Did they mean to make him look like a douche bag?

I was pretty bummed when I found out you couldn't custom-create your own character. Also, since there's no chance you can play as a female, my gf's interest in the game has dropped to like 20%.

I really thought that link was to something resembling the first Metal Gear.

Sorry, but this game looks awful.
I clicked on the video player randomly last night and this came on...I thought it was either a PSP game or a PS2 game until the end when I saw the title and what systems it's on.

I think the main thing he was expecting was to not have them directly copy over ps2 models and textures.

not sure if I should be hyped for this or not. The action looks all to typical of any third person shooter this gen. As far as the RPG aspects go, they'll probably just come down to increased damage with one weapon over another.
The problem here is that I think they're being too ambitious. I can see that they want to support being able to complete a stage using a multiple playstyles, and the decision-making aspects supports this. But when you try to create an experience that can be played out in a variety of different ways, you can't focus on any particular points, such as a responsive/engaging cover mechanic, or playing with lighting to promote stealth.
That said, this could be like Mass Effect 2, where the action is nothing special, but the environment and characters more than make up for it. Of course, Mass Effect took place in outer space.
Also, I was sure I could customize Thornton's face, ala Mass Effect. Kinda sucks.

I'm not an expert in video game character design, but could they have made this guy any more generic?

The animations in this game are terrible. I mean fallout 3 animations were terrible but at least first person was the main way to play the game. The rpg part of the game better be top notch. I really hope this game turns out good because I hate to see any game fail, but my expectations are low.

The more of this game I see, the less I want it. Putting aside the graphics, or how generic and brain-dead the main character looks, the dialogue sounds like it was written by a 12 year old trying to sound cool.
