Me and my friends didn't renew the Gold subscription because we almost never play online. And we're bombarded by ads in the Dashboard.
As Silver, you can't access Halo Waypoint, can't access Facebook nor Twitter (not that I would, but still), can only play game demoes and download game videos a week later, can't send a simple text message to friends.
Glad I have a PS3 in addition.

Bombarded by ads...really. There are usually 1 maybe 2 ads tops and most of the time they are for promotional items you can download from the market place or a sponsor for a contest on live. The are never really in your face. You can easily just scroll past them.
I pay for Cable and Tivo both of which have ads and are a hell of a lot more expensive than $27-$50 per year

Do you also pay for each show/movie you watch with that cable and TiVo of yours'? Didn't think so. Do all games you play come free with that Live subscription of yours? Didn't think so!

I approach it from a "You get what you pay for" approach. I can buy a grizzly steak for $5 or I can buy a premium one for $15. Sometimes you want to enjoy the superior meal, even with the price tag.
Free is awesome but there's always a catch
I always buy my subscription on sale. If you shop around you can find it for $30 for a year which means about $2.50 a month give or take tax. It's not exactly extortion.
Anyway I love that the PSN is free, if for no other reason than it compells MS to keep a superior edge

@laughton you do know that when you're paying for cable you do pay for the channels individually and they cost cents so it does add up to be a month's cable bill... so he actually is paying for the shows and movies he's watching....

Well I'm a gold member. Been one since the 1st day the original xbox started Live. I rarely ever pay full price for live. I bought 4 years of Live when joystiq posted that article a while back about buy.com selling the 12 month cards on ebay for $27.
I dont consider that over paying at all. For what I've gotten out of Live and to see how much better the service has gotten, that's a steal

Exactly. You already have your internet connection, why should you pay for using it? It's like buying electricity, and, although you're technically paying for it, you have to deposit an extra quarter everytime you turn on a light bulb.

Not sure if codes are involved. You are required to put in ODST and sign up through the menu. Best of luck though if there's a way around it.

It's a good possibility. I was thinking of doing the same, but not sure what the registration requires. Don't see how they could lock registration to specific discs.

You can rent it. You just have to have the disc in to play it, thats the only requirement.

This seems kind of odd to me. I mean i am a silver member and I figured I was that gaga for teh Haloz, wouldn't I be a gold member already with a beta entry?
By the way, Yes I have an Xbox, No I don't like shooters, Yes I bought it for other games, No I don't have any games i want go online with, Yes I play RPGs and Sports games, no there hasn't been a co-op RPG that I am willing to pay for online (damn you Too Human, Fable 2 and the cancel Marvel/Champions Online games), yes I have two 12 month XBox Live Gold cards when the day i want go online with my Xbox. (I have been stock piling them with they go sale for $30 or below.) and yes, I have a PS3 but I don't play it online as much either.

Wait so you play sports games on Xbox but don't play online? the best part of sports games is the ability to play against others for a challenge you cant get from AI.
