I hope they improve the real-time combat in New Vegas. I couldn't stand using V.A.T.S. on every enemy in Fallout 3.

I would hate using vats on every enemy too, but from my memory most enemies are fought real time, even the vats is real time after the first shot.

I loved the VATS, I just got bored of the animations. Granted, that was after about 120 hours, but I'd still like the option to turn it off. I actually think it would be cool to see the same animations, but in real-time (i.e. no slow-motion) from the perspective of the protagonist.

No clue, why he's being downvoted. V.A.T.S was fun for the first hours, but how often can you watch an enemy's head explode into goo, eyeballs and skull shards in slow-mo before it gets old? Replacing the weird > < shaped crosshair with something more usable (or even a different one for each gun type) would be all they needed to do. Although I'd prefer realistic manual aiming with no crosshair at all for Fallout.

I used VATS 5 times and then stopped.

I played fallout 3 for over 300 hours.

I liked using VATS on multiple targets...

if it was just one opponent I didn't use it.

I don't know how you guys managed to play without VATS. This is why a lot of people never call Fallout 3 a "shooter", because if you try to play it in "real time" the controls are just awful. It's just something with the way your view pans left to right, it's very stiff and inaccurate and I found it nearly impossible to fight anyone without using VATS. I like VATS a lot, I just don't want to use it 100% of the time, which is what I ended up doing with Fallout 3.

I liked VATS. I mean, it is a role-playing game, not a first person shooter. Should I complain about Halo 3 not having a turn based combat system?

If you really want a First person shooter/ RPG hybrid, try Mass Effect, STALKER, or Bioshock--you know, a game where that was the GOAL.

Just thought I'd point out that while this is a game set after Fallout 3 it isn't a sequel in the regular sense - points from the previous game might be referenced but you don't need to have played it and there won't be characters from the previous games.

... I don't see why you wouldn't play the previous Fallout games though.

Also: Hardcore mode is going to be amazing.

I guess if I had played Fallout 3 first and then played the first two games, I'd think they were too old and different and toss them away. Just as I've played a bit of Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion and now the first two games look too different and dated for me.

I played Fallout 1 and 2 a year after they came out, 98 and 99, some of my most favorite games of all time. 3 is a disappointment, but not a bad game. Considering much of the staff of New Vegas was behind 1/2, I'm cautiously optimistic.

Hardcore sounds insane.

Though you'd have to be careful to make many, many saves, just in case you find yourself in a situation where you are starving or dying of thirst and accidentally save at a point where you can't find remedy in time before you die.

@Grey, in case you haven't figured out your error by yourself, a 100 hours are just a little bit more than four days (if you play in one go, without eating, sleeping or showering, that is, a normal Fallout game session)

I read the IGN preview and can say I am officially excited for New Vegas. Seeing as it's Fallout 3 but more refined, the only thing I would change is a new graphical engine.

From the previews there's supposed to be a lot more color in this one, from the strip, to the desert (the conceit is that the desert wasn't targeted and didn't get very irradiated at all, so there's a lot more plant life and wildlife around).

I'm glad that the developers of Van Buren are working on this. Hopefully they won't make Vegas a bunch of interior cells connected by subways like Bethsoft did with number 3. I want to see a fully detailed retro futuristic Vegas!

Man, I loved Fallout 3 but the engine is really showing its age. Can't Bethesda (I know they aren't making it, but engine is their) update it a little bit? Tweak it, customize it, add support for better graphics in there. Even newer games using the same engine as their previous games are using engines that are improved and customized (CoD: MW2, I think? The later STALKER games). For crying out loud..

And the very first screenshot in this article makes it even worse. It looks like one of those cheap games on XBLA.
