a single game. It's great that you like the model - I am disappointed.

Who was too quick here? The reason you gave for disliking the model - feeling like you had to ignore other games to get your money's worth - doesn't make sense if you buy hours rather than months.

Yes, there is that ONE option - but I did not make my comment about that one option alone in the first place. Thus saying my statement didn't make sense because YOU applied it to only that one option is incorrect. I still think you were too quick to criticize.

There are two options total - hourly or monthly. You were completely ignoring one of them until addressing it in your reply. That's all I was trying to say.

I'm with Duke on this one. I've tried WoW and Aion, and both times I find myself in situations where I am just not really getting my money's worth. Other games come out and I want to play those instead, or we hit the end of a semester at school and papers take priority, or work, or something else in life gets in the way. After a few months of both those games I canceled.

The problem with monthly fee games is that there is a pressure to play them. Go a few days without playing them and it starts to feel like a waste. This is the same reason I canceled my gamefly. I ended up holding onto many of my games for 2 months, in which time I could have simply bought the game used. And because I was under the "monthly fee pressure" I found myself no longer going back and playing old games because I wanted to beat my current Gamefly game and get a new one.

I do like the idea of paying for hours that you use and not a calender period of time, but offering 20 hours for $7 when you have 1 month for $10 is pretty weak. Maybe if they had 50 hours for $5 instead I would go for it.

Does anyone know in particular how the game ACTUALLY plays? Is it an open world MMO like World of Warcraft or Lord of the Rings? Is it semi open but in instances like Champions Online or Star Trek Online? Or is it totally instance with 5 vs 5 or whatever like Huxley or that other horrible gang war mmo that came out a few months ago?

You know how GTA's free roam mode works? Ok take that, plus the city system in Guild Wars. So basically there's a large group of people running around in these city instances, I think 80s the max or something? HOWEVER, you do not interact with any of these people, unless they are specifically dispatched against you, so it's kind of like you're in your own little world while everyone else around you is in their own little world.

You see them, can talk to them, but if you're an Enforcer and you're at an area and there's like a hundred Criminals? They can't do anything to you, unless they are dispatched against you, and like I said, the highest dispatches I've seen are 8 people.

Hmmm so you only attack other players when they are dispatched against you? I was kinda hoping for true GTA MMO or like WoW's pvp system... i want hundreds of people fighting against eachother. I might still try it though! Thank you so much for the info Cleric!

@Cleric weird... when I played it at PAX East, I could shoot at anyone around me. Maybe we were all just auto dispatching or maybe I was missing something else.

@Cyrius game play wise, APB is not all that great. There was no cover system (that I saw in my play) and you couldn't shoot through car windows, gaps between railings/geometry, and the city instance felt pretty empty. (very few, very bland NPCs walking around)

APB has great looking characters and isn't a bad concept. Just wish it was a different game. (an actual GTA Online, for example)

It depends on your playing habits. If you're only playing a couple of hours a week, the $7 for 20 hours is a better deal. If you're playing a ton, then yes, the $10/month will be much better.

Yeah, I had Bad Company 2 since launch, and up until a week ago Steam said I only had 33 hours clocked in, now that's pretty shit for a game I paid full price for, but I just get really bored easily, I get to my games later. Would be perfect for me since the hours never run out until I use them, wish more MMOs did this.

"30 days of unlimited access for $10"

Sure sounds like a monthly fee to me! I mean, unless you enjoy /dance in the social district. The beta was awful, the fact that they're doing a fee, AND microtransactions, ontop of the largest battles being 8v8 really goes to show what a disappointment this was. And yes I was in the beta, all of them. also enjoy the top guilds getting the best weapons in the game, so you'll never be able to go over them.

Jesus RTW, what the hell

You should never have to hear a developer or publisher say "to subsidize your ongoing costs".

Ongoing costs. Makes it sound like you're paying interest on a loan or something.

It's a real game (what they had at PAX was evidence enough that it could come out)

it's just not a very good game. Think more Saints Row than GTA. Think Saints Row with a lots less personality and, somehow, less polish...

i been playing the beta they only let you play sundays for like 4 hours. I can see why they don't want to give you 30 days free with purchase, the game will get old really fast, mission are go there get that or another player defending objective. There are no npc to kill on mission only other players and the driving is just horrible. Kinda like GTA multiplayer but a lot worse in every way.

I know the hourly thing is kinda crappy sounding just thought I'd throw this piece of fine print on it out... Essentially if you buy the 20 hour packs the game time only goes down while you are in the Action Districts. In other words only in the regions you can drive around, shoot, do missions, or otherwise cause mayhem and destruction.
The Social District (where you can work on customization ala Forza style) is unlimited access for anyone who buys the game and if you only go into the Social District the 50 hours won't dissappear until you play for 50 hours in the action zones. They also announced that when you manufacture items and auction them you can do so for either RTW points or in-game cash, which in a loopy way, prevents "gold farming".
A lot of us Beta testers think that, at least for the one's that want to get their customization on heavy at the start, the 50 hours should last around a month. Considering that most games going for 60 bucks are getting rated for running less than 10 hours I'd think some people would consider this at least a must-try (especially if you are into PVP type games).

And Im thinking that the person who posted about the driving sucking the Beta Servers are out of Germany so anyone testing from the US would have lag (especially while driving)

A new MMORPG? Alright, I guess... $7 for 20 hours? Cool, for players like me. Seems like this game might actually be my first MMORPG, because of this idea. I really don't need to buy a year for something I'll play during the weekends for like, 40 minutes.

What I notice is nothing from RTW talks about how the game play is in any of their promo material. All everyone only talks about the customization, Take this with the only once a week 3 hour play sessions for beta players (WTF?!?) and if you ask me, they are hiding something. I have 7 friends in the beta, none of them are playing.. Hrmph, makes me wonder. Why would anyone blindly pre-order? Thats why they offer it.. to take your money before you get fooled.. I wont be fooled..
And anyone who says (it's only 50 bucks) Please be my friend, cuz i got tons of things to sell you
