Netflix is great. The only thing I dislike is their anime selection. Since then I have moved to RentAnime. Downside, no streaming =\

Free streaming for anime can be had practically anywhere, even of dubs if that's your preference. Certainly there's a quality hit, but that's the tradeoff.

I prefer subtitled. I can hardly stand dubbed anime. Very few are worthwhile. I can use TVersity to stream anime, with that quality hit. Just a pain because some people use unsupported codecs and they won't work.

have you tried download the k-lite mega codec pack? i found that it helps when streaming anime from various site's.

No no no. Don't get me wrong they have a good variety. I have just seen so much anime that I've come close to running out of what Netflix has available. RentAnime has a much larger selection. That is the only reason I moved.

About the codec. I have everything set up perfectly. It's just even through Tversity, both that and Xbox do not support the codec. For example some are ripped H.264. Unsupported. Some MKV files I cannot tell because they are a container. It's pretty well one group of releasers that use unsupported codecs.

dammit! what happened to my comment? it's like it doesn't want to post. ahhh well whatever. as i was going to say before you can use firefox's download converter. when you downlaod a video with it, it can convert the video to any format you tell it to. i use it all the time to watch my episodes of Fairytale (awesome anime by the way) on my XBOX 360 via it's USB ports. i can't speak for TVersity but i do know that the download converter works for the XBOX 360 and the subs aren't removed when the video is converted. if you don't know what format the 360 supports, i think it's XVID, AVI and WMV.

That converter would work in my favor for TVersity. Thank you very much for the idea. I am going to give this a shot tonight and see if this fixes my problem with the select few animes I have it with. You just might be a life saver. Thanks!

You know, there's one thing I just can't figure out. Almost EVERY anime fan I've seen who prefers subtitles seems to be incapable of admitting that that's just their preference; they always, ALWAYS feel the need to come off as elitist pricks. It's never "I prefer watching anime subtitled"; it's always "Dubs suck and they should stop making them!! Sugoi!" Well guess what, there are some anime fans who like watching dubs because they believe that film - especially animation - is meant to be watched, not read, and having your eyes glued to the bottom of the screen for the duration of the experience and having no clue what the characters are actually saying is not the way the creators intended their show/film to be watched. And if you honestly think that all or even MOST dubs are not good, you either A) are a Certified Weeaboo; B) have watched almost no major series dubbed in the last 10 years; and/or C) only watch silly shounen/moe series that are ludicrously (oftentimes intentionally) overacted even in Japanese.
Sorry for the rant, but seriously, the next time I see another cookie-cutter otaku whine about how "all dubs suck", I'm going to bust a nut.

Consider me an elitist prick if you want but it's just simply the truth. When hiring voice actors for anime they hire people who fit the personality and voice of that character. Dubs generally pick up decent voice actors. I would much prefer to watch it how it was ORIGINALLY intended. So quit your whining. Just because some of us would rather have subtitles than dubs does not mean anything to you. If you enjoy dubs, I respect that. I don't. So grow up.

All dubs suck! You go ahead and bust that nut.

Honestly the voice actors for the dubbed versions don't always get how like Spike mentioned is originally intended. Most of the voice are childish and sound ridiculous. Trust me I have watched every major anime release within the past 10 years and yes they are horrible when compared to original subbed anime. Half the time they change wording anyways to construe meanings for the children they put some of the more mature anime front of. Plus after you watch enough subbed anime you'll notice you need to less and less read the bottom of the screen.

Once again dubs suck. Either way it's just an opinion of mine and yours.

Nut Busted.

I'm fine with dubs, and in some cases they end up superior (i prefer Eureka 7's english off the top of my head), but in a lot of cases, they are not. Of course, my favorite series is One Piece, which had an infamously horrible dub, initially, though the Funimation re-dub was fine enough.

@Spike, apparently you didn't read my post closely enough. What I said is that I have no problem with people who prefer subs, but am mystified by the fact that it seems nearly everyone with that preference feels the compulsion to bash dubs at every possible opportunity. You yourself started out saying you personally prefer subbed anime (I completely respect that, and in fact watch subs for some series myself), but that soon degraded into saying that anime is "meant" to be watched subbed, which I think you'll forgive me for seeing as being somewhat elitist. The truth is, whether you're watching it dubbed into your own language or getting someone's translation via subtitles that you have to read instead of looking at the imagery, you're not experiencing it as it was "intended". The notion that watching anime (or any other type of film, but especially animation) subbed is inherently a more "pure" experience is laughable. Do you really understand just how different the Japanese language is from English? Accurate translation between the two can range from difficult to virtually impossible. Even your precious fansubs are just some guys' attempts at translating the source material, and it's entirely possible they may misinterpret the meaning that the Japanese writers were trying to convey. To paraphrase Mamoru Oshii (one of the greatest anime directors of all time), "a true translation is an illusion" (and he said this specifically in the context of discussing why he supports the dubbing of his films). Most respectable localization/distribution companies (and the respectable ones are pretty much the only ones left, since everyone else is getting the hell out of an industry that's dying a slow and brutal death from piracy) work with the original creators to try and create an English translation that's as close as possible to their original intent while still flowing naturally enough to be viewed by an English-speaking person. Also, I could be wrong, but the Japanese voice acting in most mainstream (a.k.a. targeted at teenagers, "popular") series tends to be pretty "childish" and over-the-top, and intentionally so - the Japanese approach to acting is much more exaggerated and theatrical than the more naturalistic American approach. This can sound jarring when translated into English, but it's how the show is written. Try experimenting with fandubbing sometime, and you'll see just how hard it is to speak much of the dialogue in anime in any remotely convincing way. And how would you know whether the Japanese actors are over- or underacting their parts? YOU DON'T SPEAK THE LANGUAGE. The mystique of hearing a foreign language makes just about everything sound cool - it's the same trick Mel Gibson used for his movies. Now, the one thing I will concede here is that my favorite series (and the ones I go out of my way to watch) are almost entirely seinen series, (Evangelion, Ghost in the Shell, Gunslinger Girl) which usually get the highest-quality dubs, so my perception of ALL the shows that are released dubbed may be somewhat limited in that regard. Still, I take offense to the implication that watching an animated program dubbed is somehow "unnatural" or "wrong".
And @Phenomenology, that nut is indeed busted, but the spectacle of seeing another pathetic weeaboo reveal himself almost makes it worthwhile.

Approximate recap of this lovably inconsequential string of posts: You start in bitterly complaining about how Netflix doesn't have enough anime, how much you dislike dubs, etc. Somehow or another, this quickly starts falling down the slippery slope of a self-righteous circle-jerk of "I'm watching anime the RIGHT way" that has stunk up anime forums for years. I make a comment - an admittedly seething comment, but a reasonable comment nonetheless - about the flaws in your complaints about the alleged suckiness of dubs. You make a rather indirect response, shocked that your incessant groaning as of earlier might piss someone off, and are followed in short order by your weeaboo (yes, the term is indeed applicable here) friend, and I post a long response to both of you. You promptly manage to completely ignore each and every legitimate point I took the time to make and instead zero in on only the most seething parts of my post and whine about them. Now, I won't pretend I haven't played my part in keeping this argument going, but you have, without failure, responded (albeit not in kind) to every comment I've made, including a rejection of my attempt at civility, and egging you on certainly does make for some mild knee-jerk amusement. Of course, pointing this out will most likely assure that you will not respond to this comment (and pointing THIS out makes it equally likely that you will, so - surprise me), so let's just skip to the moral of the story: if you complain all the time, don't be surprised when people get fed up and complain right back at you, and when they do, you'd better be able to carry on an actual debate if you don't want to end up looking a bit silly. Remember, it's not your personal preference I take issue with, it's the way in which you express it to the world (in this case, complaining). You're welcome.
