Additionally, as you might have already suspected, various elements in the trailer heavily suggest Vietnam and Cold War themes -- an intercontinental ballistic missile launch, possible Vietcong troops, scientists vacating an exploding Russian complex, and the presence of a UH-1A Huey helicopter (first used in 1962 during the Vietnam War). Oh, and hey, that dude you see above? Yeah, he's probably pretty important to the story. He also totally gets to fly a helicopter, which seems to be player-controlled. See for yourself after the break.
Call of Duty: Black Ops reveal trailer gets the GT Pop-Block treatment

Outside of a UK game retailer listing a handful of details about this November's Treyarch-developed Call of Duty: Black Ops, all we've been given so far in terms of solid information on the game is a trailer with a slurry of quick cuts and some muffled dialog. Thankfully, GT Pop-Block has taken apart said trailer piece by piece, highlighting several standout points. What we found most interesting was that, rather than an astronaut seen briefly near the end, it's actually an SR-71 pilot in a full pressure suit, just before heading into sub-orbit (Pop-Block believes this could be a recon mission).

This is stupid that they well have every COD game in every year. I don't see the point of buying this one.

The trailer may look better but its the same as any movie trailer if you have a good person behind the scenes cutting up the game and playing good music then it can make any game look good.
Depending on the game play I'm going to make sure I'm not going to make the same mistake I did with COD WW game and buy it because its a COD game. There are plenty games that are going to come out around that time.

@Nap, I am far from the frat boy type... totally not into the whole guns n' 'splosions thing, but I was shocked to enjoy both Modern Warfare games. They're short but full of set pieces. It's nice to flex a different hemisphere of my brain every so often.

I kinda agree with you; I don't feel like parting with my $ every year. I thought the teaser was underwhelming (old-school, like a movie trailer from 2000), but I would like to see actual gameplay before making a final decision, and it also depends on what else I'll be playing at the time. So far it looks like I'll already be too busy given the slew of great games coming out later this year (Halo Reach, Fallout New Vegas, Ghost Recon Future Soldier, Fable 3, etc.).

Being a solder helps him take all that extra voltage they plan on giving him.

Was that an intentional pun? SOLDER being the LEAD?
I thought it was funny...

So just now they're taking the Call of Duty series proper (not MW) into wars other than WW2?
(It seriously took 4 years, and we're talking about an Activision property?)

Doesn't look bad, though I'm not sure how much more Call of Duty I can take.

"Doesn't look bad", I don't remember seeing anything worth calling a game. All I saw were random clips flashing and the same tired graphics engine they've been using since 2007.

Idk and I don't think that guy in the screenshot is the Main Character, because first he looks like those cuban guerillas that were going at it during Nam, and second he looks like a young fidel castro haha so he's probably the bad guy :P

He's not the main character or the player controlled character because if you wacth the helicopter scene again you can clearly see he is sitting in front of you wearing a headset

@ Sly: The soldier could be using them non-officially before they were officially sold. Like the XM8, SCAR, etc, which the Special Forces were using them before they were officially set to use or canceled.

The M21 sniper rifle was initially used in the Vietnam war.
The M14 Enhanced Battle Rifle is a new modification of the M14, which is heavily based off of the M1 Garand.
In other words, M21 is a sniper rifle from Vietnam, and M14 Enhanced Battle Rifle is a new sniper/marksman rifle that is current.

since they're done by two different developers i dont see the problem with them coming out so frequently. ill rate this one without mw2 in mind.

And we still don't care. CoD4 was a rare blip on the radar for an otherwise average franchise...as evidenced by the disaster that is MW2.

...Did you play CoD 1 or 2? Both were excellent games. While certainly not the Jaw-Dropping Spectacle (tm) of CoD4, at the times of their release they stood out in a crowded genre.

Why stop their Activision?! You bastards could aways make; cod: desert storm, cod: civil war, cod: american revolution. . . the potential is endless! You can have have the 'cannon kill streak', 'bayonet' add on, and for desertstorm you can have the 'set up your own tent' and 'paper work completed' achievements!!!!

"You joke, but I'd totally buy a Call of Duty: American Civil War"
As would I but the Kill Streaks are going to be a pain in the ass to obtain. I'll probably just get a hawk to survey the battle field all the time. I'll never get 6 kills in a row to call in the Calvary. :(

pretty funny. but i don't think the cod name will be stopping any time soon. This game will be GOOD, and again will split the community because people will be playing MOH and people will be playing COD. hopefully, treyarch delivers -

I hope this game feels more cooperative, since MW2 feels like a UR3 but with some odd modern nonsense. Anyway nice to see the intense gore is still in here.

I'm fine with a Call of Duty game a year. I've been playing MW2 pretty much since release, and prior to that playing WaW all year, and prior to that MW all year. Each game is different (unlike Madden-- which is essentially the same game year after year), but fundamentally using the same engine, which I think offers solid gameplay. The one thing I do like about Treyarch releases is that they seem to offer more maps, much sooner after release, new gameplay, and more frequent double XP weekends. But I'm more into the multiplayer game than the single player game.
The othing thing is-- what exactly is coming out around the Christmas holiday anyway? I know Natal is coming, but know nothing of the releases. GOW3 was pushed into next year, which would have made a perfect holiday release. So I'm fine with a CoD game appearing. And I'm looking forward to Black Ops.
