I think spoke too soon on this. I thought about it a little more and I really think it depends on the type of game you're playing, too. For example, regenerative health in Left 4 Dead wouldn't work. You feel a real sense of relief and success when you find a health kit. Things can get crazy when the horde is coming right at you and you're mid-healing. That is an extremely effective example of a health system that works. If you look at Splinter Cell Conviction, your health regenerates and it fits that game perfectly. You get spotted and you get shot and you run to hide in cover in the shadows to heal up. I don't want to climb a pipe on the ceiling and grab a med-kit or something. Ya dig? The 'danger system' you mentioned seems similar to what they were trying to accomplish with regenerative health. You get to cover and avoid taking hits and you can heal. Wow, we should probably continue this over dinner.

"I found having the health bar displayed on the screen and picking up health kits to be kind of archaic."

Personally, I think it's better to have the health bar. In some modern shooters I have problems discerning how close to death I am. I think this happened in Resistance 2, Resistance 1 had that awesome health bar/regen system, and then R2 got rid of the health bar to, I dunno, be edgy or something.

@Acosta02

Yeah, getting rid of R1's health system was one of many things R2 did wrong. As I said above, I think R1 had one of the best health system's I've seen in any game. So simple, yet so effective. Why they ditched that in R2 is a complete mystery to me.

Vid, I agree! Resistance 1's system was a great mix. Unfortunately, I didn't really dig the game that much. It was OK, but not great IMO.

I also agree on L4D2. That element of relief is something that I miss from a lot of games actually. If you really want that element of relief, try Demon's Souls... Unrelated, but related. I guess.

I'm a really bad amateur 2D game designer, and I've always had this idea to recreate an older game, like Mega Man for example, and add in modern stuff like regenerative health. Maybe go crazy, add way more checkpoints, a targeting system, turn the first quarter of the game into a tutorial... Could be funny.

So much of this sounds so much like Fallout. I wish I hadn't gotten burned out on that game so I could actually be excited about this.

I'm always amazed at how post-apocalyptic women manage to find time to lotion their skin, shave, and bathe...regularly.

It actually makes a lot of sense for weaker women to attempt to survive with sex appeal, and uglier women to die out because men are less likely to help them.

and anyway, hot chicks improve the experience.

The gorgeous visuals still prove Carmack & Co. are gods when it comes to building game engines. Keep on going Carmack!

I read somewhere that the uncompressed version of this game is one terabyte in size. Biggest game ever or biggest game ever?

Also, poor EA got screwed out of an awesome new IP.

If there's anything I've learned in my years of playing games and following industry news, it's that John Carmack can write a graphics engine like nobody else.

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeees been looking forward to this for awhile now.

I'm stuck choosing between the PC and 360 version ... before you reply hear me out...

If the PC version has better graphic options (like Metro 2033 has DX11 options, Tessellation, etc. on the PC vs 360 DX9) then I'll definitely opt for the PC.

The thing that nobody knows is whether PC users will get more options for fine tuning their game because most of the time, a console port to the PC has a bit better lighting, detail with a higher resolution but thats about it.

Metro 2033 truly is the first game to show an incredibly vast difference between the console vs what the PC version can do (it can look like the 360 version, but at the same time also 3x better).

I'm a PC gamer at heart, but I never thought GTA4's graphics looked too bad on the consoles. That is, until I played the game on my PC. I fired it up again for 360 the other day just for old time's sake, and I could barely play it. It looks like a mess.

@Ezio Auditore da Firenze
If it has (stable) 60fps it is great progress since those early alpha builds that had preformance issues on PS3 not even year ago.
http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/30/edge-rage-running-at-60fps-on-360-just-20-to-30fps-on-ps3/

As to why it was shown on X360 it probably was easiest platform to get running newest build.

I got up to the part where it says 'Firefly tang' and stopped. That's enough for me to buy any game. Now if only we could get Nathan Fillion voice acting in there, I'd be totally down.

When this comes out I will most likely get it. I am on the fence between keeping my 360, getting a PS3, and getting a gaming PC. Probably keep the 360 because it's obviously much cheaper and my favorite gaming friends as of now also have one each. What are you getting it on? /Or are you sick of wastelands and Post Apocalyptic settings being the foundations for so many games? Opinions appreciated :)
