I loved the original too. Looks like they really listened to the community when making this sequel. Already I can see BIG differences.

Graphics look a lot better
Roads look smoother (they don't have that jaggedness on turns anymore)
Weather effects look awesome
Day and night cycle looks great too
Off-road tracks are now textured
Your car can get dirty now
It looks like there's more interaction that you can do with your character

This is a day 1 purchase for me

I had the first TDU for the Xbox360. Dumb room-mate scratched the disc. Loved that game.

I remember there was a wide strip of street in some city where you could always find at least 5-10 other players just drag racing. I'd sometimes go with a Ferrari just to see the cars that I couldn't afford in game or irl.

This is defiantly a day 1 purchase for me also.

i'd make the Stunts HD joke but it wouldn't be Stunts if it wasn't blocky and jagged.

TDU is the greatest driving (driving, not racing) game ever made. I was so afraid this game would never come out. To say I can not wait is beyond an understatement.

The song is "Under the Sheets (Jakwob Remix)" by Ellie Goulding if anyone was wondering. I sure have noticed a lot of the trailers for games lately have been freakin awesome!

Thank you so much for naming the song. Gave a couple of her songs a listen on Last.FM, instantly fell in love with her voice and grabbed the album from iTunes.

Apparently it is going to continue to be one of the best values in gaming too. I went to amazon to see if they finally had it up for pre-order. Not only do they, but they have it listed at $50. Not as good as the $40 of the first one, but since I would have happily paid $100 for it, I am a very happy camper. I bought all of the DLC from the first one JUST to support the development of this one. That might seem stupid, but it looks like it was worth it. At one point, it really appeared that TDU2 was going to get canned. Sep 30th (if that is the actual release date) can't get here soon enough. Cough, cough, I feel the flu coming on that week...

"the video above doesn't do it nearly enough justice"

The graphics didn't look bad in the video to think they're going to look better with a persistent online world with players dropping in and out with little to no lag is crazy.

Yup, not too bad. What bothers me is, judging from the screenshots, it looks like their graphics engine still lacks good anti-aliasing. As a bit of graphics whore, attracted to the otherwise beautiful visuals, I can only hope they have a few more tricks up their sleeves to hide The Jaggies this time around.

Two and a half hour day cycle?

So that's what, two hours, twenty nine minutes and someone deletes the sun for a minute before adding it back in?

Or do they use mirrors?

Probably means that it'll be daylight for an hour, then 15min sunset, 1 hour of night time, then 15min sunrise.

Oh God, this makes me so excited. TDU1 was so great, but it felt like it needed more time in the oven. I'm glad they're putting all the effort needed into this.

Two questions: Are bikes in again? Is the handling better than in the first game? I really liked the first TDU, but got turned off by the less-than-perfect car and bike physics. A Dodge Viper isn't supposed to have the turning radius of a goddamn aircraft carrier...

LOL! So, if I have this right, in the time between GT4 and GT5 we get:

3 Forza games
7 Need For Speed games
4 Burnout games
5+ generic, monosyllabic racing games (Blur, Dirt, Fuel, Grid, Pure, etc.)

...and now 2 Test Drive Unlimited games!

I liked the last one on 360. A lot of other games seem to get credit for what this series was doing first.

I wonder if they'll do another under-$60 release and then put out a lot of DLC. I thought that was a nice compromise

I REALLY hope that they'll have another Island Race in this one. The original was pretty long and jaw-dropping when looking at the scenery while cruising in HD.

I liked the video but I think I noticed something weird, the cars handling seems to be still like TDU 1 . I hope it was my imagination and they have polished the handling on the cars.

Also, to add to that, I am very happy this is coming out on PS3. I would have been annoyed if it was 360 exclusive and I had to buy another console to play it.

Hi-res stills look pretty good but looking at the video, car models lack detail and there's a ton of jaggies.
I'm a bit confused as to what this game is trying to be. I'm pretty sure I saw a naked dude in a hot tub at one point . . . in a racing sim.

I remember reading somewhere that the car models on the original TDU were the most accurate of all compared to pretty much every racing game released untll 2008.

But I've read this around 2008, so don't ask me for sources ^-^

Dear Developers....get rid of everything except anything that has to do with racing.

Add Customization to my cars (I don't just mean paint)
Perhaps damage modeling

is it that bad that I dont want them spending time creating models for furniture for my house? I don't give a shit about furniture. I want the time they would devote for that aspect of teh game to focus on you know the acutal racing. and besides, customization lets gamers feel like they got their money's worth.

THIS IS NOT THE SIMS GET RID OF THE HOUSE.

Seriously If you boil every racing game down to just slaping stickers on a car and driving around in circles they might as well all just be the same damn game. In this day and age you have to have more than just a driving mechanic to make a game worth buying for 50 bucks or more.

Go try it in a real car. It's a physics quirk best described by the "right hand rule" - curl your fingers in the direction of torque, and stick your thumb out. You'll get a force in that direction (which would push the tires in the opposite direction). It's more pronounced in FWD cars than RWD cars - perhaps someone car-nerdier than I can tell you why that is.

Of course, in real life, you may wind up with other forces too (the action of the tires on uneven pavement, for example) that would impart lateral force to the axle. Once you start slipping the tires (as you would stomping the gas), those lateral forces can start moving the axle (thus rotating the car).

That said, I'd say the effect is overly dramatized in racing games.

Semi-edit: duh, RHR is for objects already spinning and changing angle, not stopped tires. It's been too long since I took physics. Still, the rest of the post is correct - once the tires start slipping relative to the ground, any lateral force can push them around while having less effect on the non-slipping tires.

I was a tester on TDU, for the 360. I knew it was a fantastic game at the time, and it was a pleasure working with it. Too bad it was foreshadowed by the gloomy prospects of the parent company Atari. I'm glad they decided to keep this IP. I'm also glad the game has been recognised by so many gamers, judging by the comments.

"It's more pronounced in FWD cars than RWD cars"

Yes, in a car where the engine and transmission are both in front, the differential is not directly in the middle of the car so one drive shaft is shorter than the other which has a tendency to spin one wheel faster when you mash the gas off the line.
