MechWarrior 4 is now free ... if you can get it [update]

Original post: So here's the thing -- we were all set to tell you about how MechWarrior 4 had been released for free, but apparently some people found out before we could tell you and now, well, the servers are down. Bigtime. As in, it might be a few minutes before they're back up. According to several tipsters, the 1.7GB file became available for download last night, but as of right now, MekTek (the game's host) is still suffering an outage.

That said ... hey! MechWarrior 4 has been released to the general public for precisely zero of your hard-earned C-Bills! If you managed to snag the file last night, we're hearing reports that MekTek has recovered the game's multiplayer servers. We'll let you know when the servers are back up.

I loved MechWarrior 2, but it's the only game in the series I've played.

Pretty well, I'd say. Mechwarrior 2 was pretty landmark and so this probably wasn't as big a deal "in its time" as that was, but the Mech customization process is quite good and the FMV storyline is an awesome cheesefest.

Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries is the better game, though.

Yeah, it still a great game. I remember this and Tombraider were the games that made me go buy a 3D video card. First a Rage 3D and then a Matrox Mystique

I think there was a mercenaries addon for 2 also. II loved playing 4 and It should be even better than that.

Gotta say, though, MW2:Mercs had a rad opening which just pumped me up for blowing up some mechs.

It's great. I have the original box and disk sitting right next to me on the shelf actually. I played this game for sooo many hours. Single player was a ton of fun, but online was so hectic and just simply amazing when I got it. Definitely try to download it.

The game is being distributed via bittorrent using a custom client btw. It's nice to see the protocol being used for something legitimate for a change. :)

Well, if it isn't the torrent link, then the upload site you used is the problem. Either way, my viruscanner went beserk within a few minutes after visiting there.

I just downloaded this and played it, no issues. I can confirm that there are no viruses here. Shame you all downvoted it...

I also wanted to let everyone who's still looking to download the game that James' link is legit. I just finished downloading it and the game works perfectly.

Megaupload is the butt of file-sharing sites. That's probably why your virus detector went off...

Thanks for the support, Zax. I guess I wasn't clear enough. The problem wasn't the torrent link. Visiting MegaUpload was what gave me the malware.

This is what the PC community needs old games that go free to play, with some awesome top quality remakes of them on the way!

Just so you know, Aerothorn, this is Mech 4: Mercs that is available freely. Even has the "Unseen" mechs available. Now, if things stay working, maybe I can actually get the game going tonight.....

this is going to be great in a couple of weeks when there are hundreds of thousands of people playing mechwarrior4.

for now, the initial rush is bogging down the site and servers, but once everyone has the client the fragging will be good.

@Silverrain Your virus scanner must be lying to you. I've used megaupload plenty of times, nothing wrong with it.

I'm sorry, but it's not. Maybe it was an advertiser. I also got a pop-up window while I was there. But I do know I have malware to clean off, that wasn't there before going to MegaUpload.

what virus scanner are you using?

I was using Immunet Protect. I just switched to Microsoft Security Essentials, while I make sure this Torrent trojan and associated nastiness are cleaned off.

Just to let you know some virus scanners are like ultra nazis. Like a lot pick up my programs, that I make my self, as viruses. When they're nothing but simple AD&D 2 character creator programs and XP programs to make playing the game easier for me and my friends. Hell, mine picks up Steam, GameSpy, UpLink, Darwinia, and Postal as all viruses. Obviously they're not viruses. Also another weird on is my brother's virus scanner says that all Pop-Cap games are viruses.

This wasn't an issue with the virus scanner. I got honest-to-goodness malware from something related to the MegaUpload site. It's quite possible it was something from one of their advertisers.

I had gotten Tribes 2 when it went free and it kept telling me I needed a CD key.

Sorry about the downtime, everyone! We never expected to get 100,000+ unique downloaders at once. It completely destroyed the server and the router it was sitting behind. Now a ton of stuff is being done to try and make sure this doesn't happen again.
